Welcome to the 2023 Chart of the Year thread! From 2pm tomorrow, Radio 1 will be counting down the top 100 songs of the year, with the #1 song of the year revealed just before 6pm. Every song will have a chart post to accompany it, as with the usual Radio 1 chart show.

I know YTD estimates have been posted across the forum, but for those who haven't been following, please could we have our usual rule of NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

Join us on Buzzjack from 12pm as we play hits from 2023 that have missed out. CLICK HERE TO LISTEN! (link to come) This should only last about 90 mins so we've all got a break before the main show.

The following 40 posts are going to be placeholder posts for this week's official top 40, in lieu of the usual chart show. When info is revealed, I'll edit the posts in. There are 40 of them to do though so please bear with when the time comes!

In the meantime, feel free to speculate and hype!

Biography

Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 – April 14, 1995) was an American musician, actor, and author with a career that spanned more than six decades.

Ives began his career as an itinerant singer and guitarist, eventually launching his own radio show, The Wayfaring Stranger, which popularized traditional folk songs. In 1942, he appeared in Irving Berlin's This Is the Army and became a major star of CBS Radio. In the 1960s, he successfully crossed over into country music, recording hits such as "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Funny Way of Laughin'". Ives was also a popular film actor through the late 1940s and '50s. His film roles included parts in So Dear to My Heart (1948) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), as well as the role of Rufus Hannassey in The Big Country (1958), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Ives is often associated with the Christmas season. He did voice-over work as Sam the Snowman, narrator of the classic 1964 Christmas television special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Ives also worked on the special's soundtrack, including the songs "A Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", both of which continue to chart annually on the Billboard holiday charts into the 2020s. - Wikipedia

Biography

Born in Hoboken, NJ, in 1915, Francis Albert Sinatra exercised an almost unparalleled sway on 20th-century popular music. Before there was Elvis or Madonna, he mastered the art of morphing his persona and his music, and in the process remained an iconic force for five decades. From 1942 (when he went solo after stints with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey) until his death in 1998, Sinatra adapted his approach to changing tastes yet always interpreted every song he tackled with phrasing that personalized and enhanced the meaning of the lyrics. His early, vulnerable crooning style elevated him to superstardom, arguably turning him into the first teen idol, with screaming bobby-soxers hanging on his every romantic turn of phrase, mixing tenderness and feminine vulnerability. He made the most of the post-WWII years by radiating a rugged insouciance—filling out his once-slender frame, using booze as a stage prop, and heightening his sexuality—that resonated with a newly affluent audience. By 1953 he completed the first of several reinventions, trading in youthful silkiness for introspection, an ambivalent delivery that afforded different interpretations to different listeners, and a darker timbre on a series of albums made with arranger Nelson Riddle. Toggling between celebrating urbane hedonism, rhapsodizing romantic desire, and meditating on loneliness, he exploited the new LP format—and pioneered the concept album with In the Wee Small Hours in 1955. In 1960 he launched his own label, Reprise, and began projecting a high-roller image aligned with Las Vegas high life. Even as he cut back on recording in the 1970s, he still scored hits such as the nostalgic “Theme from New York, New York” in 1980, and his influence remains profound, whether in the music of a disciple like Michael Bublé or in the business acumen of JAY Z. - Apple Music

Biography

Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby Jr. (/ˈkrɑːzbi/; May 3, 1903 – October 14, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Crosby's trademark warm bass-baritone voice made him the best-selling recording artist of the 20th century, having sold over one billion records, tapes, compact discs and digital downloads around the world.

The first multimedia star, from 1931 to 1954 Crosby was a leader in record sales, radio ratings, and motion picture grosses. His early career coincided with technical recording innovations such as the microphone. This allowed him to develop a laid-back, intimate singing style that influenced many of the popular male singers who followed him, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, and Dean Martin. Yank magazine said that he was the person who had done the most for American soldiers' morale during World War II. In 1948, American polls declared him the "most admired man alive", ahead of Jackie Robinson and Pope Pius XII. Also in 1948, Music Digest estimated that his recordings filled more than half of the 80,000 weekly hours allocated to recorded radio music.

