She was not credited as a writer on the original or the successful cover versions and the origins of the song have been disputed ever since by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel. Roberta Flack recorded her version after hearing the original on an aeroplane audio system. It spent five weeks at number 1 on the Billboard chart and won three Grammy awards. The Fugees version in 1996 was a UK number 1, also for five weeks. DEbi_YjpA-Y

It only got to number 24 in 1988 but was re-released the following year after 'Paradise City' had been a top 10 hit. Axl Roses' lyrics were about his girlfriend at the time Erin Everly (daughter of Don Everly). 1w7OgIMMRc4
April 1, 20241 yr Ah it's a shame Killing Me Softly couldn't quite reach the top 10, albeit it has done incredibly well to get anywhere near the final on Buzzjack - never mind about almost making the top 10!
April 2, 20241 yr Author 8. Chandelier came three years later so it's now ten years since it was released and the young dancer in the video, Maddie Ziegler, is now 21 years old. Saltwater was his sixth top 40 hit and the first to reach the top 10. He followed it up with the number 1 single, 'Don't Give Up', with Bryan Adams. The song uses parts from Clannad's 1982 top 5 hit 'Theme from Harry's Game' which are new recordings rather than samples. uTJtfytoYy4
April 2, 20241 yr Oh and a surprisingly high finish for Saltwater but fully deserved - sublime track. I’d have had Killing Me Softly over Chasing Cars and Sweet Child Of Mine, both of which are great but overplayed.
April 2, 20241 yr 9, 8, 7 are a other magnificent run of songs. Like others I'm surprised Mr Bluesky wasn't top 10 at least, I had it pegged as the type of song several people would put in their top 5 and would be at least mid-table for almost everyone else
April 3, 20241 yr Really really surprised Chicane ended up at #7 :o Boo at Sweet Child O' Mine ahead of Chasing Cars by 1 point only. :( EDIT: So, there are 4 groups and 2 female singers left. Edited April 3, 20241 yr by Jason
April 3, 20241 yr 'Sweet Child O' Mine' is good but definitely a tad overplayed. Still love 'Chandelier' ten years on  I think that's the song that properly got me into Sia! 'Saltwater' is one of my favourite 90s dance songs, it's sublime. Apparently Máire Brennan now goes by the name Moya Brennan - she had her name changed by deed poll as that's the correct phonetic pronunciation of Máire and she was sick of people saying it wrong! I also recently discovered she's Enya's sister!

It was one of just two top 40 hits for the singer from Blackpool who had entered Pop Idol nine years earlier, failing to get as far as the televised auditions. McdqerXrwXE

It was remixed two years later by StoneBridge and Nick Nice and it was that version that reached number 6. Five more remixes followed with the song charting at 9 in 1997, 61 in 2002, 72 in 2006 and 11 in 2009 (a 1999 remix failed to chart). Andrea Martin, who sang the original demo version, always claimed that it was her vocal that was used on the final recording. Ps2Jc28tQrw
April 4, 20241 yr I'm delighted 'Remedy' finishes as high as number 6  easily one of my favourite pop songs of this century! 'Show Me Love' is massively overplayed.
April 4, 20241 yr Only 1 point separating Show Me Love and Remedy, but this time the right song 'won'. :P
April 4, 20241 yr Oh I'm surprised that Chicane didn't make the top 5 actually. Maybe it's my bias though as I love the track and think it's one of the best dance tracks from the late 90s.

It's the only UK hit single in which both the title and the credited act are palindromes. cvChjHcABPA
April 4, 20241 yr Kinda glad ABBA didn't quite make top 3 as, if I've worked out what's left correctly, the top 3 are all songs I adore.
