#14 Summer of love (7.11)

• Directors: Terence O'Connor and Marek Losey

• Location: London

• Released: July 2000

• YouTube views: 3.158.000

At #14 we have the video for Summer of love. It ends 4 places higher (and 0.67 points higher) in this countdown then it’s double A partner When I said goodbye. In contrast the Summer of love video features brightly coloured clothes and energetic dancing. It portrays the band and their dancers as ‘good’ colorful Steps and ‘bad’ dark Steps. At the the end, ‘good’ Steps chase their bad version away with their dancing. This concept was inspired by a hit advertising campaign called Mambo by fashion retailer Gap.

I think it’s is one of their best songs combined with a lovely video. Can you imagine what would’ve happened if they only released When I said goodbye? Other then that #14 seems about right for me. Colorful and fun, though the setting is slightly simply. I also enjoy the styling, especially for the ‘good’ Steps. Summer received votes between a six and an eight making it’s average score a 7.11.

#13 Scared of the dark (7.29)

• Director: Howard Greenhalgh

• Location: London

• Released: April 2017

• YouTube views: 9.500.000

At #13 we find the video for their glorious comeback single, Scared of the dark. Recorded in a studio with rear projection images, Steps perform the song in front of them. The concept of Scared was mainly inspired by Sin City. Other then that there isn’t much information to be found. Fun fact..It’s one their most watched videos on YouTube and it gave them another top 40 hit/silver certification in the UK.

Oh..do you remember hearing this one for the first time? And seeing the video a few days later? Such a moment! At least for me. Nowadays I still adore the song though the video seems a little less impressive. Don’t get me wrong..it’s not bad at all. At moments it just looks like ‘Steps dancing in front of a green screen’. Also, I think we got even better videos after this one.. Scared votes were between a six and a nine, so it ends up with a more then decent 7.29.

#12 Last thing on my mind (7.40)

• Director: Phil Griffin

• Location: Cuba

• Released: April 1998

• YouTube views: 9.075.000

Moving on to #12 we find the video for Last thing on my mind. It was filmed in Cuba and it features Lee picking up all the band members in his convertible at the start of the video. When they sing the chorus, each member is singing a scene is similar to ABBA's Mamma Mia. The final scenes are set around a pool where the band perform the full dance routine. The song became a nice (global) hit and the band were no longer one hit wonders.

This is one of my favorite Steps videos! Shame it missed the top 10 but #12 ain’t too shabby. The reason I enjoy this video? Just check my avatar ;) Besides that I love the summery and carefree vibe. Last thing received votes between a five and a ten making it’s average score a respectable 7.4.

Scared video is fine but you can tell there’s a low budget. Still, their star quality shines through!
This is why we can’t have nice things …

It's why Lee refuses to go topless more often!

Honestly we were ripped off not having instagram back then, there would be so many topless drool worthy selfies of Lee if so

#11 Neon blue (7.43

• Director: Edward Cooke

• Location: The Garage (Highbury)

• Released: 11 August 2017

• YouTube views: 2.100.000

Just missing out on the top 10 is the video for Neon Blue at #11. The scores got very close in this section of the countdown as Neon is 0,03 ahead of #12 and 0,07 behind #10! The treatment for this video was written by Lee, his girlfriend Kerry-Lucy Taylor and Steps' stylist Frank Strachan. It begins with solo shots of each member during the first verse sitting in a room with dust covers draped over various props. It is intercut with shots of a woman sitting at a table in a cafe who has been stood up. The barista looks over and hands her a leaflet to attend a party at a nightclub for people who are feeling downcast. At the same time, a man and woman are shown to be having an argument outside of the nightclub and it is premised that they break up. As the chorus begins, a dust cover is pulled off of a glitter ball and the room transforms into a lively club space whereby Steps are performing a dance routine along with club goers. As the video progresses, the woman from the cafe and the man from the argument meet each other on the dancefloor, their luck having turned around, amongst the crowd of people enjoying themselves and dancing. It ends with confetti and streamers flying around the night club as the band hug each other.

A cute video from their recent material! I enjoy the uplifting vibe and their genuine camaraderie, especially at the end. The only (big) con for me is that it looks a bit budget and random at moments. Also, the message of the song gets a bit lost for me. Other then that Neon received votes between a six and a nine ending with an average score of 7.43.