Crosby won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Father Chuck O'Malley in the 1944 motion picture Going My Way and was nominated for his reprise of the role in The Bells of St. Mary's opposite Ingrid Bergman the next year, becoming the first of six actors to be nominated twice for playing the same character. In 1963, Crosby received the first Grammy Global Achievement Award. He is one of 33 people to have three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in the categories of motion pictures, radio, and audio recording.

Crosby influenced the development of the postwar recording industry. After seeing a demonstration of an early Ampex reel-to-reel tape recorder he placed a large order for their equipment and convinced ABC to allow him to tape his shows. He became the first performer to pre-record his radio shows and master his commercial recordings onto magnetic tape. Through the medium of recording, he constructed his radio programs with the same directorial tools and craftsmanship (editing, retaking, rehearsal, time shifting) used in motion picture production, a practice that became an industry standard. In addition to his work with early audio tape recording, he helped to finance the development of videotape, bought television stations, bred racehorses, and co-owned the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. - Wikipedia

Biography

Coldplay are a British rock band formed in London in 1996. Vocalist, rhythm guitarist and pianist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion met at University College London and began playing music together from 1996 to 1998, first calling themselves Pectoralz and then Starfish before finally changing their name to Coldplay. Their creative director and former manager Phil Harvey is often referred to as the fifth member by the band.

After changing their name to Coldplay, the band recorded and released two EPs: Safety in 1998 and The Blue Room in 1999. The latter was their first release on a major record label, after signing to Parlophone. Coldplay achieved worldwide fame with the release of the song "Yellow" in 2000, followed in the same year by their debut album Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was released to critical acclaim. Their next release, X&Y, was the best-selling album worldwide of 2005. Their Brian Eno-produced fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), the best-selling album worldwide of 2008, earned three Grammy Awards. In 2011, Coldplay released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which topped the charts in over 34 countries and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011. The band have since released Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015) and Everyday Life (2019).

Coldplay have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. They have won numerous awards throughout their career, including nine Brit Awards, seven MTV Video Music Awards, seven MTV Europe Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 29 nominations. The band's first three albums—Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), and X&Y (2005)—are among the best-selling albums in UK chart history. In December 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the fourth-best artist of the 2000s, and Q magazine included the group in their Artists Of The Century list.

Coldplay have supported various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. They have also performed at charity projects, including Band Aid 20, Live 8, Global Citizen Festival, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, One Love Manchester, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Sport Relief and the UK Teenage Cancer Trust. - Wikipedia

Biography

The Jackson 5’s exuberant bubblegum soul was forged in the hardscrabble town of Gary, IN, fomented by a father who had sublimated his own musical dreams. One night in the early ’60s, Joe Jackson discovered that his sons Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine had been fiddling around with his guitar. Initially furious, he quickly recognized their innate talent, and the three brothers began performing together; younger siblings Marlon and Michael joined a few years later. By mid-decade, the family act was gaining fame locally and winning talent shows—most notably at New York’s Apollo Theater in 1967. They signed to Motown Records in 1968 and moved to Los Angeles, where the songwriting conglomeration The Corporation began feeding them songs. Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 dropped in late 1969, and the single “I Want You Back” was a mad burst of joy from its first bass-driven, jangling notes. It was the first in an unprecedented stream of four No. 1 hits in less than a year. The Jackson 5 attained incredible crossover success, bolstered by an innovative marketing campaign that included Saturday-morning cartoons, coloring books, and even a board game. Later albums couldn’t—and didn’t—match that initial flash of brilliance, but the act had become a cornerstone of pop music. Motown never allowed the brothers to write songs or play instruments—a massive mistake in light of the undeniable charm (and success) of their self-made 1978 outing for Epic (as The Jacksons), Destiny. As Michael’s solo fame skyrocketed in the early ’80s, his star power helped turn the 1984 album Victory and its accompanying tour into blockbuster events. The siblings released one more album, 1989’s 2300 Jackson Street, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. - Apple Music

