It looks very likely that this is going to be the last time we see one of the defining artists of my chart, Watsky make an appearance. If that is so, he's signed off in style with 'Paper Nihilist' being the first of four entries. Despite the lower budgets, his video's have always had a flair for the dramatic and shot to the moon with their concepts and this one is suitably odd, telling the story of a day-in-the-life of a drawing of a man. It was directed, produced, edited and animated by Watsky himself which is very impressive. He has moved away from the standard rap that dominated the beginning of his career and this is one of his most experimental yet in terms of sound but it works especially well in the context of the album.

The first artist to make multiple appearances in the top 100 is Leigh-Anne with her debut solo release 'Don't Say Love' faring better then her follow-up. I appreciate that she picked a sound and went for it with this one, with palpable 'garage' vibes coming from 'Don't Say Love'. However, the track feels like it doesn't do much to innovate the sound and in turn just feels out-of-date. I can still enjoy a garage banger but you can easily hear why it didn't do as well as 'PinkPantheress' stuff as it feels a lot less fresh. Having said that, I'm enjoying my listen of it now more than I have done since it was released.

One of the most marmite songs of the year, your opinion of this song largely comes down to how you answer one question: child choirs: sometimes moving or wack and corny? On paper, this song is 100% cheese, a rapper famed for the gang life making a song talking about how violence is bad with some cute kids singing the hook and Durk's verse does fit into the mold of this stereotype. But one thing that's undeniable is Cole's verse. You know what you're going to get from him and these sort of tracks that allow him to share his informed opinions on both the game and wider society as a whole, are his bread and butter. He's the perfect guest feature for this and we're lucky we got him because Durk's second choice was apparently Kanye. 2004 Kanye sure but 2023 Kanye... yikes.

Robbed of a top 10 peak due to it apparently having no video streaming points added despite the lyric video having 4.5 million views on YouTube, 'UK Rap' just sounds like a massive hit. While 'Sprinter' and 'Trojan Horse' found some middle ground, 'Our 25th Birthday' was definitely the Dave track on the EP and 'UK Rap' is definitely the Cench track on the EP. This is a classic Central Cee track and he just knows how to slide on a beat like this. Aside from the TMI 'foot picture' bar, Dave proves he can adapt to any beat and provides a fun verse.

This is one of two tracks on 'Super Over' where I feel like Leah nearly falls back on bad habits and makes it too much of a TikTok chasing song. I feel that had I not already been won over by the rest of the album and I heard this outside of that context, I probably wouldn't like it. It certainly wasn't one of the tracks that appealed to me when I first sat down to listen to the album but was a big benefactor of repeat listens as it's playful nature and slightly cringy elements (the sound effects, the 'bedroom sounds' line, the accents) became part of it's charm and made it standout amongst the other tracks. It's quite impressive that a 2 minute track can have 3 separate cringy elements :lol: A true guilty pleasure for me and not one I would recommend anyone else to listen to.

I don't think it would be at all controversial to say that 2023 was not a banner year for Stormzy. His 2022 album 'This Is What I Mean' had underperformed but it was ok because that could be explained by it's less commercial nature. But then he came back in 2023 with some massive collabs (Fredo, RAYE) and they have underperformed too. It makes the track here, 'Longevity Flow' feel like it has an almost ironic title. He's rapping rapping on this one but it still feels like it's the ugly sister of 'Mel Made Me Do It'. Even the cameos don't hit the same. Tom Cruise is in the video but it doesn't hit like Jose Mourinho or Usain Bolt did in the now iconic video for 'Mel'. This feels like an important moment in Stormzy's career where he can really cement himself as a GOAT or completely fall-off with his next release.

Maisie makes her second appearance with the geniously titled 'BSC'. Not knowing what the initialism stands for, only makes the impact where the true title is revealed all the more effective. This originally felt like it was too on-the-nose for the stereotypical of the 'crazy girlfriend' but I eventually got fully on board with it and it feels like the perfect song for Maisie to write. It's one that goes off on tour with everyone screaming the words. To show how much 'The Good Witch' dominated my listening habits in 2023, this was my 12th most played track of the year.

In the year I went to see 50 Cent in concert (and exactly 20 years after my sister saw him in concert), Strandz bagged himself a smash with an obvious homage to the G-Unit sound with 'Us Against The World'. The Smokey Robinson sample works a treat and it's just a really fun throwback to an era of Hip-Hop that I much prefer to now. One of the highlights is the highly unorthodox beat with the off-beat piano keys never landing where you expect. The three MCs glide through the track and 8AE's hook is the perfect connection between the verses.

This seemed to be a lot of people's last favourite from the new tracks on Taylor's Version of 1989 but it's my 2nd favourite. I just really love the way she decides to perform this one, she's seems to know exactly when she needs to go double time and when she needs stretch out a line for maximum impact. The chorus is great but it's the outro that really stands out with the hardest-hitting lines.

AJ Tracey hasn't missed my EOY top 100 since his debut in 2018 but he left it late in 2023. Too late, in fact, for his 5th #1 single, 'Wifey Riddim 4' that topped my final 2023 chart but luckily, this done enough in a month to sneak him in. This was one transatlantic collaboration I was not expecting, teaming Ladbroke Grove's own AJ Tracey with New York's 'Bas'. Although, Bas was born in Paris so he does have European ties. This is a bouncy banger with production coming from two of the members of 'Jungle' and is exactly the kind of song at which both artists excel.

Starting the second quarter of this countdown is a debuting artist, Aliyah's Interlude with 'IT GIRL'. We've now had consecutive December hits from my chart and both are incredibly bouncy and summery. We've already had one TikTok-er with Addison Rae and now we have a second as Aliyah gained fame on the app for her bright and exciting fashion style that she calls 'AliyahCore'. I don't know what there is to say about this one, it's just a massive bop. It has about three separate catchy hooks, and is performed with the perfect amount of cockiness and condescension. I don't know where she could go next with a follow-up, for what it is, still is done to perfection.

The last track to be annouced today and it's the first of three entries for Bebe Rexha. I always find it disappointing that she can only seem to find any success with her dance features while her solo work flops because I find her own work so much stronger. 'I'm Not High, I'm In Love' is definitely the song from 'Bebe' that feels most to be like it's trying to be a 'Future Nostalgia' track, it even starts very similarly to 'Love Again'. But the disco vibes on this one are impossible to not fall for. The chorus sounds huge and the panning of the audio in the pre-chorus just helps raise the excitement and makes it sound even bigger. It's quite a simple track, especially lyrically, but it works really well.

Good to see My Love here, it's really infectious! All of the Girls You Loved Before was a lovely extension to the Lover era, and I got it bad is pure pop excellence *.*
