Posted May 28, 20232 yr I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot lately after the recent ESC. Questions: • Should they participate? Why? • If so, which recent song would you pick (it doesn’t have to be a single)? • Would it help them getting some European success again? • If they participate, how far do you think they’ll get? And yes, I’m aware they don’t want to participate themselves (for now).
May 28, 20232 yr Author • Maybe. Yes if they can commit 100% and want to put themselves back on the map in Europe. • Something uplifting like ‘Neon blue’ (a joyful anthem that gives a message of hope). • In some countries were they have been successful before (like Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands). • In my fantasy a top 10 placing.
May 28, 20232 yr I'd have no issue with them doing it as with eurovision right now they would at least get a single back in the charts. The fans won't go anywhere regardless of the result.
May 28, 20232 yr Author I think so to. It could give them a chance to have some success outside the UK. And..I wonder why they don’t to participate?
May 28, 20232 yr It would help remind fans of other countries that they are still around, i suppose you can understand why they dont participate apart from they might bethinking they dont need to there was a few years when doing Eurovision didn't do much for a career but now its showing the opposite they might change their mind if they were given the chance. If they did it would you like to see them enter with a slow song or an upbeat one?
May 28, 20232 yr I still think the cons outweight the pros for Steps. I feel like they're comfortable and happy with their success levels in the UK, and even if Eurovision gave them a boost for one song and some European chart positions... I think if they came low in the results, particular members of Steps would find it too embarrassing and like it was a stain on their legacy. Even if it's not the end of the world, I think they just don't want to run the risk of the possiblity of adding "Eurovision flops" to their story... not worth it for a temporary bout of exposure.
May 28, 20232 yr Author True…too much ‘risks’.. Still..I would love for them to participate and surprise the people outside the UK. With the wright (upbeat) track I think they could do well (top 10 and some European chart succes)! I guess I have to accept that they are indeed happy with their legacy and have their focus on the UK! Edited May 28, 20232 yr by Lee_his_cheeks
May 28, 20232 yr Also I can't help but feel like they'd get quite a lot of flack from the Eurovision community... I think if they entered, there'd be a portion of that community who'd complain and say that them entering is an indiciation that the UK isn't taking Eurovision seriously. Even though they are one of the most successful pop groups in our music industry, there will be a large amount of people that will never respect them and take note of their achievements! So I think that's another thing I would rather them avoid, them getting an intense spotlight that could involve a lot of criticism and not much love. Maybe that's me being very cynical, I just have this feeling that the overall experience would have potential to not be overly positive!
May 28, 20232 yr I know the spotlight of it would bring attention and not all of it may be good. I think if they did it I couldn't see them do any better than top 10 which would great but steps style if music isn't what usually does at Eurovision so in hindsight the short term boost for 1 single probably isn't enough to risk. If they did it though I'd be supportive.
May 28, 20232 yr Author Oh, what makes you think a big part of the ESC community is against them @Jay?
May 28, 20232 yr • Should they participate? Why? No - it is too much of a risk for them. If they didnt finish at least top 10 surely that'd be considered a failure. • If so, which recent song would you pick (it doesn’t have to be a single)? Something In Your Eyes • Would it help them getting some European success again? Possibly, only if they performed it well/did well in the competition • If they participate, how far do you think they’ll get? I have always been a massive Steps fan but I feel like they wouldnt get any higher than 15th. It would need a song where Claire's vocals can really shine through
May 28, 20232 yr • If so, which recent song would you pick (it doesn’t have to be a single)? Something In Your Eyes Participating songs in Eurovision must be brand new, so you can't pick a cover. ;)

May 28, 20232 yr I think if they came up with something like Neon Blue or What The Future Holds which sounds current, they could do quite well. They’d need a solid performance and more choreography than we’ve seen with recent releases
May 28, 20232 yr Both of those are excellent songs and i think would go down well on the night in an arena, probably get totally screwed over by the judges and might do ok on public vote.
May 30, 20232 yr Both of those are excellent songs and i think would go down well on the night in an arena, probably get totally screwed over by the judges and might do ok on public vote. Juries tend to really appreciate excellent vocalists and Claire is certainly that, so if their song was largely focused on her I think they’d do reasonably well from juries. I actually think it would be the public vote where they’d struggle more.
May 30, 20232 yr I still don’t see the need, but if Eurovision continues to have the same positivity as the last couple of years then I don’t think it would be such a kiss of death for them anymore, and could result in them achieving their highest peaking single since SOTD. I’m kind of ok with it now if they did decide to do it, especially if promoting an album alongside it.
May 31, 20232 yr Eurovision right now does provide some good opportunites,we are seeing more and more success now more than ever, i think if they did it the album would need to be out fairly close to the run up to eurovision so they could take advantage of the exposure.
May 31, 20232 yr Author That’s for me a reason to do it (more UK succes/reaching some European charts)! Still, I don’t think they want it themselves (for reasons mentioned before) so I have to accept they’ll stay focused on the UK only.
