Sad not seeing Rashford or Sterling on the squad anymore, they're certainly not too old. I always thought they were more dynamic a pair than people gave them credit for especially English supporters. That's why I inquired about them as someone who doesn't usually follow the England lineup changes that closely.

Both had underwhelming seasons

I think we're false favourites though - set up by the fact we have an "easier" group on paper. Clearly we have a good attacking team and good players but our defence is incredibly average. We're likely to be playing a half-fit Luke Shaw, John Stones who hasn't regularly played football for 3 months, Walker and Guehi.

Our attack is good, but it's useless without the right support structure. I really like Watkins, but he just does not fit the system Southgate plays imo. Kane is by far our most important player.

I don't see it as anything to do with the group. Its just the squad. England left out Sancho, Rashford, Sterling, Pope, Mount, Reece James, Maguire this us about 500 mill worth of players even Loftus cheek and tomori from AC Milan. So the depth and quality is huge. Bellingham and Foden both ballon dor contender hell even Kane isn't far away. Its just fitting them in right. I'd like to see Wharton start for ball retention, Mainoo too and Rice then allow Bellingham to do what he wants but of course that means a very narrow team.

Sterling has been washed since 2019, wouldn't even make a second England squad these days.

Rashy can definitely get back in there though, we've seen throughout his career that after every bad season he has a blinder.

Agreed, and Southgate won’t be able to get the best out of Bellingham, Foden etc!

If anyone fancies some not-so-light reading, The Guardian's guide to every player at Euro 2024 has just dropped.

I do always enjoy reading these for each tournament, even if I never remember any of the trivia

Yeh it is great alongside the World Soccer teams guide!

Don't see any value there at all

I quite like Spain at 15/2. If they actually play Rodri in his best position and not at CB like they did in the World Cup they could be a real contender.

The tournament feels like it has less of a stink this year, compared with previous ones.

2022 had the complications of being in Qatar, and people probably felt guilty for enjoying it, but also it just felt weird being in the autumn.

2021 had some COVID restrictions still and being in different countries was an interesting one-off but then spoilt a little by audiences booing players taking the knee.

Hopefully it's different this year.

Thanks for this! Very useful. Also great to see Griezmann in the French squad. :gaycat:

This tournament will be much easier to avoid than 2020 was or 2028 will be as it isn't being hosted here.

I'm also amazed we got awarded the 2028 Euros after the disaster that was hosting the 2020 final with all the people breaking in - hopefully Wembley and the police/security can cope with hosting a whole tournament - I remain to be convinced.

Although if it does go well it might work in our favour to try and get the 2038 or 2042 World Cup. Who am I kidding? Qatar will probably get it again.

England is ineligible to host in 2038 due the to the cycling rules (basically as some European countries will host in 2030 the whole confederation is barred from hosting the next 2 editions) so it'll almost certainly be in the US again.

So the earliest the home of football can host another World Cup is 2042? A mere 76 years after it last hosted it.

Yet the US can have it a mere 12 years after last hosting it despite football being a minority sport over there? No wonder we went for the Euros instead then.

FIFA rules can look stupid at the best of times but this takes the mick. Especially giving the 2030 edition features games in South American and Africa so is hardly a 'European' games.

Intriguing intro from ITV.
What did they say?
What did they say?

There was a frankly odd little visual introduction to the tournament and then the host went on to say (i'm paraphrasing) 'not being held in a country the size of a continent, not being held in the middle of a pandemic and not being held in a country with no footballing history'...

Think it's safe to say they're glad to see Germany as hosts.
