Good climb for Talk Talk on Spotify...

Feels a bit of a shame it had a Thursday release - but should (hopefully) be a top 40 hit nonetheless

That feels like a bit of an underperformance for The Weeknd on Spotify in terms of first day streams. Hopefully it climbs over the coming days/ weeks.

Saying that its not like Blinding Lights had massive first day streams, or some of his other lead songs.

Thats kinda poor, #10 with just 300K, but the song is disappointing imho, sounds too similar to the Ariana one, we can't be friends, almost identical in the chorus

Whats the story with this Playboi Carti song? I see its #1 in the US with a huge lead

Take My Breath also "only" debuted at #11, worth pointing out. That had 267k while this has 310k so this one's doing better, and The Weeknd has no precedent for debuting at #1 or even close to it. Double Fantasy debuted at #9 and Popular at #13, I think they're probably the only other post-After Hours tracks it feels appropriate to make a comparison to (Sacrifice was pushed alongside the album release, and as a result is his *only* top 10 debut as primary artist post-Blinding Lights).

I think sometimes people have an unrealistic expectation of what the Weeknd will do, he’s never really debuted that strongly. Even Blinding Lights took its time.

Plus tbh I’m not convinced his new one will end up being a particularly big hit

I'd say that's decent for Tate as it didn't have the huge pre release hype that Exes and Greedy had. I've seen it get a lot of hype on TikTok/Twitter so hopefully that translates now.
Teddy Swims seems to have a new song Bad Dreams new on both Apple (#125) and Amazon (#35)

What a nightmare for us!

Yes although as per usual with her, the hype has nothing to do with the actual quality of the song itself (because she can’t sing)

I see it now at #101 lol

of course Blinding Lights didn't debut at #1, cos he wasn't that popular back then

that's what you have to factor in

that Blinding Lights make him the biggest star in the planet so now he should come back after ages of silence and debut at #1

it's the same as if Sabrina released a brand new single in a couple months

sure she's never debuted at #1 before

but 2024 has changed her completely

so now she should debut at #1

when an artist has exploded and become the biggest star in the planet

you cannot go and compare to the pre-fame era

I think it's a burden for artist if their old songs are super popular. The Weeknd is practically one of the if not THE most listened artist on Spotify because of his massive older hits. It's always an uphill for a new track, especially if the general consensus is that they've done better in the past.

I couldn't disagree more with the idea that The Weeknd wasn't a massive star until Blinding Lights tbf, fair enough he wasn't quite as omnipresent on the radio or in the charts but he released that track on the back of two extremely successful album rollout within the previous three years. Worth It/The Hills/Can't Feel My Face and then Starboy/I Feel It Coming were both globally successful single combos.

calling The Weeknd's career 'pre-fame' is just baffling lol

(for what it's worth the 300k debut for his latest song is pretty much in line with what I expected)

He's had an entire era between Blinding Lights and now, and he didn't come anywhere *near* #1 with anything from Dawn FM. In fact, even on album release week, Sacrifice "only" got to #10. He's also had a series of hits from The Idol, none of which came close to #1 on debut. I don't know why he'd all of a sudden be expected to debut at #1 now because of a song from almost 5 years ago that was two album eras ago. There's quite literally zero precedent for him debuting at #1.

Also lol at the suggestion that The Weeknd wasn't that popular before Blinding Lights.
