December 13, 20231 yr Roba and Steve, the David Bowie/Bing Crosby song is from 1977, the same year Bing died, so you'll need to redo your top 5s. I’ve edited mine.
December 14, 20231 yr I've avoided being controversial as it's never mentioned as a christmas song, but Bucks Fizz Land Of Make Believe would be number 2 - my argument: it was released before xmas, xmas trees and icebergs in video, chimes and xmas instruments on record (bar sleigh bells) and it's about a "Land Of Make Believe". Same with Madonna Dear Jessie (even quotes the land of make believe) which would be at 3 behind Bucks Fizz, and Freiheit, Keeping The Dream Alive, totally a Xmas-sounding record without ever mentioning it. (see Spice Girls, East 17, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, there due to videos). All hits at christmas though and I associate them all with xmas. just missed: Abba (Happy New Year) - Hi Alex, what no Abba!, But can I vote for ABBA song here ? I always associate Bucks Fizz song with Xmas due to video too and have the same feelings about Steps - Heartbeat and Girls Aloud - See The Day. + added Madonna "Santa Baby" (I removed her and Kylie's versions from all-time list, when Ivana Raymonda Van Der Veen released her cover of this hit) Edited December 14, 20231 yr by Last Dreamer
December 14, 20231 yr I’m sure plenty felt xmasy in December 1982 - was that not the December of the big snowfall?
December 14, 20231 yr +5 Roy Wood - Sing Out the Old... Bring in the New +4 The Pretenders - 2000 Miles +3 The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping +2 David Essex - A Winter's Tale +1 Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry No room for Band Aid or Queen
December 15, 20231 yr But can I vote for ABBA song here ? I always associate Bucks Fizz song with Xmas due to video too and have the same feelings about Steps - Heartbeat and Girls Aloud - See The Day. + added Madonna "Santa Baby" (I removed her and Kylie's versions from all-time list, when Ivana Raymonda Van Der Veen released her cover of this hit) I think the Rules included New Years records as part of the Xmas season, and you can't get more iconic than Abba's Happy New Year - I just didn't have space for it in my list
December 15, 20231 yr +5 Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone +4 The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping +3 Wham! - Last Christmas +2 David Essex - A Winter's Tale +1 Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
December 15, 20231 yr 5 Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry 4 Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York 3 Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping 2 David Essex - A Winter’s Tale 1 Chris Rea - Driving Home For Christmas So much I couldn’t fit in and I prefer Wham! with 0 points to Mariah with 3 points in the 90s. December 18, 20231 yr Author All counted up so will get the results out there this evening, you voted for 26 different songs so let's start with the six that didn't make the top 20: =24th place - 1 point Dave Edmunds - Run Run Rudolph Kathryn Jones - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation "Weird Al" Yankovic - Christmas at Ground Zero =21st place - 2 points Aled Jones - Walking in the Air Hall & Oates - Jingle Bell Rock Madonna - Santa Baby Aled Jones out in a lowly 21st - it's a song I have very fond memories of as I love the Snowman but sadly even I couldn't find room for it. Madonna also out in the first batch, albeit she's not exactly renowned for her christmas songs!
December 18, 20231 yr Author =19th place - 3 points ABBA - Happy New Year Hybrid Kids - We Three Kings =17th place - 4 points Cliff Richard - Mistletoe and Wine Twiggy - Winter Wonderland Cliff's festive classic bows out in 17th, the biggest casualty of the round so far as only the top 10 qualify for the grand final. Buzzjack faves ABBA also out, but again they're not really known for christmas music.
December 18, 20231 yr Author =12th - 5 points All About Eve - December Anne Charleston & Ian Smith - Old Fashioned Christmas Band Aid II - Do They Know It's Christmas? Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus is Coming to Town Roy Wood - Sing Out The Old... Bring In The New Four of these only picked up one voter, but sadly that does mean four people's favourite doesn't make it through. Bruce was the one that secured multiple votes. And is that Anne Charleston & Ian Smith as in Madge and Harold from Neighbours?!!! ICONIC!!! Fortunately we have a solitary song in 11th so there is a clear top 10... but which song will just miss out? :o
December 18, 20231 yr Author 11th - 7 points Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? :o :o :o Well consider me crackered as I didn't see that one not making it through. Probably the most famous christmas song in history bows out in 11th.
December 18, 20231 yr Author 10th - 8 points Queen - Thank God It's Christmas 9th - 10 points David Essex - A Winter's Tale Queen are the act that scrape through ahead of Band Aid, with David Essex a couple of points ahead - the latter in particular is a pleasant surprise for me.
December 18, 20231 yr Author 8th - 13 points Frankie Goes to Hollywood - The Power of Love 7th - 17 points Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry The totals are starting to creep up now. Frankie can relax as they're safely through, together with Jona Lewie who picked up a huge nine votes, just most of them 1 or 2 points.
December 18, 20231 yr 11th - 7 points Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? :o :o :o Well consider me crackered as I didn't see that one not making it through. Probably the most famous christmas song in history bows out in 11th.
December 18, 20231 yr Author =5th - 18 points Pretenders - 2000 Miles Wham! - Last Christmas The UK's current #1 makes it to 5th, which suggests it may not prove quite as popular on buzzjack as it does in the charts. The lovely 2000 Miles from the Pretenders joins George and Andrew in the top 5.
December 18, 20231 yr Author 4th - 19 points Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone 3rd - 21 points Chris Rea - Driving Home for Christmas A contrasting pair up next with Shaky's feel good festive bop deservedly finishing top 5, whilst the slightly more croony yet ever popular Chris Rea motors into the top 3.
December 18, 20231 yr Author 2nd - 36 points The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping Storming in to second with an impressive 36 points haul is Christmas Wrapping, ridiculous that this has still never made the top 40... but at least it will make the top 40 here in the final! All of which means your winner, and by some distance, is of course... 1st - 55 points The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York It was never in doubt really as this led practically from the off. Finishing 19 points ahead of 2nd and 33 points ahead of the third placed track, the Pogues and Kirsty top our 80s list. RIP both but your festive joy remains ^_^ j9jbdgZidu8
