I feel like this is gonna be completely underwhelming but will almost certainyl have to give it a watch (like with Gran Turismo last year).

Also I can't at the whole premise of the movie being an 11th team when F1 are doing everything to prevent that from happening IRL.

So here's where I am with this.

Using the Eurovision movie as a comparison - that was a movie made by someone who loved Eurovision, but included changes that did not represent the actual competition (e.g. if I remember rightly the way the semi final results are done is done differently in the film. There were other things but I can't remember off the top of my head).

This feels similar, in that it may be a film that takes some elements of the sport (so it's still F1) but changes some aspects for cinema. e.g. I'm not an expert but if you carry no speed in straights, you ain't going to be anywhere near in the corners to make overtakes.

Still looking forward to seeing this though

Out now and just seen it with the parents. As someone who doesn't really follow F1 I was surprisingly a big fan! 8/10, my mother hated it though, saying Pitt's acting was robotic and that she was annoyed by the race commentator "explaining the rules of F1 like I've never seen it before". My dad who is an even bigger F1 fan also loved it and didn't mind the commentator.

From the reviews I've read, I get the impression that as both a long time F1 fan and cinephile, I'm going to find it comes up short in both departments

If you go in expecting a 100% authentic portrayal of the Sport (which by the way I have no idea why anyone would) then you're gonna end up disappointed. You have to accept it at face value and you'll have a much better time. I found it genuinely really entertaining and visually impressive. And just the fact that a movie like this even exists (would have unimaginable only 10 years ago) is amazing as a long-time fan. Spotting all the Easter eggs was a personal highlight.

Yeah that makes sense - weirdly I remember having a same realisation about the Eurovision movie - some parts of it changed the rules of Eurovision/the way results are presented and I had to take myself out of my annoyance and just enjoy the film for what it was

There's no way realistic modern F1 is suitable for accurate representation in cinema - too much technical detail and strategy that won't be interesting in a movie. That's one of the reasons Drive to Survive is so fabricated and that's got 10 episodes a year.

I'd just like it to be plausible and I'm not hearing that

Watched this tonight and found it to be not bad.

It does indeed look great and was kind of what I expected. Paper thin, predictable plot, cliched script and some very silly moments. It's utterly ridiculous to try and believe that Pitt's character could either perform to that standard after so long out or behave on track in the manner he does without punishment but it was expected after seeing the trailers and reviews.

I found both the lead characters to be rather hard to warm to. Cocky, arrogant old hand and cocky arrogant rookie driver doesn't give you much to go with. However, Condon and Bardem were great in the roles. Thought the way the female pit crew character was portrayed was pretty poor too.

Kind of like that it sort of shines a light indirectly, on Martin Donnelly, who was a a genuine future star at the time.

Would probably watch again at some point but not in any hurry. Grand Prix remains the gold standard for F1 movies, with Ford V Ferrari as probably the best motoracing film of all.

Honestly those actions you're referring to totally reminded me of Magnussen in the Miami Sprint last season (just a little more exaggerated) so wasn't completely beyond the absurd.

And the last race shenanigans could totally have been reality given what actually happened in 2021...

The only thing I thought was way OTT was the crash at Monza but then I was reminded of an F3 crash a few years ago where a car went over some sausage kerbs and vaulted into orbit. But for the driver's teammate to get the blame was a bit ludicrous.

Spoilers ahead - be warned

There's lots of silly things in the film. Firstly, Sonny Hayes wouldn't be allowed in F1 without a superlicense which he clearly couldn't have but ignoring that he would almost certainly get a 10 second penalty and maybe 3 points on his license from his actions on the start at Silverstone. At Monza it is stated over team radio, to be prepared, then he collides with Magnussen. The team confirm over team radio it was deliberate and then he does it again with Bottas. 10 second stop-go and 4 penalty points for each time, He's arguably 1 point away from a ban already. Then he deliberately collides with polystyrene boards to cause a red flag. At this point he'll almost certainly be black flagged and the team potentially disqualified. But no, he later holds up Verstappen in a clear case of deliberately driving slowly (3 pts) then ignoring blue flags - another penalty and 2 more points on his license. That's 16 and an automatic ban in his first three races but given the nature of the actions he'd likely have his (non existent) license revoked.

That's ignoring some implausible aerodynamic and traction leaps, which made the Abu Dhabi race ridiculous.

The Monza crash was a laugh out loud moment. I can see the similarity to Alexander Peroni's crash - it's clearly inspired by that - but F1 cars are too heavily to launch like that and we have all but banned sausage kerbs since.

That being said, it's a brain off popcorn movie and it is entertaining enough with it but I can see a lot of people coming to the sport to find it's not at all how they expect.

You didn't even get to see qualifying at all in the film. The Monza crash was almost inspired by Driven.
