  • It is an odd choice but I think Tom Grennan will feel bigger to young people.

Tom Grennan headlining makes it even odder that they decided to snub ‘Shadowboxing!’ I thought that he was going to start to struggle to get R1 support from now on but obviously I’m wrong!

BBC names extensions as Radio 1 Anthems and Radio 3 Unwind

BBC Radio 1 has today announced the name of its new extension, Radio 1 Anthems.

The new service will launch on Friday 8th November 2024 on BBC Sounds, joining an enhanced Radio 1 Dance which commenced earlier this year.

The second extension has also been named as Radio 3 Unwind, which has been mentioned on-air at Radio 3 for the last few weeks.

The third, an oldies version of BBC Radio 2, is still going through a public interest test.

The BBC says: “Radio 1 Anthems will help young audiences discover and re-discover a wide range of music and acts supported by Radio 1 in the 2000s and 2010s with a dedicated focus on growing new on-air and off-air talent.

“The content mix will include existing on-demand content available on BBC Sounds including Radio 1’s Workout Anthems, Radio 1’s Chillout Anthems and Radio 1’s Pop Anthems, and also make use of the extensive Radio 1 archive.

“The brand-new extension will build on Radio 1’s history of successfully spotting and developing young talent into the industry, helping to stimulate the creative sector. New talent will be showcased across the schedule including specific programmes made and hosted by presenters fresh out of student radio.”

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, adds: “Radio 1 Anthems is going to be a great nostalgic trip for our young audience, and to make it happen we’re going to be giving some new opportunities to people from across the UK.

“Radio 1 plays a crucial role in developing new talent for the entire industry, and we can’t wait to bring this new offer for our listeners to enjoy and discover.”

The R2 one makes sense as they begin to filter out the pre 1990 stuff from the main channel what with the more modern presenter roster and the audience moving on as history moves on. I mean stuff from the 50s and 60s will be 100 years old before too long!

I was hoping for a bit more from the Radio 1 Anthems stream than just repeats of existing shows. I'll reserve judgement completely until I've seen the schedule in full but it does sound promising to have some new shows and DJ talent being given an opportunity. My concern is the stream will be 15 hours of Anthems shows we've already heard though
It’ll be like the night time on the normal channel then which normally plays shows repeated 😂

I see we still don't have any news on a permanent replacement in the Fri-Sun 1-4pm slot. Joel Mitchell has been in for these past few weeks but it's still tagged as 'Summer on Radio 1'. I spy Emil Franchi doing October which is a pleasant surprise as he's barely been about since securing his Absolute Radio role. I've heard somewhere that Jack Remmington is joining in some capacity too?

The new Anthems shows have started in the small hours over on BBC Sounds ahead of the Radio 1 Anthems station launch on 8th November at 9am. I've listened to the 2 that are available and they're a good mix of songs, presenter talk and classic interviews (heard Girls Aloud talking to Scott Mills from over 20 years ago!).
Obviously loving the nostalgic 00s and 10s bangers on a Sunday morning but if Nat O'Leary had said 'babes' one more time yesterday morning I would have thrown the radio into Rotherham. Yes I know I'm not in the target audience, but neither is she!

I'd say those of us in our 20s and early 30s are the target audience. After all, 35 is the top limit of the demographic and the 00s started almost 25 years ago so Radio 1 is just on the right side of representing this decade. Nat is in her early 30s so is the right age to have an interest in both decades but she really grates on me as a presenter (persistently gets song names and artists incorrect too) which is possibly why I think Vicky was brought in to provide some balance and support.

As posted on Radio 1’s socials, who would have guessed The Zutons would be back in the live lounge?

“In celebration of 25 years of radio 1’s #LiveLounge @thezutonsofficial will be closing #livelouge month performing an extra-special performance of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ and their iconic hit ‘Valerie’ 🫶💕

listen live from 12pm, wednesday 30th october on @bbcsounds”

Very surprised at this considering they haven't entertained their current album campaign at all! I'd hoped they'd do some tracks from their debut album but Valerie is the right shout I guess

Ah I did wonder what had happened with this as venbee and Cat Burns were the last acts to be explicitly featured. Jack's show is definitely the right format to break these announcements and features moving forward. Big fan of what Myles Smith is doing, if you can get past Stargazing and listen to his latest singles since they're miles above
Yes glad to see this back, it’s def needed with the way the charts are now so R1 don’t just follow Spotify playlists because their songs chart well. That’s not what R1 should be about despite playing hits.
