That is really disappointing that live performances are dropped, they were great last year and where else are these unknown artists going to get a primetime mainstream slot like that? :/

I've listened to two of those (Charli & The Last Dinner Party), I do kind of hope it isn't the latter even though the album was quite enjoyable as they've had enough hype and it's not that level. Have heard selected ones from Nia Archives and English Teacher and liking what I know.

Apparently the reason for no live awards show this year is because they couldn't find a sponsor, which sucks as I'd have loved to see some of these performances.
Cat Burns really? :o

Must've been submitted way before the deadline but it's allowed as it was released on the cut-off date.

All of you sleeping on the Barry Can't Swim album need to listen to it

Cat Burns really? :o

Must've been the awe inspiring lyrics such as "if there's something you want to do, just do it" that got it for her.

Of course.

When I suggested Bob Vylan should be nominated, I completely forgot that the artist/label has to pay for the privilege of being allowed as a nominaton.

And now I remember why the list is pretty bland every year.

I only finally watched the live performances for the first time last year, that's really disappointing that it's not happening this time. That and their failure to find a sponsor makes me worry a bit that the award might be on its last legs.

'BRAT' is the only one of these I've heard but there are 4 more on the list that I want to get to listening to eventually so happy to see them nominated (Barry Can't Swim, Beth Gibbons, English Teacher and Nia Archives). BERWYN has had a couple of cool songs as well. Not too fussed on the other half of the nominations at least from their recent output, although corto.alto is ofc the token jazz pick I've never heard of so can't really pass judgement there, especially after Ezra Collective turned out to have a pretty fantastic performance last year. Except yeah, no performances this year, boo. Might have to try and check out something from them of my own accord at some point x

Corinne Bailey Rae yes very much up for that, poor Corinne didnt make the final of BJSC with her awesome re-invention New York Transit Queen, or get radio play, or TV spots, or anything much really, other than some newsprint praise for gigs and the album. I think that qualifies as being the point of the Mercury Prize.....

Winner will be revealed on 5th September and it will be broadcast on TV! The acts will watch recorded performances of each other from the past year instead of performing live

BBC Four 8pm-9:15pm

BBC Radio 6 Music 7pm-11pm with Tom Ravenscroft, Deb Grant and Matt Everitt

Congrats to English Teacher then, can't say I'm overly familiar with their work so might have to check it out this week
I also forgot this was happening today but I didn't really have the same level of interest in watching the ceremony without the live performances anyway so I might have given it a miss even if I remembered - I did clock that it was happening in time to tune in to watch the winner being announced though, and very happy with that choice based on the handful of tracks I've heard from it ('The World's Biggest Paving Slab', 'Albert Road' and 'R&B'). Need to check out the album in full ~
Only just checked them out as they won, very impressed with what I’m hearing! It’s giving Sometimes I Sit and Wait era Courtney Barnett.
