Chart Track Commentary

 

50 Cent comes out ahead in the tussle at the top of this week’s Album Chart, with ‘Curtis’ outselling Kanye West’s ‘Graduation’ by a factor of nearly 3:2. For both artists it’s their third album, but 50 Cent’s previous album ‘The Massacre’ debuted at No1 in March 2005 whereas Kanye West’s previous album ‘Late Registration’ debuted at No2 later the same year.

 

Paddy Casey and Josh Ritter complete the quartet of new entries at the top of the Album Chart, with ‘Addicted To Company Part 1’ at No3 ahead of ‘The Historical Conquests Of Josh Ritter’ at No4. This is Paddy Casey’s first album release for four years, and follows ‘Living’ which debuted at No2 in October 2003 and finally reached No1 in March the following year. ‘Historical Conquests’ is Josh Ritter’s third Top 5 album in Ireland, following 2003’s ‘Hello Starling’ which debuted at No2 and 2006’s ‘The Animal Years’ which came in at No3.

 

Sean Kingston makes it three weeks in a row at the top of the Singles Chart with ‘Beautiful Girls’, ahead of Plain White T’s ‘Hey There Delilah’ in all three weeks. Luciano Pavarotti’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ is this week’s fifth best-selling download, and climbs from No32 to No7 on the overall Singles Chart – the only new entry in a steady Top 20 this week. Outside the Top 20, however, there’s a pack of new entries: Irish rugby anthem ‘Ireland’s Call’ is this week’s highest new entry at No23 for the Celtic Tenors, ahead of Akon’s ‘Sorry, Blame It On Me’ at No24, Booty Luv ‘Don’t Mess With My Man’ at No26 and Elvis Presley ‘Party’ at No27.

Blunt’s ‘Lost Souls’ Hits Top Spot

 

James Blunt debuts at No1 on this week’s Album Chart with his second album ‘All The Lost Souls’, his follow up to 2004’s ‘Back To Bedlam’ which was one the most successful debut albums ever, spending 14 weeks at No1, with an unbroken 12 month run in the Top 40.

 

50 Cent stays ahead of Kanye West – ‘Curtis’ drops to No2 and ‘Graduation’ slips to No3 – ahead of this week’s next new entry at No4 for Declan O’Rourke with his second album ‘Big Bad Beautiful World’. ‘Since Kyabram’ debuted at No5 nearly three years ago and went on to reach double platinum status in Ireland. Co. Monaghan four-piece The Flaws have the only other new entry in this week’s Top 20, coming in at No18 with their debut album ‘Achieving Vagueness’.

Chart Track Commentary

 

Shayne Ward debuts at No1 on this week’s Singles Chart with ‘If That’s OK With You’ – only the second single to do so this year, following Brian McFadden’s ‘Like Only A Woman Can’ which entered at No1 back in April.

 

The CD single is a AA-side, and downloads of the second track ‘No U Hang Up’ give Shayne a second new entry at No14. It’s a dramatic return to form for the 2005 X-Factor winner, whose first two singles ‘That’s My Goal’ and ‘No Promises’ both made No1, but ‘Stand By Me’ stalled at No9. To cap a great week, Shayne’s ‘If That’s OK With You’ has sold more copies over 7 days than any other single so far this year.

 

James Blunt’s All The Lost Souls’ has a second week at No1 on this week’s Album Chart, challenged by Foo Fighters whose 6th studio album ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ debuts at No2. Of the previous five, only ‘One By One’ fared better, coming in at No1 in 2002, although 2005’s ‘In Your Honour’ also debuted at No2.

Ian Brown has the next new entry at No7 with ‘The World Is Yours’, his 5th solo album and third to make the Top10. PJ Harvey has the third and final Top 20 new entry with ‘White Chalk’ at No15, behind the No10 debut for 2004’s ‘Uh Huh Her’, but ahead of the No17 debut for 2002’s ‘Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea’.

Bruce Springsteen debuts at No1 on the Album Chart this week with ‘Magic’ – his third Irish chart-topper in 2 years, following in the steps of ‘Devils & Dust’ and ‘Live In Dublin’. ‘Magic’ is the second fastest-selling album of the year so far in Ireland, outpaced only by Arctic Monkeys ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ back in April.