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music

Biography

Slade are an English rock band formed in Wolverhampton in 1966. They rose to prominence during the glam rock era in the early 1970s, achieving 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart. The British Hit Singles & Albums names them the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to have three singles enter the charts at number one; all six of the band's chart-toppers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. As of 2006, total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", has sold in excess of one million copies. According to the 1999 BBC documentary It's Slade, the band have sold over 50 million records worldwide. Following an unsuccessful move to the U.S. in 1975, Slade's popularity in the UK waned, but was unexpectedly revived in 1980 when they were last-minute replacements for Ozzy Osbourne at the Reading Rock Festival. The band later acknowledged this to have been one of the highlights of their career. The original line-up split in 1992, but reformed later in the year as Slade II. The band have continued, with a number of line-up changes, to the present day. They have also shortened the group name back to Slade. A number of artists from diverse genres have cited Slade as an influence, including Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Undertones, The Runaways, The Clash, Kiss, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, The Replacements, Cheap Trick, Oasis, Quiet Riot (who covered Slade songs for two of their three biggest hits) and Britny Fox. The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Music tells of Holder's powerful vocals, guitarist Dave Hill's equally arresting dress sense, and the deliberate misspelling of their song titles (such as "Cum On Feel the Noize" and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now") for which they became well known. - Wikipedia

Biography

Amazingly, Darlene Love, a superb vocalist, hasn't had much of a track record as a solo singer, at least not in terms of hits. Love was a founding member of the Blossoms in 1957. They did several sessions and were resident singers on the television show Shindig. Love sang lead vocals on "He's a Rebel," which was credited to the Crystals, and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," which was issued under the name Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans. She cut six singles for Spector's Phillies label, with "Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Back Home" the most successful. Love became busy as an actress, but reunited with Spector for the 1977 single "Lord, If You're a Woman." Love appeared in all four Lethal Weapon films, and was also in the Royal Shakespeare Company's co-production of Stephen King's Carrie. Her 1990 LP, Paint Another Picture, failed to chart in America. Love later toured as a background vocalist with Cher. She appeared briefly on the soap opera Another World in 1993 and later went on to appear as Motormouth Maybelle in the Broadway production of Hairspray. In October 2007, Love released It's Christmas, Of Course, a collection of holiday songs. Three years later, she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2015, Love returned with the Steven Van Zandt-produced, Introducing Darlene Love, which featured songs by Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Perry, Joan Jett, and others. - Spotify

Biography

It didn’t take long for Michael Bublé to start getting the Sinatra comparisons. And in some ways, they made sense: Like Sinatra, Bublé was an old-fashioned entertainer, the kind of singer who weighed his success in part by how well he connected with the crowd. But where Sinatra exuded swagger and masculinity, Bublé was soft and humble, a fisherman’s son from British Columbia who could swing if he wanted but tended more toward ballads and delicate adult-contemporary pop. Did the ladies love him? Of course! He’s Michael Bublé. He might be carrying a torch, but he’s lighting his own way.

Born in 1975 in Burnaby, just east of Vancouver, Bublé fell in love with jazz and standards after being turned on by his grandfather, an Italian-born plumber who later offered his services to clubs to fix their pipes in exchange for putting a teenage Bublé onstage. As his star grew, his range broadened, balancing straight takes on classics like “Stardust” and “All of Me” with polished contemporary pop (“Home,” “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and “Nobody But Me”), creating a sound that was immediate, romantic, elevated but accessible. And like his heroes (not just Sinatra, but Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and a generation of American entertainers), Bublé got his Christmas album (2011’s Christmas) and a string of TV specials (buble!). In 2013, he gave an impromptu a cappella performance in the New York City subway. That, he said, is when you know you’ve made it. A stretch, but if his voice doesn’t get you, his charm will. - Apple Music

Biography

With a voice that galvanized Britain and a talent for imbuing ballads and bangers with emotion and power, Leona Lewis is one of the 21st century’s leading soul-pop singers. Born in London in 1985, she attended the prestigious BRIT School during her teens, eventually leaving the performing-arts institution to pursue music on her own terms. That led her to the third season of The X Factor, where her passionate audition version of "Over the Rainbow" invigorated the audience and the judges, jump-starting a run on the show that ended with her winning a record deal. Lewis' strong soprano was an ideal fit for the swaying soul/R&B that dominated radio in the mid-'00s, and her luminous 2007 single "Bleeding Love" topped the charts in 35 countries. Since then, in addition to acting, modeling, and animal-rights activism, she's appeared all over the musical spectrum: Belting the theme for James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar in 2009, collaborating with Swedish electronic-music powerhouse Avicii on the thumping "Collide" in 2011, and duetting with Cuban-American superstar Pitbull on the fiery "Amore'' in 2018. Given her ability to cross genres, styles, and art forms, you can bet on seeing Lewis shine for years to come, however she sees fit. - Apple Music

