think I have never ever heard that 19 song before

sounds great on 1st listen

So every #1 which entered outside the Top 10 in 1980-84 had at least one double-digit climb? I'd never given that a thought! A few only just managed one (e.g. Careless Whisper 12-2-1) but for a song entering as low as #28 to be the first without any in the 1980s is quite impressive. I wonder if any #1 in history has climbed from #40 without any, or entered lower without any on its way to #1 even below or when entering the Top 40...

I think 28 was its chart entry, was it not charting outside the top 40 too for a few weeks?

Yes it did climb from outside the top 40 so I assume gezza’s stat is for the top 40 only and not the whole chart

“19” still has a very firm grasp on the top spot, though sales are down slightly at 135,558 it's margin at the top accelerates to triple the sales of the runner up track, the fading Phyllis Nelson’s “Move Closer” (45,934). The song was subject to minor controversy this week when it emerged that the documentary used for most of the spoken samples has been largely discredited, the documentary in question is called "Vietnam Requiem" and has been debunked as anti- Vietnam propaganda with even the central claim (as far as the song goes anyway) that the average age of a soldier in the war was not in fact 19 but over 23. No matter as far as the song is concerned anyway.

Meanwhile the 8th release from Style Council follows five previous ones into the top 10 with ease climbing 13-6 (28,118) in its second week. “Walls Come Tumbling Down” is the lead track to the band’s second album “Our Favourite Shop” which is now just three weeks away from hitting the shops.

Duran Duran are back with their tenth overall, and ninth consecutive, top 10 single “A View To A Kill” which is of course the theme to the new James Bond film of the same name. It becomes the fifth single by the group to enter straight into the top 10 and is already a considerably bigger hit than the last Bond theme “All Time High” by Rita Coolidge which disappointed at No 75, indeed it is already the highest charting Bond theme since Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does It Better” reached No 7 also back in 1977. In short it’s a return to form chart wise for the themes as it debuts at No 7 (26,639)- how high can it go?

Joe Fagin was in the top 3 last year with the theme from “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,” entitled “That’s Livin Alright”- now one of the stars of the series has his own single. Jimmy Nail played the character “Oz” and has recorded a cover of the 1978 #2 Rose Royce track “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” with an album planned for sometime this year, it rushes 20-8 (26,639) so it hasn’t dishonoured the original chart run though some have commented that the singing may not be quite as good!

Debarge advance 9-4 (30,787) and increase sales nominally but are way behind Bronski Beat/ Marc Almond who hold at No 3 (42,092), indeed everything outside the top 3 struggles thanks to bank holiday which lost a day of sales, Steve Arrington is also heading the right way 7-5 (29,631). Two fallers to round off, Tears For Fears drop 4-9 (23,290) the same position they climb to in the US, and Simple Minds recede 8-10 (22,950) but will be a having a party this week as “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” becomes the band’s first US chart topper!

1- 19- Paul Hardcastle (135,558)

2- MOVE CLOSER- Phyllis Nelson (45,934)

4- RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT- Debarge (30,787)

5- I FEEL SO REAL- Steve Arrington (29,631)

6- WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN- Style Council (28,118)

7- A VIEW TO A KILL- Duran Duran (26,639)

8- LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE- Jimmy Nail (26,639)

9- EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD- Tears For Fears (23,290)

'Love Don't Live Her Any More' is good, goes for a Paul Young Wherever I Lay My Hat or Mr Mister style atmospheric epic vocal.

'Rhythm of the Night' is a cheesy but nice song.

'Feel So Real' is a good upbeat song, obviously very gospel influenced lyrically.

loving I Feel so Real, that's a great discovery

never liked Love don't live here anymore in any version, the original, Madonna, this one is very weird and with poor vocals

another Duran Duran single that sounds like a clone of all their singles, shock :)

surprisingly, or not as they always saved the best songs for later singles,

Eurythmics struggled with the lead single from their 4th album Be Yourself Tonight

and Would I Lie to You only peaked at #17

Paul Hardcastle remains an easy winner this week with sales of “19” continuing to be impressive at 92,327 bringing the first month sales of the track to 416,007 making the half a million mark just a few weeks away.

