Saw half the title from the index, and thought y'all were tryna say MOTD was like today's X Factor for music!

Echoing what everyone else said. Running Up That Hill not only inspired enough interest in the charts (it was reported on BBC News) for the OCC to actually change the rules, but it was an already universally high regarded song that became her first number 1 in over 40 years, appealed widely to appeal to both fans at the time and those discovering it for the first time and was by a recognisable legacy act. It's those that are the lifeblood of the chart's relevancy outside niche interests these days and I'd argue it's one of the most culturally impactful number 1s so far this decade.

Sophie has certainly done well, but bar the obvious fact that it's not made number 1, the artist and song aren't the same level of ubiquity and though the song was certainly well regarded, it definitely needed this boost to become as ubiquitous as it now has, which I don't think Running Up That Hill did (it already recharted thanks to the Olympics in 2012). It hasn't quite got that cross-generational appeal either as Sophie's been very much in on the joke and embracing it on TikTok, whereas Kate just reacted with quiet surprise and let each audience do their thing.

I think the source material plays a part as well, Stranger Things is one of the most well known and acclaimed modern TV shows, especially of it's genre, and a cultural phenomenon that brought retro styles back to the mainstream, Saltburn certainly has a few memorable viral moments but when the fanfare's faded, I can't see it holding up as well in the long run.

Any chance of putting the full song title in the discussion name? MOTD is Match of The Day for many people.
funnily I was at a gig (Noah Kahan) and once the gig was over, the first song is the PA system was Murder on th Dancefloor and everybody went mad with singing and dancing like crazy. And most were early 20s, so sure didn't know the song from back then. And everybody was singing the lyrics and I could even hear people saying Oh it's that Sophie something-something song from 2000 :D
Absolutely not. Running Up That Hill was number 1 for 3 weeks, with 10 weeks in the top 10. Murder on the Dancefloor did 7 weeks in the top 10 before dropping to #16.