Biography

Sometime around the end of 2010, Sia Furler hit bottom. She was exhausted, numb, self-medicating. She’d had some success, but the trade-off—touring, promotion, life without privacy—felt too steep. She thought about suicide. Then an idea came along: Why put so much of herself on the line when she could just try writing for someone else? Even after coming back to the stage as a solo artist, Furler maintained a degree of playful detachment: The big wigs, the reluctance to show her face. But the music was real, empathetic, even heroic—anthems of vulnerability and self-empowerment that handled huge feelings with a lightness that made it seem like she was dancing slightly above the ground. Pop songs are fantasies, she seemed to say. But they also get us through.

Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1975, Furler started out singing in a local acid-jazz band called Crisp before moving to London, joining the trip-hop group Zero 7 while starting a solo career. Her early albums—off-kilter pop with hints of folk, electronica and jazz—did fine, but it wasn’t until she started writing for other artists that her career took off. Beyoncé (“Pretty Hurts”), Britney Spears (“Perfume”), Katy Perry (“Double Rainbow“), Rihanna (“Diamonds”): Furler’s writing made for some of the most bright-lined, all-caps pop of the 2010s, while her own tracks (“Chandelier”, “The Greatest”, “Alive”, “Unstoppable”) set new standards for playacting in pop performance, making her—a queer woman whose self-professed higher power is a surfing, Santa Claus-like figure called Whatever Dude—not just a songwriter, but also a kind of oddball role model for anyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in. She said a producer once claimed that it wasn’t fair for her to be able to turn out a song in 20 minutes and get the royalty split she did. Maybe so, Furler clapped back—but getting to those 20 minutes took her 15 years. - Apple Music

Biography

“I still wanna be one of the greats,“ rapper Jack Harlow tells Apple Music about his commitment to his craft. “I’m very ambitious about this. And I think I have what it takes to really make a mark because I love the art.” Harlow, born in 1998 in Kentucky, is well on his way to turning that dream into reality. Growing up in Louisville, Harlow started writing and rapping at the age of 12 and released his bouncy first EP before graduating from school in late 2015. Since his more fully realised mixtape, 18, dropped in 2016, Harlow has continued to inject his chill party rap and poppy beats with “addictive, candy-coated qualities,” as he described it to Apple Music. “It’s good on the ears.” With 2017’s Gazebo, he established a more mature sound, moodily riding through his hometown with the intense “Dark Knight” and keeping things dreamy using synth pulses on the regret-laden “Wasted Youth”. It’s a vibe he honed on multiple mixtapes in the late 2010s, keeping with a feel he says is representative of Louisville—smooth and laidback—while exploring elements of trap, which is native to his adopted home base of Atlanta. With every beat on 2020’s punchy, swaggering Sweet Action, Harlow moved closer to the place he sees as his inevitable destination: “On top.” - Apple Music

Biography

Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Laufey brings a jazz-influenced, traditional pop style into the 21st century with soothing songs inspired by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Chet Baker. Like a younger sibling to more contemporary acts like Norah Jones and Fiona Apple, the Icelandic-Chinese musician made her official debut in the early 2020s with her viral hit "Street by Street," which was popular on social media platforms and caught the attention of famous fans Billie Eilish and Willow Smith. Laufey's debut EP, Typical of Me, arrived in April 2021. She later expanded upon that with her official first album, 2022's Everything I Know About Love, which reached the Top 20 in her native Iceland. Featuring collaborations with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the sophisticated, Grammy-nominated Bewitched followed in 2023 and took her into Iceland's Top Five while charting internationally, including a Top 30 placement on the Billboard 200. - Apple Music

Biography

Eccentric pop genius Ulysses Adrian "Roy" Wood developed the Electric Light Orchestra out of the Move, a truly great British band in an era of great British bands. However, because of a rift with Jeff Lynne, Wood left ELO after the debut No Answer and created Wizzard, a bizarre octet who debuted at a 1972 Wembley Rock 'n' Roll Festival and then captured the airwaves with "Ball Park Incident." Wizzard landed two chart-toppers overseas, "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers." Chaotic but always melodic, Wood built a unique wall of sound around these and other dandies like "Rock and Roll Winter" and perennial winner "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day." Wizzard even jabbed the ascending ELO with "Bend Over Beethoven."

