Dance has struggled all round this year it seems.

The charts have become more international than ever this year I think, the US and Australian charts are looking more and more like our own as each week passes - but the likes of Spain, Germany, Finland, Sweden etc have at least remained largely immune so this increased globalisation must be somewhat limited to English speaking countries. Dance has always been more popular in the UK than elsewhere, and we seem to be getting fewer UK only hits these days, which must have impacted dance music. There have been a lot of great tracks that I feel might have broken through a few years ago that just aren't now, for whatever reason (weaker playlisting, less airplay, less dance going viral on TikTok...)

Somedays and Kisses have done very well to do as well as they have.

This really makes me sad as UK music is so much better than American, no offence!

The UK music scene in general has become more and more dry in recent years, for so many reasons. Yeah, we've had Charli recently (even that was kinda limited) but other than that, but if we look at the bigger picture - Dua's album had very underwhelming results, god knows where Harry is, Adele is back on hiatus and after over 2 years we are still yet to have a major girl group to fit Little Mix's slot, we haven't had a major new UK pop artist since Lewis and also the rap/grime scene is looking at bit dry too.

You can't really celebrate UK talent, when the pot is basically empty

A lot of this is down to TikTok though, yeah there's the odd exception, but TikTok creates buzzy songs and not artists. In this current climate it's difficult for any form of groups to stick out be it pop groups or a band (maybe K pop being the expception), infact I'd say if you looked over the last 10 years you'd really struggle to see a non solo artist or duo in the Top 3 in the charts. Not sure we'll see a successful group for a while yet.

The problem I feel in the current music sphere is labels/artists chase hits that will go viral on TikTok, rather than it organically happening. Means you end up having a load of music which could be associated with tens of generic artists.

Harry's House came out less than 2.5 years ago, and he was touring it until a little over a year ago! I don't think we're that far off new Harry music but we're only a little past the gap between Fine Line and Harry's House as it is.

It does beg the question, how long will TikTok continue to claim its tight grasp on the UK Chart industry? I mean, will it still be as powerful in 10 years time say? What else, if anything, can overtake it as a force for music artists and viral moments to cause serious impact on the charts, therefore reducing space for smaller artists? I can't see much changing on the horizon. TikTok is here to stay and its influence and power is only going to increase to the point that other social media platforms will cease to exist in years to come.

The only way things change is if the OCC make changes, but it seems many on BuzzJack oppose such changes feeling like the current structure is fit for purpose which, in my opinion, it is not.

Remember the time when there were Vine hits

There will always be social media and other platforms that drive music to charts.

TikTok will die down just like all the other social media websites and something else will take its place.
Think tik tok is slowly starting to dwindle already it seems to be moving more towards a shopping app
I think we forget about the huge influence record companies used to exert on the charts. It used to be impossible for unknown artists to break through without the right contacts. Now they rely on someone using a clip of their work on social media. That isn’t a fair way for talent to be judged either. It’s given us a mixture of great hits, mediocre hits, old hits getting a second chance to shine and old hits that really didn’t need to come back again. It’s a lottery but it’s still preferable to it being all about the big record labels.
Ever since maybe may its been horrendous but pre may it was some of the best months in music in years. The latter part of the year is looking up
