I do agree with this to be honest, maybe it's just a case of different veto factors holding more/less weight - a refresh of the rules might be a good thing to consider for the new year.

I think it obviously is just a case by case basis, most of the time I'm not familiar with the songs being vetoed either but then I don't frequent the chart forum, other music forums, blogs etc. I do find the mod discretion rule a bit flakey as well, for want of a better word.

To put it back to artists already mentioned, I think if Dagny is going to be vetoed then so should Alice Chater have been (for example) - they're in a similar realm imo. It's cases like that which makes me think it's more the points allocation that needs a little update more than anything else.

I get how demanding doing research on every song each month is, if we can take some pressure off as entrants somehow then I'd be all for that. Like Jafet said, if we can check our own songs fully before sending them that would probably help - I wouldn't know where to start with checking blogs and charts etc if it doesn't immediately come up on Google

Maybe doing an end of year survey where we could get a tell of how people discover new music, what playlists and charts etc they follow would give a good indicator of the current contest climate and which channels should hold the most veto points?

(Alesha was always going to get vetoed so I'm definitely not pressed there  )

??? Because that was necessary.

Can we just make her the winner of BJSC ♾️?

maybe the real delivery was the drama we made along the way

I think the vetoes look fair. Quite often I haven’t heard all of them but still agree.

Alesha Dixon is a no brainer, she’s a formerly successful popstar, still a well known celebrity, many pop fans on the forum will have checked the song at least out of curiosity when it was released.

Keisza similar - she had a popular No.1 hit here only a decade ago and she’s just come off a top five in BJSC very recently - that is a big familiarity advantage and again, many people will have likely checked it out or will get round to doing so off their own back at some point.

Yuné I heard once when it came out but if it was in the charts of multiple active participants then that’s a fair veto too. Thats quite a (likely - unless people have suddenly gone off it since) built-in headstart on points so it’s fair to veto to level the playing field.

The only one I probably wouldn’t have vetoed there is RÜFÜS DU SOL but I do understand the reasoning, and it seems fair. Probably more of a borderline one.

Are we still on 57 participants or has anyone else joined / not reconfirmed?

Not to sound patronizing but personally I find it more satisfying to do well with a song that isn’t known or expected to do well. Also it’s not like we’re going to be experiencing potential entries scarcity any time soon. Digging slightly deeper doesn’t take much time at all and most streaming platforms have good algorithms that push new artists via recommendations. Non-front page Spotify playlists are really good as a starting point for example.

We wouldn’t be having this conversation or such a strict veto framework if people didn’t try to find loopholes. So it’s a bit of a spidermen pointing at each other meme :’)

Excellent! Except for the odd number of participants yet again...

That is really disappointing for Jade :(

fwiw re Alice Chater I had only heard of her on an Iggy Azalea song after her chart time was long over, & I don't follow any other pop blogs etc. apart from here really, and not even this that much nowadays either.

I think it came up on my spotify recs and then happened to have a music video release. As it happens it did kind of just ok anyway.

Personally I can take or leave rule change, although I think it bears noting that the kind of stuff that does well on BJSC now isn't always pop, and pop tracks even that might be 'well known' to pop fans aren't guaranteed to do well here due to the BJSC demographic/crowd not necessarily leaning in that direction

Personally I think the 25 point auto-DQ limit should just be the cut off limit in general. I think if a song doesn't score higher than that it's always going to be controversial and hard to argue that whoever sends it has any real advantage over other songs.

Re: Kiesza (my initial submission), I think it's a hard sell that a one hit wonder from 2014 is too well known, especially since her previous entries consist of a DNQ, two 23rd places, along with one 4th placer. Multiple previous winners have been allowed to be entered again after winning too (myself having entered some personally and then failing to even qualify) so I don't think her coming 4th recently should matter too much. 🤷‍♂️

Oh and Pavel, I haven't had a proper hit in almost two years so at this point I don't think I can afford to be picky about the alleged cheapness of my entries 🫠
