So Sophie will probably need to be like top 20 on Spotify to chart there as she's got no airplay.

Top ten even considering the song is not appearing on AM chart at all. Mitski's hit has reached #2 on US Spotify but is yet to go higher than #26 on Hot 100.

They changed their rules a couple of years ago to allow freshly viral songs to chart on a case by case basis even outside the top 50 (Lil Baby's 'Freestyle' for example had a run on the chart in 2022, peaking at #59, and that was released in November 2017 - I don't remember the recurrent rule being specifically 3 years even before that though? but maybe I'm forgetting). I'm not sure they'd bother with this song though, not that it looks like it would chart at the moment even if it could.

the rule is that once you go to the catalog chart, you cannot come back unless it's straight into the top 40

It is/was top 50, not top 40. (And they definitely still assess even that on a case by case basis as you don't ever see songs go recurrent for a week or two then re-enter at #50 etc. - although songs that get kicked to recurrency by the Christmas surge have been allowed to make quick re-entries in the new year recently, SZA's 'Snooze' looks set to re-enter into the top 10 on next week's chart for example)
