October 20, 20232 yr Author Is the Cliff Richard song an updated version of his #2 hit from 1989 or a completely different song? It is a new orchestral version from his 'Cliff with Strings' album out in a couple of weeks
October 22, 20232 yr Author I don't know if something has changed in the past few months at Radio 2 but the tracks they're playing right now really are not clicking with me at all.
October 23, 20232 yr BBC Radio 2 Playlist | 21/10/23 A List Ed Sheeran - American Town Thought this wasn't a single. Isn't loads of radio play pretty much the definition of a single in 2023?
October 23, 20232 yr Thought this wasn't a single. Isn't loads of radio play pretty much the definition of a single in 2023? Yes it is a single, it wasn't when Ed talked about the album having no singles but things have obviously changed

October 27, 20232 yr Wow, Imaani is back! Does Leigh-Anne have some links to Global? 2 of hers on the Capital playlist is a bit much
October 28, 20232 yr I find it weird that Calm Down was removed off the Capital playlist despite still getting plays but Tension is still on there even though I haven't even heard it on the station for a bit.

November 3, 20232 yr R2 do pick the weirdest dance songs to playlist - I wonder why they’ve picked that Robin Schulz song in particular? Especially as I’ve felt the playlist has been more MOR recently with very few ‘dance’ songs on there. I’d have said that out of current chart hits Greedy, Strangers and Stick Season would all suit them pretty well but they’ve chosen to ignore those.

Yes, they seem incredibly inconsistent about what they play/ignore. There are things that I can't believe are getting on Radio 2 but then stuff that should be perfect for them gets completely ignored (where's Mitski for instance). It's ludicrous that Strangers hasn't been playlisted, it was the biggest song in the country for weeks and it's hardly going to be abrasive noise to the age group they're trying to attract these days. They have definitely playlisted 'harder' dance stuff. Sometimes the playlist looks quite exciting then it reverts to type and goes extremely bland for a month or so. November 3, 20232 yr Author It's definitely the worst it's ever been for me at the moment, I was really into it during 2020-2022 but it's reverting back to what it was before so maybe they've changed who's on the committee. Not sure they would've ever bothered with Strangers to be honest, they've never been ones to playlist something just because it's #1 but it's not entirely unreasonable to think they might have played it because it's not an abrasive track. Some choices are questionable I guess and perhaps they're struggling to cater to a wider audience every now and then.

But yes it is odd how they snub songs that seem perfect. The only thing I can think is that they are heavily influenced by pluggers, rather than looking at streaming numbers. So perhaps no one is particularly pushing Strangers to them.
November 3, 20232 yr Author I was thinking more of the early to mid 2010s but I'm probably way off there. It just doesn't feel the same and I've been posting it on here for 7 years now

I feel like this about 6 Music too, who constantly ignore Radio 1 tracks that would suit them just fine because they are not on the small pool of indie labels they normally focus on/get told what to playlist by like Rough Trade, 4AD, Matador, Domino, Heavenly etc. Or by Johnny Marr. November 4, 20232 yr Also noticed there are various acts falling down a hole between Radio 1 and Radio 2 for being too loud and heavy or something. Blink-182 having pretty great singles chart success of late, can't Radio 2 playlist them? Surely that's the perfect act to get behind if they want to attract the fortysomethings? I'm sure 24-year-old All The Small Things is on quite a bit on there! They've never fully got behind post-Radio 1 Muse or Foo Fighters either. Edited November 4, 20232 yr by HiyaLuv2

November 4, 20232 yr ONE MORE TIME is quite inoffensive being a ballad with a sense of late tens anticlimaticnous They should definitely play that. Basically the 2023 Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). It should probably be Buzzjackers making these decisions for them, we'd do a much better job.

I don’t mind that really, it’s supposed to be an alternative station. And they do playlist a fair few Radio 1-supported artists: Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C., The Last Dinner Party, Yard Act, Arctic Monkeys, Phoebe Bridgers etc come to mind. (And all bar Phoebe are on majors!)
November 11, 20232 yr Author No idea when Radio 2 are updating their playlist but for now here are the new entries Dua Lipa - Houdini James Bay - All My Broken Pieces Bananarama - Feel The Love Nitin Sawhney feat.
