I probably listened to about 40 new albums this year. Quite a few I only heard one and wouldn't really be able to rank. Here are the top 25 that I had on repeat.

'The Off Season' was my #1 album of 2021 so 'Might Delete Later' missing the top 10 does look especially bad it wasn't a proper album tbh and I have high hopes that 'The Fall Off' will return him back to the top.

10. Kendrick Lamar - GNX

GNX is the latest release to make the top 10. It's far from my favourite album from Kendrick but it feels like a fitting one after the year he's had. BRAT might be the most critically acclaimed album of the year but it hasn't been able to live up to 'CRASH' for me as that was my #1 album of 2022. I do still love it though and it was amazing seeing her in an arena show setting last month compared to the smaller venue for the last tour. THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT took a few listens for me to really love but seeing The Eras Tour certainly helped. I'll stick to the original version though, I'm a rarity in not really enjoying the extra Anthology tracks. Everybody Can't Go was the best discovery from my initial plan to listen to all the major Hip-Hop releases of the year. Benny has released three projects this year and I've enjoyed them all but this was certainly the pick of the bunch. Willson completed the trilogy of Ashe albums titled after each part of her full name and is the best of the three. Definitely the most under-looked album of the year.

1. Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine :cheer:

Highlights - yes, and?, we can't be friends (wait for your love), the boy is mine

2. Common & Pete Rock - The Auditorium, Vol. 1

Highlights - Dreamin', Stellar, Fortunate

3. Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet

Highlights - Juno, Espresso, Taste

4. Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well

Highlights - Superbloom, Cardinal, Ruthless

5. Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA

Highlights - Darling, I, Take Your Mask Off, Like Him

Two albums that didn't initially hook me to open the top 5 with CHROMAKOPIA initially feeling like bit of a step-down for Tyler after his last two incredible albums. I'm still not fully sold on 'Sticky' but, aside from that, I know fully appreciate what this album is trying to do. 'Judge Judy' and 'Hey Jane' are two of the best story-telling tracks for a long time and 'Like Him' is equally as heart-breaking. I'm so hyped for this tour next year. It was actually a tour this year that helped Deeper Well fully win me over. I've seen some of my all-time favourites this year but I think Kacey Musgraves might have been the best concert of the year. If you ever get the chance, I can't recommend seeing her more. The deluxe version was released after this and by that time, I was obsessed with the album and actually think the deluxe has the stand-out tracks. Landing in bronze position after a wonderful 2024 is Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet. The single run from this is insane and I'm so happy that she's realised her potential and become the new main pop girlie. 'emails i can't send' remains one of the best albums of the decade and while this album can't match that, I do think that it has the higher peaks. Just missing out on my top album of the year is The Auditorium, Vol. 1. By far and away the best Hip-Hop record of the 2020s so far, the only world I have to describe this album is exquisite. Pete Rock's beats are smooth as hell and Common has done what most rappers can't and age like fine wine with some of the most intelligent and hitting verses of the year. This album feels like a proper throwback to my favourite eras of rap and doesn't waste a second of it's 63 minute runtime. But there can only be one winner and after an agonising over 3-year wait for new music, there was no way that Ariana Grande and 'eternal sunshine' was not going to come out on top. It might not be in my holy trinity of Ariana albums ('thank u, next', 'Dangerous Woman' and 'My Everything') but I do think it's better than 'positions' and was well-worth the wait, She doesn't go for the high notes like we know she can on this album but what she does instead is treat us to a more sultry tone that feels more raw which helps the stories of her tracks come through even more,

Just giving When The Sun Shines again given you posted in and having a skim through the lyrics - certainly some interesting points in there! Quite different to a lot of rap songs out there.

Thanks for giving it a listen Pete. It's definitely a style of rap that I think could appeal to you more than the ones that make the official chart.

01. Cardinal - 83 plays

02. Deeper Well - 56 plays

==03. Ruthless - 48 plays

==03. Superbloom - 48 plays

This is based purely off my last.fm stats so just counts my Spotify plays but is going to be mostly accurate. It's definitely been Kacey Musgraves gets a top 5 position after her amazing concert has put 'Star-Crossed' and 'Golden Hour' back in rotation alongside her new album, 'Deeper Well'. Charli xcx just lands behind Sabrina Carpenter in a close race for bronze position. My BRAT tour date last month kept Charli in the race but ultimately 'Short n' Sweet' being the bigger album for me has kept Sabrina ahead. Expect Sabrina to continue to be a threat next year with her tour coming to UK where I will be seeing her for a third time. The Eras Tour was almost enough for Taylor Swift to get the win but she ends up in second place. She was definitely my sound of the summer where I was just rinsing the playlist with all the songs she performed on my show (including the surprise songs 'I Can See You', 'Mine', 'Cornelia Street' and 'Maroon'). I've finally got my favourite album of hers on vinyl ('Reputation') as a Christmas present today and I can't wait to give that a spin. But releasing a lead-single in January was enough for Ariana Grande to get an early lead which she never surrendered. I'll update this on 1st Jan as there's still time for things to change.

130. YUQI - FREAK

Chart Run: 7-7-12-19 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =111

Lyric: Fell in love too fast, got a speeding ticket

Yuqi's Chart History:

2024 07 Freak

Despite never even listening to a (G)I-DLE song, I somehow came across this solo effort from member Yuqi. It has a fun music video packed full of horror movie references (and an out-of-place E.T. nod) but I didn't go back to it at all after it fell out of my chart so cannot finish any higher.

129. Delta Goodrem - Hearts On The Run

Chart Run: 13-7-17-18-19 (5 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =126

Lyric: It's just the beginning, can you feel the rush of it?

