The two best songs from their early period and the very excellent The Fly, which signalled their much needed 90s rebirth.

Surprised not to have seen Mysterious Ways by now though

'The Fly' is my second favourite of their #1s and got 15 points from me. I particularly like the closing lines: "Look I gotta go / Yeah I'm running outta change / There's a lot of things / If I could I'd rearrange"

Out of the last 4 the one I like the most is Sunday Bloody Sunday. I guess it was never a UK single cos of the political connotations. Too bad cos it's their best from the pre-Joshua Tree days. Love the drums in particular + the lyrics too.

New Year's Day is also great. It was their first hit peaking at #10 in the UK and also charting in the US top 40.

The Fly I like but don't love. I remember I was slightly disappointed when it originally came out before Achtung Baby, took me yers to warm up to it. The Fly was a #1 in the UK but bombed in the US at #61.

Beautiful Day just ok for me. Typical 00s U2 song, not as good as the 80s material.

So your 🥇 🥈 🥉 in the Buzzjack U2 Olympics are -

One

Where the Streets Have No Name

With or Without You

But where will they position on the podium? All will be revealed tomorrow evening…

I thought I still haven't found would be top 3 in place of Where the Streets but otherwise a predictable top 3 :)
As regards to two out of the three left in, when Kirsty MacColl gave her reasoning for the running order she picked for The Joshua Tree, she was right.

Still Havne't Found is my top U2 track, just add 25 virtual points to the total score, with Pride on 24. They are easily my top 2 U2 tracks. Was hoping they would be the top 2. With Or Without You woulda got a middling set from me, and Streets nowhere near the amount Pet Shop Boys would get, but around the same as WOWY. One I once adored for sad reasons...and then a few years later once I got over that I found it didnt resonate as much anymore, so prob mid-league too.

I'm hoping not voting hasnt affected the top 5 positions!

I wonder what caused 'Mysterious Ways' to chart so low. They were hot property at the time, it was following a #1 and the next two singles from the album went top 10.

Probably a combinations of the album had been out for a month already so the fans had it, and it probably getting lost among all big hits that were out then - George Michael & Elton John, Queen, Nirvana, KLF, Michael Jackson, Guns N Roses, Simply Red and Diana Ross were all having sizeable hits that month. Plus they hadn't quite won over a lot of doubters just yet, following Rattle & Hum's lukewarm reception.

it was also Christmas time, higher sales to go top 10 needed

did better in the US, went to #9 after the Fly flopped at #61

So everyone’s 25 points went to different songs - and the winner in a very tight contest was nobody’s favourite! Thank you everyone for taking part - The Rolling Stones rate will kick off tomorrow. Same rules, so think of your bonuses :)

I’ll post the complete voting figures now.

If anyone knows how to format an excel document into these messageboardsmlet me know haha

I don’t think it is suitable - you’d have to share a Google file or something but don’t worry. ;)

Thanks for hosting!

Surprised to be the highest voter for both “With Or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found…” as they’re 2 of their most obvious classics. I see the former also had 4 23s and a 22 though.

My favourite part of any U2 song is the part in Where the Streets Have No Name from the beginning until 1:46 :kink:
