Chocolate is quite good. You're right I can't quite put my finger on it but there is something quite engaging about it.

Great to hear it's up from here. I'm looking forward to X & Aphrodite. I'm really not sure what to expect with Kiss Me Once though.

Based on your views so far I think you have a few treats to look forward to on X and Aphrodite and your take on kiss me once will be interesting.

KMO has its fans but for me it's on a level with Body Language, a couple of decent songs and the rest just forgettable.

'Secret' really is the gem on that album for me, and of course 'Loving Days' is a big highlight

I guess objectively speaking the album does sound like a load of rough demos, but I have a bit of an attachment to most of the songs on it as it was the first era I'd followed since the very beginning as a "fan". 'I Feel For You' and 'Someday' (possibly the worst song she's ever recorded) are absolutely horrible though!

It's an album that might open well to been re recorded with all songs getting a more pop kylie makeover, for most of the songs it could do them no harm.

Thanks, X will be coming later today and I'm really looking forward to that one, Aphrodite too. I don't have high hopes for Kiss Me Once but we'll see how it goes. :)

Yes, that sums it up better than I did! :)

That's not a bad idea, this would be my pick so far for a re-record if she was to do one.

Is there anywhere where the b-sides from the Kylie Minogue to Body Language eras are easily accessible online? I'd be really keen to check them out. Also is there any that people would recommend I check out first?

Oooooh.

Made of Glass

BPM

Baby

Paper Dolls

Cruise Control

Tears

City Games

Tightrope (I know it's part of the album in some territories but I still consider it a B-side  )

Good Like That

Off the top of my head anyway. I think that's about most of them!

Thanks for the list! :)

Ooh I’m familiar with Made of Glass, radio use to play it in Australia for some reason. Not that they need one. Haha

I remember really liking it.

Here's a playlist of the Body Language b-sides and rejects on youtube:

I enjoy Soul On Fire (Slow b-side), Cruise Control -there's a version without the rap verse- (Red Blooded Woman b-side) and City Games (Chocolate b-side).

The b-sides mentioned above are superior though! Tightrope and Made of Glass especially!

Thanks indiekylie.

I'll be aiming to check all these out after my album listen throughs are finished. :)

I'm back at work on Monday so the frequency of the album reviews/thoughts might slow down a bit.

This has been a nice way to spend my last week and a half of sick leave though. :)

Oooooh.

Paper dolls is brill, think on lines of fragile and bittersweet goodbye. I've always preferred paper dolls to spinning around.

X (2007)

2007 cam and we have what would be our longest gap between Kylie Minogue albums. Released in November her tenth studio would fittingly be titled X. 2 Hearts would serve as the albums lead single and would become the second and final Kylie Minogue single I would purchase, though unlike On A Night Like This where I purchased the CD single I only ever got the download EP of 2 2 Hearts from the iTunes store. With that though 2 Hearts has fallen down in my affections over the last 16 years and I don’t really like it as much as I did back in 2007, it’s still a nice pop song but really not sure it should’ve launched the album. Like A Drug has a very nice chorus though the verses don’t quite click with me as much. Even though the song sounds very of it’s time it’s one I found myself enjoying as it progressed. How do you describe a feeling? Good question, one I don’t have an answer to sadly, what I can answer though is the question of whether or not I like In My Arms, the answer a resounding yes. I was surprised o see Calvin Harris was in the credits for this track but I can totally hear it now. Should this have been the lead single? I think potentially it should’ve been. Speakerphone is great and sounds like it would fit perfectly on Britney Spears 2007 album Blackout. Sensitized was ok but Heart Beat Rock just didn’t register with me at all unfortunately. I don’t really remember The One from it’s single release but I really like it, it’s different to In My Arms but in a good way. I wasn’t expecting No More Rain to be like that, but I really enjoyed it. This is turning into a really solid pop album.

I can vaguely remember All I See from early 2008 and upon listening to it I thought I was listening to a Jordin Speaks song, it sounds a little similar to Jordin’s single One Step At A Time, or should that be the other way around? Anyway I quite enjoy All I See. Stars was another very strong offering that had me thinking ‘why on earth did I not give this album a go in 2007-8 as it’s been consistently good. On to the second Australian single now in Wow and WOW this is infinitely better than 2 Hearts. How was this or In My Arms not the lead single? Loving Wow! Nu-di-ty to me sounds like something that was left over from Britney Spears recording session for Blackout, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this. I found Cosmic to be pleasant without really impressing me sadly. Magnetic Electric sounded really impressive and I can’t believe it was relegated to a Australian bonus track. White Diamond was a really nice way to close out the album, it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I always thought there was a different version of White Diamond for some reason though.

Wrapping up what was an extremely enjoyable album to listen to. I think they got most thing rights with this release, though I’m still not sold on 2 Hearts as a lead single when there were so many better options just sitting on the album.

Singles I liked: Wow, In My Arms, The One, All I See

Album Tracks I liked: Like A Drug, Speakerphone, No More Rain, Stars

X is probably the kylie album that I would say was the most messed up due to bad handling. The potential was there for a run of great singles if the right choices were made, but unfortunately 2hearts wasn't the right choice to lead the album especially when there was so many stronger options to pick from.

Likewise with the track listing, some excellent songs were left off in favour of much weaker ones.

The only thing I disagree with in your X review is when you say like a drug was of its time. I think it still sounds great to this very day, I still listen to this a lot to this very day and its one of my fave kylie tracks and I still think it should have been the 2nd single with The One been the lead.

Yeah, for me the X era is a bit marred by some of the single decisions and the fact so much good stuff was left off the album in favour of some absolute deadwood. I dare say there was potential for one of her very best albums if they'd made the right selections from all the material they had.

This was also a bonus track like 'Magnetic Electric' and it's an absolute monster which should've easily been on it:

I agree, x is her album that really should have been far bigger than it was. and it was annoying because they had so many great songs there but just made so many poor decisions. The album still did well but I think if better choices were made X would be triple platinum instead of double.
X (2007)

If you dipped into the unreleased singles like Magnetic Electric, Lose Control and Rippin' Up the Disco, you'd be shocked how good they are and wonder why they weren't included in the album.

Replace them with Hard Beat Rock, Nu-Di-ty & Cosmic and you would have had the greatest Kylie's pop album ever!
