Yeah for me there are three big hits whose sales seem somewhat too low for how big they felt at the time:

Mel B's I Want You Back, Emma's What I Am and What Took You So Long... They were EVERYWHERE and got to #1 and #2 but yet somehow their sales were really lacking... It's odd...

Well, Out of Your Mind sold 180K but still had to settle for number two. I'll never get over that one.

Still, it sold well overall, over 400k!!! The others didnt get much higher... Specially What Took You So Long which was #1 for two weeks and was literally everywhere...

True, but compare it to It's Raining Men was also released that year and outsold almost all of them so it's a moot point really.

yes, but you had made the comparison with two other singles, in any case yes Geri sold a lot compared to Emma which came out in the same period, I think that the release weeks vary a lot.

It's Raining Men was also part of a huge film's soundtrack that year which included the song in a pivotal moment in the film. Emma did not have that kind of backing for her song.

Maybe if It's Raining Men didn't have that backing, it would have sold similar to Emma's, specially considering that since after those two releases neither of them managed to cross the 100k mark again lol

I mean the fact that Gabrielle's Out Of Reach, which was also everywhere and part of that films soundtrack, didn't hit #1 and in fact charted at #4 selling a lot less (at that time, streaming has really helped that song) suggests IRM would have been a bigger hit than Emma's was in it's own right.

I guess we're only guessing here but I think IRM is really attached to that film. But sure due to her previous sales you would guess she would have done better than Emma anyway, but that's not what I was saying lol

Either way the public was kind of done with the Spices by then, these two singles were pretty much the last mainstream success that any of them had solo. Both were just insanely catchy songs with heave promotion, Geri's was aided even more by the film. I don't think that's a wild think to suggest lol

So sad that they were the last two properly big Spice related hits in the UK. 🥲 At least FDOML was another big hit in a few European countries, but it's been 20 years since a proper big hit single from the girls. 😭
