This was the other song I was referring to from 'Super Over' where it does feel like Leah Kate might be reverting to the 'trying to manufacture a TikTok hit sound' by awkwardly interpolating 'My Name Is' and with the spoken interlude. But aside from those moments, the song is otherwise really fun. I can see why she decided to release it as the first single, it does feel like it wants to recrate the '10 Things I Hate About You' magic and even references the song in the first verse. It was boosted very high in my last.fm chart just because it had the listens from when it came out and the then the listens from being on one of my top albums of the year.

If I'm not mistaken, at 2 minutes and 26 seconds, I believe this is the shortest song in Taylor's discography but she's clinical with the time she has and created a wonderfully crafted little synthy pop track. It also feels like a risk when a singer tries to throw in some falsetto in a song but it really works here and she sounds great. Just like the song from 1989 (Taylor's Version) that reached #1 officially, this is apparently written about the 2nd biggest popstar on the planet. Only one more Taylor song to come.

Sabrina had a great 2023, she released the deluxe version of 'Emails I Can't Send' (which is where we find this track from), embarked on the tour for the album (I attended), supported BLACKPINK for their headlining show at Hyde Park (I also attended) and then ended the year by supporting Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour (I unfortunately did not attend). Seeing her twice was great fun, she puts on such a great show live and I would highly recommend anyone to go and see her. This isn't as good as the songs off the regular album but it's still a really good effort. It's one of the slower tracks and my favourites from her are usually the big unashamedly pop bangers. My only criticism would be that the irregular grammar in the line 'so you can reply, just to not me' just sounds awkward. (

It's not a cover of the earlier hit with a similar title from Selena Gomez but Bebe led her album campaign with the funky disco banger 'Heart Wants What It Wants'. This is so much better than the Guetta collabs that it makes it feel even worse that this flopped completely. It's one of her best vocal performances. Particularly in the first verse, there's a slight husk in her voice that isn't usually there that adds an extra dimension to the track. I forgot how good this one was to be honest, I wouldn't have begrudged it landing much higher.

At everyone's favourite position this year is Alessandra with the second appearance from Eurovision in this year's countdown. This was Norway's entry for the contest and was not originally a stand-out when I first heard the tracks. In fact, I only rated it 5th from it's semi-final and then 7th in the final but it came into a life of it's own after the contest and has grown to be the 3rd highest in this countdown. It feels a bit like Ava Max does Wellerman but a lot better than that makes it sound:lol: It's messy and all over the place but just completely goes off! It was brilliant to see this achieve a shock top 10 peak in the official charts too.

Welcome back to my EOY charts to Selena Gomez after she has had two years away. She came-back with 'Single Soon' in August and despite showing promising early signs that it may be a hit, fell away quickly after it just missed the top 20. I don't think it's anywhere near being her best, but it's still a catchy track in her regular style. Not surprising as this was a track originally meant for her last album, 'Rare' and was released now to tide us over until her 4th studio album is ready. The track is co-produced by her, now supposed. boyfriend Benny Blanco. It's not the kind of message you'd want to hear from your girlfriend, no? :lol:

'Queen Of Kings' was an instant standout at Eurovision for me and a very welcome surprise Top 10 hit afterwards - it switches from going hard to ethereal and back very quickly but she has the voice to pull it off.

This probably seems like Leah's most 'credible' song. She seems to think it's her rock track with the video showing her performing with a full band. This was a bit of a grower for me. Initially, I wasn't massively sold but I grew to appreciate the more serious vibes in contrast to the mostly straight pop she releases otherwise.

After a year away, not only were we treated to Olivia's sophomore album but we also received this folk ballad from the soundtrack to the latest Hunger Games movie. Folk isn't a sound we'd really heard from Olivia before but it might be one we hear more of in the future because it seems to work very well. Just like the track itself slowly builds into something great, it also took it's time growing in my estimations, falling out of the top 10 before climbing to it's peak of #6 in it's 4th week. It looks like it might have missed the boat on getting a top 10 official peak with the hype for the film dying down after Christmas.