That all leaves Duran Duran out in the cold, not to mention a distant second place on sales of 62,730, a 141% sales hike thanks in part to TOTP, the actual film itself isn’t due for release in the UK until next month though the US premiere is this week. Jimmy Nail however shoots 8-3 (40,613) again with TOTP help as both songs passed Phyllis Nelson forcing her to move 2-4 (36,465).

marillion87.jpg

Taking their name from a JRR Tolkien novel, Marillion have steadily cultivating a strong fanbase since their inception in 1979 culminating in their only UK to 20 hit to date “Garden Party”. Their back with a third studio album “Misplaced Childhood” due next month and lead single “Kayleigh” which marks a commercial turn from the band and has been rewarded with wholesale radio support for the song which debuted at No 15 last week instantly becoming their highest peaking single and now advances to no 7 (28,237)

National team singles aside Football Clubs themselves haven’t been that good in creating hit singles with only Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea becoming chart stars, and only the latter two making the top 10. Now we can add Manchester United who helm “We All Follow Man Utd” 35-10 (24,072) and easily outperform the team’s last effort in 1983 "Glory Glory Man Utd” which flopped despite being penned by former Herman’s Hermits member Frank Renshaw. The single is of course a tie in with the group’s appearance in the FA Cup final which they won 1-0 on Saturday past, so expect this to climb again, if only temporarily.

Everything else not covered yet is falling sadly, Marc Almond & Bronski Beat collapse 3-5 (35,731), mirroring that move are Debarge 4-6 (34,153) while Steve Arrington tumbles 5-8 (25,908) and Style Council ebb 6-9 (25,653)- every Style Council released so far has peaked in its second week and it looks like this has followed suit.

1- 19- Paul Hardcastle (92,327)

2- A VIEW TO A KILL- Duran Duran (62,730)

3- LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE- Jimmy Nail (40,613)

4- MOVE CLOSER- Phyllis Nelson (36,465)

5- I FEEL LOVE (MEDLEY)- Marc Almond/ Bronski Beat (35,751)

6- RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT- Debarge (34,153)

7- KAYLEIGH- Marillion (28,237)

8- I FEEL SO REAL- Steve Arrington (25,908)

9- WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN- Style Council (25,653)

10- WE ALL FOLLOW MAN UTD- Man Utd Football Squad (24,072)

Incidentally Billy Idol's version of "Don't you forget about me" surfaced years later though it's clear why Simple Minds got the gig

Well done Gezza for not using the ‘tumbling down’ phrase to describe Style Councils single this week!

Love this Marillion era ❤️

It’s a pity Duran Duran had given up on appearing on totps by this stage (apart from the lead from the 1986 and 1993 albums in future)!

Another solid, if unspectacular, week at the top for “19” which sold 84,014 copies to spend a fourth week at No 1. It doing so it joins “I Know Him So Well” and “Easy Lover” as the year’s longest chart toppers, Hardcastle is currently busy making the parent album which is promised before Christmas!

No TOTP for either Duran Duran or Jimmy Nail eased the pressure on Hardcastle though Duran Duran hold steady at No 2 on 57,562 thanks to the publicity around the film premiere, the song is the highest peaking James Bond related single ever in the UK which is some achievement, not to mention Duran Duran’s third top 2 single on the trot. The group are of course exploring other avenues during 1985 with the members splitting to form Power Station and Arcadia, the former already scoring the No 14 hit “Some Like It Hot” earlier this year, they still show they have commercial cloud when they regroup though. They pay the price for not issuing a 12" of " A View To A Kill" as sales of the 7" are now higher than "19" last week! Has it cost them a chart topper? Nail holds at No 3 on an improved sale of 51,000 and may yet threaten the Durranies.

Two former members of Thin Lizzy reunite for the track “Out In The Fields” which results in their biggest solo hits. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott are the two in question and the song concerns the troubles in Northern Ireland which is of course Moore’s homeland, Lynott, though growing up in Dublin, was actually born in England. Moore’s only top 10 single prior to this was back in 1979 with “Parisienne Walkways” which featured a vocal from….Lynott, he is uncredited on the track though but he is clearly the bringer of chart fortunes as “Out In The Fields” climbs 18-8 (26,384), marking Lynott’s first appearance as a soloist in the big 10.

Lurking just outside the US top 10 this week are Katina & The Waves, the band are actually British so it must come as something of a nice surprise this week as “Walking On Sunshine” advances 20-9 (25,772) to finally better its US position. The track dates back to 1983 when the group’s debut album was released in Canada (of all places) and in truth until their current single they were little known outside that country so it’s nice to see the UK giving some attention to home grown talent.

It’s been seven years since the last Bryan Ferry solo album but it’s now only a fortnight until the release of “Boys And Girls” which will now house a top 10 single with “Slave To Love” inching 11-10 (22,882) this week. Ferry has had 4 solo top 10ers to date though his last was way back in 1977, he’s been very busy with Roxy Music in the interim until the group disbanded in 1983, the album promises to be a stellar affair featuring Nile Rogers, Dave Gilmour, and Mark Knopfler among others.

Marillion continue to improve 7-4 (42,092), as do Debarge oddly who rise 6-5 (33,218) despite a slight sales dip- last week they fell and got a sales increase!, Phyllis Nelson drops 4-6 (31,382) whilst Bronski Beat/ Marc Almond dip 5-7 (27,727).

