I think the impact will be significantly smaller than the past couple of years without the interest of a strong UK finish or a UK hosted contest.

Would be great if Baby Lasagna could make it in to the top 40 though.

Viewing fofures massively down this year too, so even feom that alone the wffect won't be as big.

For some reasons I kinda imagined that from now we'd always have the EURO interest similar to the last coupe years but alas

very little effect this year

Apple:

23 nemo

51 Olly

68 Baby Lasagna

165 Bambie Thug

Last year the contest was held in Liverpool and also there wasn't such a massive crowdpleaser this year a la Måneskin (or the rivalry between Loreen/Käärijä). #23 for Nemo is fairly good imo, should chart top 20/30 on singles chart.

Also, maybe it's me but has Gen Z engagement with the contest fallen off a cliff this year (maybe many younger viewers were boycotting due to Israel participation and therefore didn't hear the songs).

I haven't seen even a quarter of the number of memes on TikTok as I did last year when it was absolutely everywhere.

I think it's a perfect storm this year of:

- No big UK result like in 2022 to drive engagement

- No UK hosting and local interest like last year

- Lower viewing figures, partly due to the above and probably because some people were boycotting / plus general negative vibes around the event in the days leading up to it might have put some off watching

- All leading to less engagement and fewer memes online so less spread of the songs post-contest

- Polarised voting with the eventual winner only coming 5th on the televote (a great live song and artistic moment but unlikely to be a huge commercial hit)

- The UK televote 12 probably wasn't all getting votes for the song itself so is unlikely to be a hit

- The song with arguably the most commercial hit potential (Europapa) was disqualified and therefore has been unable to capitalise properly

- The strength of the streaming market has ballooned out of nowhere and this hasn't translated over to Eurovision - last year only Tattoo would have made the top ten, and at around No.8 instead of No.2 - if the market was at the same strength

I think in future years once things calm down again (I hope) and there are years with more genuinely huge sounding European hits, we will have a bigger impact again. But this year, to me, never felt like it was going to spawn many hits.

It's not essential for ESC to have big commercial value though - for two decades it was basically a fan event with occasional big moment/hit here and there (Euphoria, Conchita Wurst winning etc).

Whilst Nemo came 5th in the public vote, I'd actually say that their song (for me) would be the most likely to have a lasting impact.

Croatia - one of those songs that people vote for on the night, rather than listen to repeatedly

Israel - no comment

Ukraine - powerful performance that got votes on the night, but can't see people racing for repeat listens

France - one of my faves but again his performance on the night would have gotten it votes

Yes agreed, and it may well go back that way, who knows.

The chart hits from the last two years was a nice side effect but not really indicative of a long-term trend.

Sam Ryder clearly drove the engagement sky high in the UK but these early indications are that the great result in 2022, followed by the feelgood vibes and hosting halo effect of 2023, was only a temporary boost.

After all, there's not much fun vibes in your home entry scoring zero on the televote, so domestic viewers are likely to feel less engaged if that sort of thing keeps happening. Especially to an established/well-known artist who had an engaging stage performance (there are other factors at play as to why the entry did poorly - discussed at length elsewhere, but the audience at home may not immediately see what they are and might feel disillusioned).

I think it's a pity, really liked it that Eurovision had such a big effect the last couple years

Now I'm not even sure if Nemo can go top 40 come Friday. I mean, they lost 2 days of streams and if #23 is the peak on Apple, that's not good enough

of course it depends on Spotify and hold they hold up til Friday

Would be terrible if there wasn’t anything in the Top 40 - even the 2020 contest that wasn’t generated a Top 40 hit!

but that Icelandic song was amazing, nothing of the same caliber this year I'm afraid

Eurovision on Spotify:

14. Nemo - The Code

28. Baby Lasagne - Rim Tim Tagi Dim

43. Joost - Europapa

64. Bambie Thug - Doomsday Blue

112. alyona alyona & Jerry Heil - Teresa & Maria

128. Slimane - Mon amour

164. Olly Alexander - Dizzy

165. Angelina Mango - la noia

Regardless of all the drama, I thought the quality of songs at Eurovision this year was extremely poor. Probably my least favourite edition.

A very poor showing all around that wasn't unexpected for me for all the reasons I mentioned earlier. But I'm glad Nemo managed a top 20.

164 for Dizzy is about 100 places lower than I'd have expected though, that is so poor for the home entry.

Does make you wonder how well Europapa could have done if it had been performed in the final.

Good to see a big impact for Nemo... shame about Dizzy

but Olly has physicals, right? maybe they can help go top 40 but I kinda doubt it