 

James Blunt’s ‘All The Lost Souls’ dips to No2 after a fortnight on top, still ahead of Foo Fighters ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’, down from No2 to No3. In a good week for ‘60s chart veterans, The Bee Gees and Bob Dylan complete the trio of new entries in the Top 5 with career retrospective compilations ‘Greatest’ and ‘Dylan’ at No4 and No5 respectively – outperforming their juniors Katie Melua and Babyshambles, who debut outside the Top 10 (‘Pictures’ at No13 and ‘Shotter’s Nation’ at No19).

 

Shayne Ward takes a comfortable second week at No1 on this week’s Singles Chart with ‘If That’s OK With You’, ahead of Plain White T’s ‘Hey There Delilah’ which climbs back to No2 and remains the No1 download for a seventh week. Bruce Springsteen has a second week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Magic’, but there’s a strong challenge from Michael Bublé who re-enters the chart at No2 with the new release of the ‘Tour Edition’ 2CD pack of ‘Call Me Irresponsible’. This is an Irish chart personal best for Bublé, ahead of the No4 peak for the original version of ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ (April 07) and the No5 peak for ‘It’s Time’ (March 05).

Aslan have this week’s highest new entry at No8 with ‘For Some Strange Reason’, their long-awaited follow-up to ‘Waiting For This Madness To End’ which spent 2 weeks at No1 in 2001. Sugababes have the next new entry at No11 with their fifth studio album ‘Change’, behind the No8 debut for their last studio album ‘Taller In More Ways’, but ahead of the No12 debut for last year’s ‘Singles Collection’.

 

It’s a quiet week on the Singles Chart, with Shayne Ward taking a third week at No1 with ‘If That’s OK With You’ leading a re-shuffled Top 10. Sugababes climb from No5 to No2 with ‘About You Now’, leapfrogging Plain White T’s ‘Hey There Delilah’ in both the Download Chart and the overall Singles Chart. This week’s highest new entry comes in at No23 for ‘A Big Hunk O’ Love’ – the 9th in the recent weekly series of Elvis re-issues, all of which have debuted between No23 and No27 except the first in the series ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ which debuted at No19.

After debuting at No1 on the Singles Chart four weeks ago, Shayne Ward continues his run at the top this week with ‘If That’s OK With You’, denying Sugababes a second Irish No1 single (after 2005’s ‘Push The Button’). ‘About You Now’ joins three other Sugababes singles which peaked at No2: ‘Freak Like Me’, ‘Round Round’ and ‘Hole In The Head’.

 

Mark Ronson & Amy Winehouse leap from No11 to No3 with the CD and vinyl release of ‘Valerie’, the first time either artist has appeared on the Irish Singles Chart Top 10 despite massive success on the Album Chart. Proving that there’s no such thing as bad publicity, Britney Spears has this week’s highest new entry at No9 with downloads of ‘Gimme More’, the lead track from her upcoming fifth studio album ‘Blackout’.

 

Bruce Springsteen makes it three weeks at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Magic’, matching ‘Devils and Dust’ which spent three weeks at the top in April 2005. Matchbox Twenty have the next new entry at No9 with their greatest hits collection ‘Exile On Mainstream’ – all three of their studio albums have made the Top 20, but none have breached the Top 10. Stereophonics have the third and final Top 20 new entry with their sixth studio album ‘Pull The Pin’, a disappointing start compared with their three previous albums which all debuted at No1.

Chart Track Commentary

 

This week’s Singles Chart sees three big pop players vying for the No 1 spot with Leona Lewis taking the top prize. Ten months since the release of her debut single and her X-Factor victory she releases her second single ‘Bleeding Love’, which like ‘A Moment Like This’ heads straight to the top of the chart. Britney Spears ‘Gimme More’ climbs from No 9 to No 2 surpassing the success of her last hit single in 2005 – ‘Do Somethin’- which reached No 4.

