June 16, 20241 yr Can't complain at that result obviously, although we definitely stepped off the pedal after the first thirty minutes and Serbia were quite unlucky not to score, although it is to our credit we managed to hold them off. Definitely not quite looking like a winning team, but some potential there.
June 16, 20241 yr I’m glad you’ve both said this as I’ve been shocked by how excruciating dull this has been. Super underwhelming! But at least we won. It will be interesting to see how it goes against Denmark on Thursday!
June 16, 20241 yr Serbia showed they are a good side in that 2nd half dominated England. Shows already England won’t win the tournament - in a knockout game against a top side they will concede chances.
June 17, 20241 yr Thought Guehi was excellent considering his inexperience. Also lol at the England fans reaction after this, win 0-1 against a good side but they all still know more than Gareth Southgate 🤣😂😂
June 17, 20241 yr Group stage matches are all about getting 3 points on the board, we've had 6-1 and 6-2 victories under Southgate in the past but that's all irrelevant when the KOs begin and everything is reset. We just need to win the group and if grinding 1-0 wins is what it takes then so be it, that's what we did at the last Euros and got all the way to the final in the end. Bellingham and Saka were great, Kane and Foden completely anonymous. Might be worth bringing in a different forward player in one of the next 2 games.
June 17, 20241 yr I don't subscribe to a win is a win BS, England have looked terrible the last five games, failing to create chances, failing to keep the ball, giving away numerous chances in each game. This isn't a good sign. The opposition hasn't even been great in any of the games. Kane was arguably one of the best Bundesliga players, Jude got player if the season in la Liga, Foden won player of the season in England and Southgate had England looking like an average side. It should be so much better.
June 17, 20241 yr Nah, winning is much more importance than the performance in tournament football. Many a team have won these competitions without ever looking that great (Portugal in 2016 being a very dramatic example). Croatia have penalty-shooted themselves to a World Cup final and semi-final: However, the performances recently are a bit of a worry. The Bosnia game was ok but England haven’t really put in a decent performance since they beat Italy in October We look incapable of controlling matches and dominating the midfield. Dare I say we miss really miss having Phillips or Henderson in there? I do like what Alexander-Arnold brings in there but I think it might be worth starting Wharton against Denmark to try to ensure we get some possession.

I think Jude and Foden like the same areas which Kane often likes to drop into himself. So we are making Kane not play to his full strengths then Foden is also wastes, to make matters worse Rice has to be a DM and that's not even his forte really. So we have an RB in midfield a striker restricted and one of the worlds best players wasted with a 100mill CM not playing to his strengths either. Its simple bad coaching. You have to make tough decisions. England never did that with Gerrard and Lampard they tried to fit them both in to the teams cost. I think you have to just say to Foden sorry but you can be a supersub. We need balance and someone who can keep the ball. I'm thinking Walker—Guehi—Stones—Shaw Wharton Rice Palmer Bellingham Saka Kane With mainoo and foden and maybe Gordon if the game isn't going well to switch things up. This current team is heading to a QF exit for sure
June 17, 20241 yr It may well be so but think Foden needs to just play a lot closer to Kane and be in and around the box with 1-2s.
June 17, 20241 yr Foden is going to be this era's Paul Scholes. Minimal impact for England, shunted out to the left to accommodate other players and will be retired from international duty before 30.
June 18, 20241 yr He doesn’t really play out left for this team though he’s been given a free role He plays all over for City, but mostly starts on the right. And then he always drifts in-field too. The problem is Foden looks so good for City at times because of the patterns he's coached to play. He naturally wants to drift in to the space that Bellingham and Kane play in, and likewise some of his patterns he plays you can clearly see he's thinking he's in a Guardiola team. He's a big game player, but I do think we might be a bit better without him starting.. although Southgate clearly sees him as someone for the left and not the right side.
