June 24, 20232 yr Author Scarlett Belle - Closure 2010 - Scarlett Belle had a very short life as a girl group in Australia but you may or may not be familiar with the ladies that made up pop duo. Tamara Jaber (former member of Australian pop group Scandal'us, who won Australian Popstars in 2001) and Reigan Derry (who would later go on to finish 4th in the 2014 edition of The X Factor Australia). Of the three singles they released, Closure, Freak Tonight & Lover Boy this is my favourite. Disappointingly it peaked at #38 in Australia and the follow up didn't do much better. An album was never released which is a shame as I seem to recall big wraps on them at the time. P2qcI0Y-Bks Edited June 24, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 24, 20232 yr Author Guy Sebastian - Battle Scars ft Lupe Fiasco 2012 - I had four different songs from Guy Sebastian I wanted to go with before settling on Battle Scars. Guy Sebastian was the winner of the first Australian Idol back in 2003 and he has enjoyed quite a career with 6 #1 singles in Australia as the lead artist. (1 as part of the Australian Idol Final 12 with their 2003 single Rise Up. A cover of the Vanessa Amorosi song). Battle Scars features American rapper Lupe Fiasco and is Guy's biggest selling hit in Australia, being certified 13x Platinum (910,00 sales). The song would spend 6 weeks at #1 and 12 weeks in the op 5 on the way to becoming the #3 selling song in Australia in 2012. Internationally it reached #2 in New Zealand and #71 in America. 4ka1Lgd3SAI Edited June 24, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 24, 20232 yr Author Amy Pearson - Don't Miss You 2007 - British born Australian singer Amy Pearson had 3 top 40 singles in Australia in 2007 and 2008. Don't Miss You was the most successful of the three peaking at #19. (Not Me - #37 and Ready To Fly #40). I remember there was quite a buzz around Amy at this time, Don't Miss You received a lot of radio and television airplay and her third single Ready To Fly was even heavily used in the Australian television advertising for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Unfortunately it didn't appear to mount to much as when her first single from her planned second album failed to chart it was shelved and that was the last we really heard from her. giGcLE7f4M4 Edited June 24, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 24, 20232 yr Author Natalie Bassingthwaighte - Catch Me If You Can 2009 - Rounding out this batch we have our first 'non single'. Natalie Bassingthwaighte is probably most well know for her stint on Aussie soap Neighbours as Izzy Hoyland as well as being the vocalist for Australian dance/pop band Rogue Traders. However in 2008 Natalie left the Rogue Traders after three years with the band to start a solo career and after two top 10 singles (Alive and Someday Soon) she released her debut album in early 2009 titled 1000 Stars. Catch Me If You Can whilst no being a single was track 1 on the album and did get a promotional performance at an International T/20 cricket game at the time. It's a real shame as this is my favourite song of hers and I feel not only would it have been a great single but a great debut single. mkqGPrLGfaI Edited June 24, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 28, 20232 yr I'm very interested in this thread! I didn't listening to Australian music until 2008/2009 so I missed out on most of the decade (aside from hearing some older songs on Australian radio). Listening to all of these now! I really like 'Permission To Shine', solid pop-rock that almost has a country feel to it. Probably stating the obvious, but 'Takin' Back What's Mine' is VERY Britney, and 'He Don't Love You' is very NSYNC. That's not a criticism! Wow at 'I Don't Care', was it produced by William Orbit or just made to sound like it belongs on Ray Of Light? I love Amy Pearson's voice, was already familiar with 'Ready To Fly' which is one of my favorite songs of 2008  I was familiar with a few Natalie Bassingthwaighte songs too, big fan of both '1000 Stars' and 'Someday Soon'!
June 28, 20232 yr I liked some of Natalie's solo stuff, 'This Can't Be Love' from the album was a banger! Anyway, I can't believe we're two pages into this thread without one mention of 'Strawberry Kisses'.
June 28, 20232 yr Author I liked some of Natalie's solo stuff, 'This Can't Be Love' from the album was a banger! Anyway, I can't believe we're two pages into this thread without one mention of 'Strawberry Kisses'. I had contemplated it, but have avoided it so far. Haha.
June 28, 20232 yr Author Another at least 3 coming tomorrow with 2 of them being big dance hits. (That probably gives them away).
June 28, 20232 yr Battle Scars, what a classic! It gained a resurgence in Southeast-Asian Spotify during the pandemic days. ^_^
June 28, 20232 yr Anyway, I can't believe we're two pages into this thread without one mention of 'Strawberry Kisses'. In Australia Nikki had some other minor hits. 5ti49QZL7y0 C0bTIEGAMDE
June 29, 20232 yr Author TV Rock - Flaunt It ft Seany B 2006 - Flaunt It was breakthrough debut single released in February 2006 from Melbourne dance duo TV Rock, which consisted of DJ's Ivan Gough & Grant Smillie. The song features vocals from Seany B who might appear in this thread again in the future. The song was a huge hit from release, debuting at #3, then climbing to #2 then finally #1 where it spent 5 non consecutive weeks at the summit. It would go on to spend a total of 22 weeks in the top 10 and 39 weeks in the top 50. I can remember this being absolutely massive at the time. I was completing my final year of high school and pretty much everyone in my year level loved this song. pZVFuy377Rk Edited June 29, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 29, 20232 yr Author Zoe Badwi - Release Me 2008 - Not to be confused with the Agnes song of the same name released around the same time this dance banger was a massive club hit in Australia over the summer of 2008/09 and reached #1 ARIA Club Music Chart where it stayed for 7 weeks. The song was also co written by Zoë Badwi, Ivan Gough, Grant Smillie (the latter two being responsible for Flaunt It). This was another dance song that just captivated my friendship circles at the time. It was a staple at 21st birthday parities and nights out. It failed to chart on the official singles chart but I have a feeling not being a commercial single made it ineligible to chart, despite it being all over radio and tv at the time. Not to mention it was always doing well on iTunes. Some of you may or may not know that Zoe is a cousin of Jade Thirlwall from Little Mix. aqROWiJMl60 Edited June 29, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 29, 20232 yr Author Kasey Chambers - Not Pretty Enough 2002 - For the first time in this thread we dip into some a little (ok maybe more than a little) country. Not Pretty Enough was released by country singer Kasey Chambers as the third single from her second album Barricades & Brickwalls. Before this release Kasey's highest charting single was The Captain in 2000. It's safe to say she smashed that stat when this went all the way to #1 in Australia in 2002. The song was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2002 ARIA Awards but lost out to Kylie's classic Can't Get You Out Of My Head. As well as hitting #1 the song was the 7th best selling single in Australia in 2002 and the 85th best selling single in Australia of the decade (2000-2009). v5rOdF9rUKI Edited June 29, 20232 yr by One_For_Sorrow
June 29, 20232 yr Author Thank you everyone for the comments so far. I will try and get to commenting on them soon. :)
June 29, 20232 yr 'Don't Miss You' is great and I'm enjoying 'Battle Scars' which it being a huge hit isn't surprising in the slightest.
June 29, 20232 yr x8eDyCRa0mY This is awesome and was a #3 hit, annoyingly STILL isn't available on streaming (unless it is Aus and not the UK or something)
June 29, 20232 yr Vanessa Amorosi - One Thing Leads To Another (2002) This single was released in Europe, but not in Australia. jKQUYyb0iyA