 

Take That hit the No 3 slot with their new release – ‘Rule The World’ – written for the soundtrack of the film Stardust - while Shayne Ward slips from last week’s No1 to this week’s No4. McFly show some consistency as their new single ‘The Heart Never Lies’ enters the Top 20 at No16 – the same position as their last single ‘Baby’s Coming Back’ entered the Chart back in May.

 

Bruce Springsteen holds on at the top of the Album Chart this week as ‘Magic’ takes a fourth week at No1 with Michael Bublé’s ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ also holding firm at No2. Van Morrison claims this week’s highest new entry with his latest greatest hits package ‘Still On Top’ which enters the Chart at No3. Amy Winehouse continues her climb back up the chart as ‘Back To Black’ skips up a place from No5 to No4 while Daniel O’Donnell & Mary Duff collaborate to get a Top Ten entry this week as ‘Together Again’ enters at No9.

Another week and another former no 1 returns to the singles chart. This time it's the Saw Doctors whose 1990 chart topper I Useta Lover has been re-issued as the official single for RTE's People In Need telethon which was held last Friday! First time around it took them 5 weeks to reach no 7, and a further 3 to get to the very top. The original Top 30 chart run for the single........

One interesting thing is that last time the 2 formats available were 7" and cassette, this time its CD and download. And further proof that the Irish are more flexible about what is eligible to chart - the CD contains 5 tracks plus a video. The tracks are I Useta Lover (original), Joyce Country Ceili Band, Stars over Cloughanover, Out for a smoke, I Useta Lover - live version from Campbell's Tavern, Cloughanover, Feb 2007. The video is the original performance from the Late Late Show which would have been broadcast on the day it went to no 1.

This week’s Album Chart sees a change at the top as Britney Spears achieves her first ever Irish No1 for a studio album with her fifth such release ‘Blackout’ going straight in at the top. 2000’s ‘Oops I Did It Again’ and 2001’s ‘Britney’ both peaked at No3 in the Chart while 1999’s ‘Baby One More Time’ made it to No6 and 2003’s ‘In The Zone’ reached No4. Her 2005 Greatest Hits package ‘My Prerogative’ did however take the No1 spot.

Bruce Springsteen drops a place to No2 after a reign of four weeks at the top with ‘Magic’ while Michael Bublé’s ‘Call Me Irresponsible’ also drops a place from No2 to No3. The Album Top Ten sees three more new entries this week: The Eagles ‘Long Road Out Of Eden’ (their first full studio album for 28 years) enters at No4, Whitney Houston’s ‘Ultimate Collection’ enters the Chart at No6, and the new collaboration between Robert Plant & Alison Krauss ‘Raising Sands’ enters at No10.

 

Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’ comfortably holds on to the No1 spot for a second week on this week’s Singles Chart despite strong competition from Westlife. The first track to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘Back Home’ , their version of Michael Buble’s ‘Home’ climbs from No 45 to No 2 with the release of the physical formats. Take That remain at No3 with ‘Rule The World’ while Britney Spears drops from No2 to No4 with ‘Gimme More’. This week’s highest new entry is awarded to The Saw Doctors whose re-release of ‘I Useta Lover’ for RTE’s People In Need Charity enters the Chart at No7– having previously made it to No1 on its original 1990 release.

Westlife debut at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Back Home’, their eighth No1 album in Ireland from nine releases (only ‘Allow Us To be Frank missed out on the top spot, peaking at No2 in November 2004). What’s more, it’s the fastest-selling album in Ireland since their last offering ‘The Love Album’ in November 2006.

Mario Rosenstock has the next new entry at No2 with the eighth in his Gift Grub series ‘The G Factor’. Volume 7 debuted at No1 this time last year, but was deposed after one week by the Westlife juggernaut. Britney Spears ‘Blackout’ dips to No3 after debuting at No1 last week, ahead of non-mover ‘Long Road Out Of Eden’ from The Eagles at No4. The third new entry in this week’s Top 5 comes in at No5 - 2FM’s irreverent comedy ‘Nob Nation’, as featured on the Gerry Ryan Show.

