September 21, 20231 yr 'Everglow' is the first (and probably one of very few) that I gave a lower score than its overall average, I remember that having its fans but I always found it quite distinctly average. 'Up&Up' is a really nice one though and quite surprised to see it this low.
September 21, 20231 yr Author 31. Smint (9) Roba // Lowest Score (0) Jessie Where) WAGbq3A9HfA?si=OO-aQt3_A0py6g4S The two to miss the top 30 are 'The Hardest Part' and the big #2 hit from 2017 'Something Just Like This'. 'The Hardest Part' was the 4th single off X&Y but it didn't chart and was released to radio alone for whatever reason, in hindsight it probably wouldn't have been too big a hit even if it did make the top 40. The video is quite clever as it uses the band playing live from when they were shooting the video for it but it also uses digital enhancement by making them appear to be watching an 84 and a 25 years old on stage dancing on the programme Attitudes which aired on Amercian cable's Lifetime and that particular performance was from 1990. Both of these songs were equal on average score and neither picked up an 11, they did pick up two 10's each but 'Something Just Like This' wins out via picking up a 2nd 9 which THP didn't. SJLT was first premiered on The 2017 Brit Awards and peaked thereafter at 2. For some it felt like a sell out moment but it clearly worked regardless for them!

September 21, 20231 yr I like to pretend 'Something Just Like This' doesn't exist x (I do like some of The Chainsmokers' songs tbf but not this one)
September 21, 20231 yr SJLT is Coldplay's best samg, wxcepr Mindight, since Charlie Brown and Peincess of China!!!
September 21, 20231 yr Author 29. Hurts Like Heaven = Avg Score – 5.8 (Highest Score (10) Chez Wombat // Lowest Score (1) JulianT) C8KV0mzqTXY?si=8aVRaUTxrtUaxX73 30. Strawberry Swing = Avg Score – 5.70 (Highest Score (9) Michael, Smint, seven., (Lowest Score (1) Wardy) h3pJZSTQqIg?si=uEYfP-p8TKpwqx1P Starting the top 30 we head to 'Strawberry Swing' which is the first track from Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends to be knocked out and since it was 5th release not a surprise it charted at... #158. 'Hurts Like Heaven' drops out as well but Chez Wombat was a big fan giving the track his 10!
September 21, 20231 yr Must have been thinking about something else when I rated The Hardest Part a 10! It''s definitely better than everything that came before it but definitely ain't no 10
September 21, 20231 yr Aw 'Hurts Like Heaven' is another one I gave an 8 but very close to a 9 and probably should have been one, I've actually had it stuck in my head a few times since relistening to their discog for this, moreso than any of their other songs I think for whatever reason! I guess it is at least one of the higher finishing non top 40 hits even being this low (I tend to feel like non charting songs have quite a disadvantage in these kind of rates I guess due to people being less familiar with them)
September 21, 20231 yr Hurts Like Heaven is great! Really underrated in their discography, I wish it had been released ahead of Charlie Brown rather than when it was never gonna do anything, especially as that's not a highlight from them at all.
September 21, 20231 yr Something Just Like This being one of Coldplay's biggest selling/streamed hits is pretty undeserved. I do like the verses and the melody generally but that production already sounds so dated and bland to me. I guess Chainsmokers were of their time. Up & Up is a bit of an early exit for me, it's quite anthemic I thought. The Hardest Part seems quite low but I guess we are getting into the modern classics stage already.

September 21, 20231 yr Love love 'The Hardest Part' to bits. I should have given it a 10. The 'X and Y' album was a massive comfort to me in a very difficult period of my life and that track along with album tracks such as 'A Message', 'Swallowed by the Sea' and the title track helped especially. It was played enough on the radio to be a single I thought. 'Strawberry Swing' although clearly not commercial enough to be a hit (song structure isn't exactly radio friendly) is divine/heavenly.Sort of thing they would put as a closing scene in a movie with a happy ending after a lot of hardship. 'Something Just Like This' was a great catchy Coldplay track. I think.the Chainsmokers ruined it slightly with that choppy, tropical sound (mind you I absolutely hated 'Closer' to bits). 'Hurts Like Heaven' doesn't deserve to beat those three IMO as nothing special.
September 21, 20231 yr Author Love love 'The Hardest Part' to bits. I should have given it a 10. You did give it a 10 :P unless you meant 11! -- Coming up later today (gone midnight friday now and perhaps another surprising result to come I'd say)!
September 22, 20231 yr The Chainsmokers collab is the main one I rated high so far, not heard it since it was out though, so not sure if it's aged well or not - but I dont usually change my mind that fast! Give it a couple of decades and see if it's sounding dated/nostalgic then :)
September 22, 20231 yr I didn’t realise Something Just Like This was relatively poorly regarded (I didn’t use Buzzjack when it was out) - I think it’s rather lovely.
September 22, 20231 yr Author 27. Hymn For The Weekend (Ft Beyoncé) = Avg Score - 5.92 (No 11's, 2 10's) (Highest Score (10) Cow P, Smint // Lowest Score (-1) Chez Wombat) YykjpeuMNEk?si=UI4jpyOyEXfyMj1U 28. Orphans = Avg Score – 5.92 (No 11's or 10's) (Highest Score (9) Popchartfreak, Cow P, Smint // (0) Michael) PXKYA-zmzTY?si=P2Sbr4KTz0-1aWB2 Considering it was one of the last two releases of the 2010's, 'Orphans' has done pretty well to make it to 28th in the rate here. It was released along with 'Arabesque' as part of Everyday Life which in itself is a double album with the first disc titled Sunrise and the other Sunset which you can find this on the latter one! Now for one that you may or may not have expected to see as low and that's 'Hymn For The Weekend' which Beyoncé lended herself to. Was a lingering hit in the chart, eventually peaking at 6. It seemed Chris wanted to release a club song that people could dance to and I guess for the public it was along with many here (especially Cow and Smint) who gave it a 10 but some of us weren't so taken to it as I gave it a 4 with the lowest coming from Chez, a -1, so it certainly didn't prop it up like you'd think it would!
September 22, 20231 yr Hymn For The Weekend is a bit of a grim dirge really - certainly my least favourite of their Top 10 hits.
September 22, 20231 yr 'The Hardest Part' was such an unbelievably odd choice of single when they had 'Square One', 'White Shadows' and even 'What If' available to choose from :/ I really quite enjoy 'Hymn'.
September 22, 20231 yr Have to agree with 'Hymn For The Weekend' being their least essential top 10 hit (not counting SJLT, The Chainsmokers can claim that :P), maybe on par with 'My Universe', but it still does its job well enough. Shame it ended up outpeaking the vastly superior 'Adventure Of A Lifetime' though. Glad to see 'Arabesque' rightfully beating 'Orphans' despite being the lesser known of the 2 though I was a fan of both!
September 23, 20231 yr 'Hymn for the Weekend' was fantastic IMO. It's got double meaning of hedonism but also spirituality too. I loved the ending to it - vaguely Unkle-like sounding with that spacey opera sound. And although I'm pretty woke. I did think (as in the case of Avril Lavigne's 'Hello Kitty' video) that the cultural appropriation charge against the video was a bit ridiculous - a bit naff maybe but not offensive. And the video itself didn't get many dislikes either. 'Orphans' doing fairly well here - considering they were post their imperial phase It's a very rousing, inspiring track and fairly brave, considering they didn't go for the collabs or commercial feel of so many of their other singles during their late period. Don't think I ever watched the video for that so might check it out now.