In the center of this insanity, Wood sported multi-colored beard and mane, added a star to his forehead, and covered his face (perhaps inspiring fan Paul Stanley) with warpaint, sprinkles, or innumerable other oddities. Wizzard seemed to only maintain success with singles however, and the Introducing Eddie and the Falcons LP, a tribute to early rock icons like Del Shannon, Gene Vincent, and Cliff Richard, proved to be Wizzard's final work. Manager Don Arden enjoyed stadium success in the U.S., but Wizzard folded when management decided not to increase financing. Wood kept bassist Rick Price and saxophonist Mike Burney for the Wizzo Band, whose jazz-funk wafted beyond commercial confines for a lone effort, Super Active Wizzo. Wizzo expired in 1978, Wood continuing his concurrent solo career and basically dropping out of sight, reappearing periodically to perform with disciples Cheap Trick. - Spotify

Biography

Kelly Clarkson

During her championship season on the first American Idol in 2002, Kelly Clarkson wowed judges and viewers in ways that countless contestants have emulated since but few ever repeated. But what’s most amazing about the Texan sweetheart’s Cinderella story is not how she earned that first burst of reality-TV glory but how she extended her 15 minutes to weather setbacks and forge a career as one of music’s best-loved performers. Clearly Clarkson’s power and versatility as a vocalist were equaled by her determination and resilience, qualities she displayed when she shifted away from pop ballads like her Idol signature song “A Moment Like This” toward spunkier declarations of autonomy like 2004’s “Since U Been Gone” and 2011’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Those hits proved Clarkson was just as happy rocking out as she was demonstrating her fervent love for pop, country, and R&B. They also showed how even major-league song doctors like Max Martin had to conform to Clarkson’s style and sensibility, not the other way around. Her eighth consecutive album to debut in the top three spots on the Billboard album charts, 2017’s Meaning of Life was her most confident and well-rounded statement to date. The single “Heat,” an irresistible gospel-house hit fueled by Clarkson’s unbeatable spirit and limitless energy, proved she could cut it as a club diva, too. - Apple Music

Ariana Grande

Armed with a mesmerizing, nimble soprano—and a vocal register often likened to Mariah Carey’s and Christina Aguilera’s—Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before transforming into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Instantly recognizable thanks to her signature ponytail, cat ears, babydoll dresses, and breezy self-confidence, her slyly sexual personal brand has, like that of the Spice Girls before her, become an iconic image of young female power. But Grande is more than a symbol: Over the course of several albums and scores of hit singles—beginning with 2013’s “The Way” (featuring Mac Miler) through The Weeknd-assisted “Love Me Harder” and “Break Free” (featuring Zedd)—she has consistently outshined her male collaborators and deftly parlayed her stardom into activism. An LGBTQ advocate and outspoken feminist (“I’m tired of living in a world where women are mostly referred to as a man’s past, present, or future PROPERTY,” she tweeted in 2016), she uses her platform to confront issues like misogyny, sexism, homophobia, and bullying, spreading a message of love over all. Nowhere was this more clear than in May 2017: After terrorists attacked her concert in Manchester, England, killing 22 and injuring hundreds, Grande continued her tour. "Perspective changes your life,” she told Beats 1’s Ebro Darden. "You want to stay in the moment and try not to give into fear, because obviously the whole point of finishing the tour was being there for my fans. You want to set the same example and keep going.” And that she did: Her Max Martin-produced smash “No Tears Left to Cry,” an escapist dance-floor triumph released a year after the attack, sends a message of hope and healing, with a dose of hear-me-roar attitude. - Apple Music
