^^ They’ve probably pulled in about £80k in a week for this album for old rope with no promo costs etc., - more I’m sure than the majority of albums above them so I’m sure it’s a worthwhile exercise for them.

Comparisons to Sugababes - One Touch (their 20th anniversary debut album reissue):

Sugababes reached #18 with 3,518 sales. That’s 593 more copies than Girls Aloud (2,925 at #42).

Sugababes put way more effort into the track listing, providing fans with a few unreleased demos, rare remixes and new remixes. There was more for Sugababes fans to sink their teeth into, than Girls Aloud’s CD, which had just one new version (Sound of the Underground - Alternative Vocal Mix).

Sugababes had 4 cassettes as part of their formats, Girls Aloud didn't have cassettes.

One Touch download was £9.99, way more reasonable than Girls Aloud’s £15.99.

Overload signed and numbered CD single is arguably a more appealing preorder incentive than Girls Aloud’s unsigned 12” print.

Sugababes were active during the promotion of their reissue - it was low-key, but not as low-key as Girls Aloud have (perhaps understandably) been.

The 3,518 sales that One Touch sold would have only been enough for either #29 or #30 in this week’s chart. Whereas Girls Aloud’s sales this week would have got them to #27 in Sugababes’ week of release. #18 vs #42 appears to be a huge difference, but when we’re talking less than 600 sales between them… it’s not really that vast of a difference. By the way, #18 in this week's chart - we don't know the sales, but #17 sold 5,156. Top 20 has become tougher to crack since 2021.

Ultimately less effort went into Girls Aloud’s re-release than Sugababes, and I dare say Girls Aloud’s reissue was cheaper to compile together considering they swerved commissioning new remixes or getting the rights to release previously unreleased material. One Touch was also remastered, Sound of the Underground wasn't.

Sugababes format split in their release week:

Total: 3,518

Vinyl: 1,595

CDs: 1,336

Cassettes: 306

Downloads: 189

Streaming: 92

We don't know Girls Aloud's break down for Friday, but it was like this in the Tuesday midweeks, at which point they were #14:

Total (up to that point): 2,778

Vinyl: 1,723

CDs: 964

Downloads: 54

Streaming: 37

(Probably ended up being something like 1800 vinyl, 1000 cd, 75 streaming, 60 downloads by Friday)

Sugababes in their own Tuesday midweek - compared with Girls Aloud's Tuesday midweek:

Total (up to that point): 3,314 [536 more than Girls Aloud]

Vinyl: 1,507 [216 less than Girls Aloud]

CDs: 1,287 [323 more than Girls Aloud]

Cassettes: 303 [303 more than Girls Aloud]

Downloads: 172 [118 more than Girls Aloud]

Streaming: 45 [8 more than Girls Aloud]

It's not exactly accurate to say there were "no promo costs". They still have to pay Chris Fox for his efforts. They also used paid posts on Facebook.

Comparisons to Sugababes - One Touch (their 20th anniversary debut album reissue):

How many variants did One Touch have (apart from the mentioned 4 cassettes)?

Also, how does SOTU compare to Spiceworld's recent reissue (taking into account its staggered release)?

Girls Aloud - Sound of the Underground

1. 3CD

2. Vinyl - Green

3. Vinyl - Picture Disc

4. Download

vs.

Sugababes - One Touch

1. 2CD

2. 2CD - Amazon edition, with bonus CD of demos and mixes

3. Vinyl - Gold

4. Vinyl - Tri-colour

5. Black Cassette

6. Gold Cassette

7. Pink Cassette

8. Green Cassette

9. Download

Going by their official artist stores, the Sugababes Gold vinyl was a cheaper price than the Tri-colour (£21 vs. £26), even though colour was the only difference between them. Girls Aloud's vinyl editions are both £26.99 on their store, although Sugababes store would have had more expensive postage than Girls Aloud's.

Spice Girls - Spiceworld 25

1. 2CD (delayed until 16th December 2022 - other formats were released on 4th November 2022)

2. Vinyl - Picture Disc

3. Vinyl - Clear

4. Double Vinyl - Black

5. Double Cassette

6. Download

(The black vinyl reissue released in 2022 might have contributed some sales that week too)

Which resulted in this, on 11/11/2022:

Total: 2,257 (#46)

Vinyl: 1,603

Cassettes: 279

Downloads: 151

Streaming: 224

Incidentally Girls Aloud 2,925 would have been enough for #29 that week, and Sugababes 3,518 would have got them to #21.

It's hard to make a comparision regarding the delayed CD, but on 23/12/2022 (6 weeks later):

Total: 1,532

CDs: 1,196

Vinyl: 167

Cassettes: 6

Downloads: 6

Streaming: 157

That was Christmas week, and even in that week Girls Aloud would have got to #40, and Sugababes #29.

This is how long each pre-order moment lasted:

Sugababes pre-order launch: Tuesday 11th May 2021 / Release date: Friday 1st October 2021 - 143 days [20 weeks, 3 days] to build up pre-orders for most items. The pink, green and gold cassettes went up for pre-order on 7th September 2021.

Spice Girls pre-order launch: Tuesday 27th September 2022 / Release date: Friday 4th November 2022 - 38 days [5 weeks, 3 days] to build up pre-orders for all items, bar the CD, which was up for pre-order for 80 days [11 weeks, 3 days]

Girls Aloud pre-order launch: Thursday 27th April 2023 / Release date: Friday 16th June 2023 - 50 days [7 weeks, 1 day] to build up pre-orders for all items.

^ So it means that GA have sold more vinyls (per variant). Of course, this could be due to the fact that Spiceworld has been previously available on vinyl, unlike SOTU.

I wish we could have known how many copies Spiceworld had sold on vinyl prior to the 25th anniversary versions! All I know is that the 2020 version only sold 560-ish copies on vinyl in its release week in March 2020

 Thank you, I’m glad! I always enjoy making posts like this

Bit disappointed that it missed the top 40 :( I guess it didn't help that there wasn't a cheaper option available, and also not much of an incentive for the diehards to buy the CD for example as there wasn't much new on there at all. Shame!

Yes, there would have been some expenditure but minimal compared to launching a standard campaign.
