(Now I’ve said this it’ll be Honey).

Honey is one of my favourites (and those lyrics are quite lewd x). I bought a 12" vinyl of this single earlier this year, it has quite a few remixes on it!

P.S. Obsessed sold this much on a weekly basis during its time in the chart:

30/08 - #56 - 3,890 (3 days on sale)

out

13/09 - #52 - 4,215 (4 days on sale)

out

22/11 - #160 - 1,340 (The Obsessed Remix became available yet again on Tuesday 17th November  - only went as high as #88 on iTunes on Fri 20th Nov)

29/11 - #62 - 4,350 (Album version of Obsessed finally available in Memoirs release week)

06/12 - #129 - 1,739

out

In the week it was #56: if we just say that 3,890 sales divided by 3 (days) multiplied by 7 (days) is theoretically what it could have sold in a whole week - which would be 9,077 sales - that would have been enough for #24 in the singles chart.

The #52 week: 4,215 divided by 4 (days) multiplied by 7 (days) - 7,377 sales - enough for #33.

I think if the normal version had been available, it likely would have become a Top 20 hit at least? Particularly as a CD single was supposed to be released too.

This is so interesting! I didn't follow the charts at all at that time and didn't even know Obsessed existed so really interesting to see that it actually did have hit potential :o :(

If only they'd just allowed Obsessed to do whatever it was destined to do :( It surely couldn't have harmed! I guess someone on the label had the bright idea that The X Factor + cover version ballad = smash, but... hmm x

Really hoping "Always Be My Baby" is #1 somehow

Think it'll be We Belong Together or All I Want For Christmas... though, really hoping it's not the latter.

10. It's Like That | 8.833 Highest Scores: 10: (JackTheeStallion, elgornio, JosephStyles, Jay, AaronTM), Lowest Scores: 6: (Bjork)

Kicking off the top 10 in almighty style is It's Like That, released in January 2005 as the lead single from Mariah's 10th studio album The Emancipation of Mimi & features ab-libs by Fatman Scoop & Jermaine Dupri & borrows the hook "It's Like That Y'all" from the Run–D.M.C. tracks "Hollis Crew" and "Here We Go (Live)". The song was written by Mariah, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, and Johntá Austin, and produced by Mariah, Jermaine, and Manuel. The lyrics focus celebration and freedom, with Carey's alter-ego "Mimi" being emancipated. Several other tracks were contenders for the album's lead single such as 'Stay The Night', 'Say Somethin'' & 'Shake It Off' were all up for consideration before L.A. Reid suggested to Mariah she record a few more strong songs to ensure the album's success. Upon release the song gained positive reviews & became a commercial success, after a 2 year absence from the charts. In the USA it reached a #16, her most successful song in 5 years. Worldwide it found stronger charting with top 10 peaks in Hungary, UK, Italy, Australia & Switzerland, as well as top 20 peaks in a further 7 countries. In 2006 the song received a nomination for a Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards.

The highest ranking song on this countdown not to gain any 11's. This track is easily one of Mariah's strongest lead singles of her career and serves as the theme song to a very successful comeback. Effortlessly sultry, elegant and yet at the same time remains one of her sexiest songs yet, full of swagger, sparse hip-bop beats, heavy bass sounds and simple melodies, this track just oozes class and it helps that its catchy as hell & serving as the perfect comeback single after a rather difficult last couple of years where it looked like Mariah's hit making days were behind here, but thankfully this cracking number proved those naysayers wrong. This could easily be seen as a blueprint for any artist on how to sustain longevity in a music career.
It’s Like That was the first single I’d absolutely loved by her since Loverboy (I know, I know x), a triumphant return to form. Which then went up another level with We Belong Together. The Emancipation era was an amazing time to be a Mariah fan.

9. Vision of Love | 8.857 Highest Scores: 11: (Bjork, Qween), 10: (Nina West, Simon, Lukuzz, Liam.k., Jay, AaronTM), Lowest Scores: 5: (Herbs)

At #9 is the one that started it all Vision of Love, Mariah's debut single released in May 1990 as the lead single from her self-titled debut album Mariah Carey. The song was written by Mariah and Ben Margulies. After being featured on her demo tape for Columbia Records, it was re-recorded and produced by Rhett Lawrence and Narada Michael Walden. Upon release the song received universal acclaim from music critics and would become her first chart topper in the USA, where it remained for 4 weeks, and was ranked 6th on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart. Elsewhere it would also manage to top the charts in Canada & New Zealand, along with top 10 peaks in Iceland, Netherlands, Australia, UK & Ireland. The song would also garner several award wins & nominations with 3 nominations at the Grammy Awards & winning Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as winning the Soul Train Music Award for Best Female R&B/Soul single and a BMI Award for Best Songwriter.

