June 2, 20233 yr If Madonna isn’t added it’s surely reinforces the age old issue with BBC RADIO 1 - they seem to have a real problem with female singers over 50…. And ageism is the exact same as homophobia, racism etc… Ageism really is not the same as racism. Maybe you've never suffered racism :/
June 2, 20233 yr Ageism really is not the same as racism. Maybe you've never suffered racism :/ How old are you? And are you a woman over 50??? If not, how could you possibly make such an ill -informed statement. Prejudice is prejudice. End of. Edited June 2, 20233 yr by Dante77
June 2, 20233 yr How old are you? And are you a woman over 50??? If not, how could you possibly make such an ill -informed statement. Prejudice is prejudice. End of. Ill-informed is exactly what I'd describe your statement! Calling ageism and racism the same thing? That is such an offensive thing to say to people who suffer racism. You can't just generalize an extremely sensitive topic like that. Do better.
June 2, 20233 yr You may not think so, but I do! And just because ‘we’ve discussed this issue to death’, doesn’t mean it hadn’t gone away. Prejudice in any form is hateful and wrong. And, the argument that the listener’s are young and would only want to hear young artists is beyond preposterous, narrow-minded and wrong. Great music is great music. And… if a song by an artist sounds like other songs playlisted, then to not playlist it, is ageism = hate. But it’s not prejudice - any new Madonna single would be A Listed on R2 which plays everything R1 caters to 15-35 year olds. Simple!
June 2, 20233 yr I doubt they have that much against Madonna considering Shania is on the playlist and the likes of Paul McCartney was a few years back with Kanye and Rihanna! That was 8(!) years ago now
June 2, 20233 yr Yeh but it’s a example of an older artist who got support with a current artist. If you have to dig back 8 years it’s not a very good example  And again he was just the featured artist. Even if it was Paul McCartney feat. Rihanna I doubt it would be playlisted
June 2, 20233 yr I mean, we're talking about Madonna on The Weeknd's song, where she's not the primary artist...! (I know there's a wider issue with Radio 1 ignoring women over the age of 40 but in this example, a feature credit is exactly what we're comparing)
June 2, 20233 yr If you have to dig back 8 years it’s not a very good example  And again he was just the featured artist. Even if it was Paul McCartney feat. Rihanna I doubt it would be playlisted Ok then let’s use a current example Anne Marie Ft Shania 🙄
June 2, 20233 yr I do really miss the days when you'd have an array of artists from all different age groups on the playlist, and I guess also a wider pool of additions. I don't like with how selective and prejudicial they are either, but it is what it is. I'm more at peace with it these days now that Radio 1 playlisting doesn't necessarily make or break a song (or have any real power in that sense) Mind you, it's not as if Hot Hits are really any better in that department either :/
June 5, 20233 yr Tune of the Week Arielle Free: Dimension - DJ Turn It Up Greg James: Thundercat & Tame Impala - No More Lies Rickie, Melvin and Charlie: Burna Boy - Sittin' On Top Of The World Dean and Vicky: The Snuts - Gloria Vick and Jordan: Sad Night Dynamite - Sick Of Your Sound
June 6, 20233 yr Only on Buzzjack could someone compare ageism to racism/homophobia. Yes, women over 50 definetly have the same struggles as someone who's openly gay or a POC 😍 Read a book.