1- 19- Paul Hardcastle (84,014)

2- A VIEW TO A KILL- Duran Duran (57,562)

3- LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE- Jimmy Nail (51,000)

4- KAYLEIGH- Marillion (42,092)

5- RHYTHM OF THE NIGHT- Debarge(33,218)

6- MOVE CLOSER- Phyllis Nelson (31,382)

7- I FEEL LOVE (MEDLEY)- Bronski Beat/ Marc Almond (27,727)

8- OUT IN THE FIELDS- Gary Moore/ Phil Lynott (26,384)

9- WALKING ON SUNSHINE- Katrina & The Waves (25,772)

10- SLAVE TO LOVE- Bryan Ferry (22,882)

Move Closer is holding up pretty well, it’s been a much bigger hit than I would have expected

Oh just learnt a lot from that post

that Out of the Fields songs I knew it, but always thought it was Iron Maiden :o

also didn't know Bryan Ferry had had a music career in the 70s prior to Roxy Music

always thought Slave to Love was his first solo hit

one band I never seen the appeal is Marillion, always found this Fish guy very unlikeable and the music very meh

As you were at the top of the charts this week as “19” remains unchallenged though it is very much in decline now posting a sale of just 60,129, that's the second lowest tally of the year behind USA for Africa though the May Bank Holiday played its part. On the positive though it is now the longest chart topper of the year with five weeks at the top and total sales of 560,150, something not to be sniffed at.

With the UK general release of “A View To A Kill” still a fortnight away (13th) it looks like it won’t save Duran Duran, they hold at No 2 for a third week but sold a mere 47,294, and can thank a lack of Marillion on TOTP as “Kayleigh” only rises 4-3 (40,970) but they won’t have that grace next week.

hqdefault.jpg

Surely the favourite for No 1 next week must come from the Crowd. The charity amalgamation has been formed in reaction to the tragic events at Bradford City Football stadium on May 11th when 56 people died in a fire that destroyed a stand, an event which resulted in Gerry Marsden forming a “Band Aid”esque group to raise funds for the victims and re-record “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, a track taken to No 1 by his former group Gerry & The Pacemakers back in 1963. The song rockets 52-4 (35,139) and in doing so becomes the highest climber into the top 5 in chart history though some have questioned the calibre of the stars involved and whether stars such as Johnny Logan, Joe Fagin, Nolan Sisters, and Jim Diamond would raise the maximum income for the fund.

il_fullxfull.662459516_ns7i_grande.jpg

Written for the 1983 film “A Night In Heaven” the track “Obsession” has been recorded by US band Animotion for their debut album and has already been a No 6 hit for them Stateside. That success has now crossed the Atlantic and floats 12-6 (30,719) to match its US peak.

hqdefault.jpg

Billy Ocean proves that last year’s come back “Caribbean Queen” was no one-off as he’s back in the top 10 with “Suddenly”, performing notably better than the song released between those two tracks “Loverboy” which only made No 15. All three tracks are from his album named after this single which hasn’t really done as well as anticipated since its release last November, it moves to a new peak this week 52-40 and breaks the top 40 for the first time, hopefully it can make its mark now as the single moves 19-9 (27,693)

Scritti_Politti_ScrittiPolitti_2953.jpg

Two week’s time sees the release of the second Scritti Politti album “Cupid & Psyche 85” which will contain last year’s hit “Wood Beez” and their current single, which equals the peak of that track, “Word Girl” as it rises 15-10 (25,007). Singer Gartside has said the title alludes the fact that the forthcoming album contains songs which lyrics all include the word “Girl”, the B-side “Flesh & Blood” is also the same song but with new lyrics sung by Rankin Ann designed to show the word from a female angle.

Phil Lynott appears on the Crowd track and also one place lower on Gary Moore’s “Out In The Fields” which rises 8-5 (31,467) and lower down Katrina & The Waves also improve 9-8 (29,291) whilst finally making the top 10 stateside. Jimmy Nail rounds things off as he falls 3-7 (29,903)

1- 19- Paul Hardcastle (60,129)

2- A VIEW TO A KILL- Duran Duran (47,294)

3- KAYLEIGH- Marillion (40,970)

4- YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE- The Crowd (35,139)

5- OUT IN THE FIELDS- Gary Moore/ Phil Lynott (31,467)

6- OBSESSION- Animotion (30,719)

7- LOVE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE- Jimmy Nail (29,903)

8- WALKING ON SUNSHINE- Katrina & The Waves (29,291)

9- SUDDENLY- Billy Ocean (27,693)

10- WORD GIRL- Scritti Politti (25,007)

Bradford city fire in case you don't know the event.

warning: it does have disturbing scenes!

Obsession

I used to hear it on GTA Vice City and spent ages looking for it to no avail… primarily because it turned out it wasn’t by the Human League despite sounding exactly like them.