Talk about making a strong first impression with this sleek sounding mid-tempo ballad that defies the conventions by skipping the traditional verse-chorus-verse structure of pop songs. From the shimmering first note synths that builds to a smooth, classy soulful number with gospel elements, which gives Mariah just enough space to showcase her remarkable vocal range especially during the middle-eight section where she belts out those iconic whistle notes brimming with power and confidence. This marked the perfect introduction and remains one of the finest debut singles of all-time, firmly establishing Mariah Carey as a force to be reckoned with. Even after 33 years the song still manages to sound fresh and has aged like a fine wine.
noooo Vision of love "only" 9 :/ all the singles from Music Box already out :/

I am a little surprised that not one Music Box single could make it into the Top 10 tbh! Though I'm not mad at all at any of the 10 that have made it, they're all great.

noooo Vision of love "only" 9 :/

^ Mariah's stans in 1990 when Vision of Love fell from #9 in the UK!

Vision of Love is an incredibly strong debut, it's like the perfect showcase of Mariah's talent and artistry. It's a pity Europe weren't as taken with this song as the US/Canada were. Although that can be applied to her first and second album eras generally.

8. Emotions | 8.88 Highest Scores: 11: (Josh, AaronTM), 10: (Nina West, Davidson, Lukuzz, Jord, rafik4u), Lowest Scores: 5.5: (Herbs)

At #8 is Emotions, released in August 1991 as the lead single from Mariah's 2nd studio album of the same name. The song was written & produced by Mariah, Robert Clivillés, and David Cole of C+C Music Factory. Perhaps the song is best known for the extensive use of Mariah's upper range and extensive use of the whistle register. After working with the C+C Music Factory, they composed the song 'You're So Cold', which became the first choice for the album's lead single. However after a second session with the production team, they feeling a lighter mood & 'Emotions' was created and finally decided upon that as the first single. Upon release it gained positive reviews from music critics, and became her 5th consecutive #1 on the US Billboard charts, giving her the distinction of being the first (and, to date, only) act to have their first five singles make number 1 on the Hot 100. Worldwide it was a moderate success by topping the Canadian charts, and hitting top 10 peaks in Greece, Netherlands & New Zealand, as well as top 20 peaks in Australia & UK. In 1992 the song would earn a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and would win a BMI award for Best Song.

Another perfect lead single choice which expertly showcases her extensive vocal range, as well as expanding her musical range and of course the song takes full advantage of that glorious whistle register to deliver one of her most unforgettable and extraordinary vocal performances, particularly on that climatic high octave notes, which makes this one of Mariah's very best songs of her entire career. The delightful up-tempo disco inspired beats, beautiful melodies, pumping house keyboards & dazzling chorus, all of which dances around Mariah's vocals superbly & you couldn't ask for a better song to represent the follow-up album. This deserved far more than it's mere #17 peak in the UK, it should have been top 10 at the very least.
surprised this beat Vision of Love, and even Dreamlover
Vision Of Love and Emotions are both perfection, expected at least one of them in the top 5
Crazy that Emotions only got #17 in the UK! Feels like it's more well remembered than that id say.

Always in control, how you do it, I don’t know

7. #Beautiful (ft Miguel) | 8.952 Highest Scores: 11: (JackTheeStallion, Jay), 10: (gooddelta, Simon, Jord, Jade, JosephStyles, rafik4u), Lowest Scores: 5.5: (Herbs)

At #7 is #Beautiful, released in May 2013 as the lead single from Mariah's 14th studio album Me I Am Mariah.. The Elusive Chanteuse, alongside American singer Miguel. The song was written by Mariah, Miguel, Nathan Perez, Brooke Davis, Mac Robinson, and Brian Keith Warfield, with production by Mariah, Miguel & Nathan. The artists didn't reveal that they had collaborated on the song, until April 2013 (just a couple of weeks before release), when Mariah revealed the title in a 25-second teaser video during season twelve of American Idol. she would premiere the music video on that same show on May 9th. Upon release the song received positive reviews from music critics & became her biggest commercial success in several years by reaching a #15 peak on the US Billboard charts, becoming Mariah's 32nd top 20 hit & Miguel's 3rd top 20 hit. Elsewhere it managed top 10 peaks in Australia, Denmark & New Zealand, as well as top 20 peaks in Sweden, Hong Kong & Netherlands. In the UK it managed to reach a moderate #22 peak, becoming her 39th top 40 hit there.

This track was definitely the best thing she has released in several years & to date its probably her last great song. A stunning mid-tempo number built around warm arrangements with sensual soulful R&B grooves, its a simple yet catchy song that not only captures that old school vibe, but also captures that summer feeling perfectly. Okay the song does feel more like Miguel featuring Mariah Carey, but when they both sing together, the vocals blend effortlessly, making for a perfect collaboration, with fantastic vocals by both artists. Overall this is a really strong track and a firm standout in Mariah's discography.

Thrilled that #Beautiful has managed to make it this high up the results. It was a very pleasant surprise when it did well in the charts. That 6 week tease of it being just outside the Top 20 (24-24-24-23-22-22) and never making it was a slight shame, but the longevity was pleasing. It ended up being the 116th best seller of 2013, ahead of numerous Top 10 hits!

It's a pity that 'Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse' wasn't ready for release until a year afterwards. I wonder if the album could have been a better seller while #Beautiful was a hit?