 

Leona Lewis takes a third week at No1 on the Singles Chart with ‘Bleeding Love’, selling more copies in the seven day period than any single since her debut ‘Another Moment Like This’ in Christmas week last year. Westlife are held off the top for a second week as ‘Home’ takes a distant second place, but still maintains a comfortable lead over Timbaland’s ‘Apologize’ at No3. Climbing the chart for a fifth consecutive week, ‘Apologize’ is Timbaland’s third Top 3 single this year following ‘Give It To Me’ and ‘The Way I Are’ – all three taken from his No1 album ‘Shock Value’

 

A slightly lower position for Mario Rosenstock's latest singles chart entry. His last one - a reworking of Leave Right Now - entered at no 1 last year with possibly the most bizarre chart run in history. Because it was a limited edition single it plummeted to 19 in its 2nd week and then dropped out completely. Over on the album chart he can be happy that while he didn't quite reach the top he did manage to beat Nob Nation. Mario has had a longtime slot on Today FM's breakfast show but last year a huge row errupted around the time of Gift Grub 7's release between Mario and one of the other contributors to the show - Oliver Callan - over royalties on the album. Oliver quickly jumped ship to rival station 2FM . That's where this weeks no 5 entry originates!

Leona Lewis sings her way into the record books this week, crashing into the Album Chart at No1 with ‘Spirit’ – the fastest-selling debut album ever in Ireland, beating Arctic Monkeys’ 2006 debut ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not’ by a 6,000 sale margin. What’s more, the only other artists to sell as many albums in a 7-day period this decade are Westlife, U2, The Beatles, Robbie Williams and Eminem.

Garth Brooks is denied a seventh Irish No1 album as ‘The Ultimate Hits’ comes in at No2, 13 years after his previous ‘Hits’ compilation topped the Christmas Chart. Led Zeppelin have the third of six new entries in this week’s Top10 with their ‘Mothership’ compilation, ahead of Celine Dion’s tenth English language album ‘Taking Chances’, new at No6. David Gray and The Spice Girls complete the sextet of new entries at No7 and No9 respectively with their ‘Greatest Hits’.

 

Leona Lewis takes the Singles and Albums Chart double crown, with ‘Bleeding Love’ holding for a fourth week at No1. In a Top 5 unchanged from last week, Westlife have a third week at No2 with ‘Home’, ahead of Timbaland, Take That and Britney. In the absence of any new entries in the Top 20, this week’s highest climbers are Alicia Keys ‘No One’, up from No18 to No10, Kylie Minogue ‘2 Hearts’, up from No29 to No12, and finally Rihanna ‘Hate That I Love You’, up from No25 to No13. All three benefit from CD release following initial download sales. If proof were needed that digital sales have transformed the Singles Chart, this week’s highest new entry confirms it: Led Zeppelin debut at No27 with downloads of their 1972 classic ‘Stairway To Heaven’. Their legendary ‘no singles’ policy means that they’ve never before appeared on this chart.

Leona Lewis takes a second week at No1 on the Album Chart with ‘Spirit’, maintaining a healthy lead over Garth Brooks, whose ‘Ultimate Hits’ collection remains at No2.

Led Zeppelin climb two places to No3 with ‘Mothership’, ahead of Westlife’s ‘Back Home’, down from No3 to No4. After last week’s avalanche of new entries, this week’s chart is more stable: the highest newcomer is Alicia Keys at No15 with her third studio album ‘As I Am’. Her first album ‘Songs In A Minor’ peaked at No5 in 2001 and the follow-up ‘Diary Of Alicia Keys’ debuted and peaked at No37 in 2003. Girls Aloud have the next new entry at No25 with ‘Tangled Up’ - their fifth album in less than five years, including their ‘Greatest Hits’ which made No9 a year ago.

 

Leona Lewis extends her run at the top of the Singles Chart to five weeks with ‘Bleeding Love’, ahead of Timbaland’s ‘Apologize’ at No2 and Westlife’s ‘Home’ at No3. In a good week for X-Factor winners, Shayne Ward has this week’s highest new entry at No5 with ‘Breathless’, joining his previous hit ‘If That’s OK With You’ which is at No8 this week after nine weeks in the Top 10. ‘Breathless’ is Shayne’s fifth Top 10 single in Ireland since winning the TV talent show back in December 2005 - three of the previous four made it all the way to the top.