EARTHGANG are back as independent artists after their Interscope contract ended and they marked the occasion by releasing their 'RIP Human Art' EP. This EP birthed 'Die Today' which has become the biggest solo hit of theirs in my chart. The chorus is absolutely massive and Doctur Dot & Johnny Venus both kill it in their verses. The brilliant video shows them at their funeral (with Denzel Curry being the officiant of the service with a funny rant) and doctored images of the world in mourning as their death makes them the biggest stars in the world. It's playing on the same concept as J. Cole's verse in 'All My Life'. Give the actor who plays a construction worker who looks dismayed taking down the 'Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard' street sign to replace it with the 'Earthgang Avenue' his Oscar for the funniest acting I've seen in years.

More from The Good Witch now and this is just the kind of song that she's mastered. Maisie has one of the most underrated pen games in pop. She has a brilliant ability to always come up with some intelligent and legitimately witty lines that makes each song sing. We hear a lot of 'uplifting and empowering' pop tracks nowadays but they rarely have the depth as this.

Welcome back to my EOY charts to Zara Larsson who last made a (triple) appearance 7 years ago. It wasn't looking promising for this one last January as it left my charts just as quickly as it came but, as it started to gain some traction in the official charts, it's got a second wind in mine bagging itself a new #7 peak. 'La Di Da' by Everglow was one of my favourite tracks of 2020 and this feels like a western adaptation of it; just like when Hollywood remade 'Ghost In The Shell' or 'Oldboy'. But Zara brings enough new to make it a worthwhile listen. Unfortunately, the follow-ups have not been able to retain my interest.

We have our first foreign language track in the top 100 and it's the Spanish collaboration between Mexican duo Sofía Reyes and Danna Paola. The original was already gaining traction with me before the remix with Kim Petras exploded it into my charts. I've like both versions but I probably have listened to the Kim remix more so I'll link that despite the original having a nice little video. Even with the remix, it's a short track (2 and a half minutes) and I'd have loved if there was an extra verse here but it wasn't to be. How satisfying is it that Kim Petras now only has #61, #62 and #63 songs in my EOY charts, all over the past 3 years. It's not going to last long as she has 3 more songs to come in a banner year for her.

Chlöe killed it with her debut single 'Have Mercy' and she has struggled to reach the highs of that effort again but I think 'Body Do' is the closest she's got. One of the most up-tempo tracks from her debut album, she's made the topic of having a man that she can't trust into a danceable bop. It's slight and nowhere near the brashness or the hit potential as her debut but it's the sound that suits her best compared to the ballads.

TWICE bagged their 2nd hit in my charts with their 2nd ever English language release 'MOONLIGHT SUNRISE'. While 'The Feels' was pure bubblegum-pop, this shows a nice maturity with a more grown-up sound that has lost none of the catchiness. A really interesting beat on this one too, a lot less in-your-face than the stereotypical K-Pop hit. Wikipedia describes it as 'Miami Bass' and I'm not sure I'd go that far but it's definitely pulling from some different influences. Despite them being one of the biggest names in their genre, I don't really know much of TWICE's work outside of these two English hits. I might need to check them out more in 2024.

Wastky reteamed with 'Feed The Biirds' vocalist Camila Recchio who previously worked with him on the #1 hit in my chart 'Tiny Glowing Screens Part 3'. The song basically has the message that the next generation will be better than the current and plays on the stereotypes that people say that issues (such as global warming) won't effect them so it's the problems of people in the future. But it's the not the lyrics I go back to this song for. It's the vibe. After so many years of working together, the duo have great chemistry and it pays off. It's probably not a great time to be recreating P Diddy music videos that the 'Puff and Mace' fisheye lens scene with the tracksuits is still very fun.

I'm not going to lie, I had kinda forgotten about this one as the year went on. It's a little more chilled out than her other songs and maybe that's been to it's detriment when it comes to being memorable but it just bops away so nicely when you listen to it. It's a great song for chilling on a beach in the summer. I do wish Hailee would stop teasing us with this 1-song-a-year release cycle. She's honestly one of my favourite actors around and I do prefer that side of her career to her music, so I'd rather she just commit to that fully or do a proper album campaign. The last 2 singles feel cohesive with the Californian theme and that they should be part of the same project but I fear we're going to be left frustrated and never see it.