Delta Goodrem's Chart History:

2024 07 Hearts On The Run

I'm also not sure how I ended up coming across this song from Delta. It definitely has a bit of a Radio 2 feel with an 80s throwback sound but it sounds like something that could have been a hit if it was reworked slighty and a newer artist recorded it.

128. ROSÉ - gameboy

Chart Run: 8-8-9- (3+ weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =114

Lyric: Yeah, you got a little too good actin' like a good guy

Rosé Chart History:

2021 01 On The Ground

2021 04 Gone

2024 01 Apt. (Rosé & Bruno Mars)

2024 09 Number One Girl

2024 01 Toxic Till The End

2024 04 3AM

2024 08 Gameboy

2024 10 Drinks Or Coffee

2024 11 Two Years

2024 18 Dance All Night

We get our first effort by a BLACKPINK soloist and it's the first of two in this #101-130 section for Rosé. As you can see above, this was still in the top 10 in my newest chart yesterday and it's December release date is what has stopped it from making the chart proper. 'gameboy' is a R&B influenced track based around the video game metaphor.

127. EARTHGANG feat. Tommy Newport - PUT IN WORK

Chart Run: 12-13-17-18 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =145

Lyric: Now you wanna kick it like judo

Earthgang's Chart History:

2019 01 Wells Fargo (J.I.D, Buddy, Earthgang & Guapdad 4000)

2019 02 Sacrifices (Earthgang, Smino, Saba & J. Cole)

2019 02 1993 (Buddy, Smino, Cozz, Earthgang, J.I.D & J. Cole)

2019 04 Swivel

2019 05 Stuck (feat. Arin Ray)

2019 19 Fields (feat. Malik)

2019 05 Down Bad (J.I.D, Bas, J. Cole, Earthgang & Young Nudy)

2020 11 Still Up (Earthgang & Reason)

2020 15 Options (Earthgang & Wale)

2022 10 All Eyes On Me

2022 04 Ghetto Gods

2022 09 Smoke Sum

2022 10 Amen (feat. Musiq Soulchild)

2022 17 Black Pearls (feat. Baby Tate)

2022 04 Don't Punk Me (J.I.D feat. Earthgang)

2023 10 Die Today

2024 12 Put In Work (feat. Tommy Newport)

2024 10 Bobby Boucher (feat. Benji)

Tommy Newport's Chart History:

2024 11 Red Sky (21 Savage, Tommy Newport & Mikky Ekko)

2024 12 Put In Work (Earthgang feat. Tommy Newport)

EARTHGANG were not able to match last year's 'Die Today' in bagging a top 100 position but they've racked up two hits landing just outside. The first of which is 'PUT IN WORK' which features Tommy Newport in his second feature on a song that peaked just outside the top 10 in my charts this year. It was unlucky to be released at the same time as some other big albums that were dominating my chart. This is very groovy and deserved a top 10 peak at the very least. They always find some off pockets and Johnny Venus on verse 2 is just so creative with the flows and makes this track addictive.

126. Kenia OS - Tortura

Chart Run: 18-7-14-14 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =126

Lyric: Bitch, I'm here like "Hello"

Kenia OS's Chart History:

2024 07 Tortura

I promised awardinary that I would join one of this years' BJSCs and this was my entry when I did. It didn't qualify which I thought was quite harsh as it's such a fun track. It's perfect for the summer but didn't end up sticking around long enough in my chart to see those months.

125. Chlöe - Boy Bye

Chart Run: 9-11-17-17 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =130

Lyric: You just gave a little while I gave you my all

Chlöe's Chart History:

2021 01 Have Mercy

2022 01 Treat Me

2022 10 Surprise

2022 12 For The Night (Chlöe & Latto)

2023 11 Pray It Away

2023 07 How Does It Feel (Chlöe & Chris Brown)

2023 05 Body Do

2023 19 Told Ya (Chlöe & Missy Elliott)

2024 09 Boy Bye

2024 05 Somebody

2024 13 Strawberry Lemonade

I thought this was a really interesting change of pace from Chlöe. Everything she has released prior is very R&B but this is just pure pop. Listening now, I probably should be ranking this a few places higher but it's certainly not worthy of top 100 so I won't be changing it.

2024 07 Down Bad

2024 05 Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?

2024 02 Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)

2024 13 But Daddy I Love Him

2024 15 So High School

The only track from side 2 of 'The Tortured Poets Department' to really make any impact on me and that was only after seeing it performed live. This is potentially Taylor at her cheesiest lyrically but I always have a soft spot for when she embraces the cringe. Even with the 'Grand Theft Auto' line, I really like the way she sings the refrain. The choppiness gives it a rap vibe and makes it very memorable. Don't worry any Taylor fans, she has plenty more to come.

123. Sabrina Carpenter - Good Graces

Chart Run: 12-16-(x3)-17-13-20 (6 weeks)

Lyric: Don't mistake my nice for naïve

2023 10 Lonesome

2023 13 Paris

2024 01 Espresso

2024 02 Please Please Please

2024 01 Taste

2024 01 Juno

2024 07 Bed Chem

2024 12 Good Graces

2024 has been Sabrina's year and that will be well-reflected in my top 100 but she also bags one entry in this section, with album track 'Good Graces'. I think your mileage with this one depends on whether or not you gel with the post-chorus. This track could work well as the litmus test on if you are going to enjoy 'Short n' Sweet', it has all the elements of the album: witty writing, a poppy hook and an irreverent tone.

2024 10 Bobby Boucher (Earthgang feat. Benji)

I definitely heard this last year when it was first released and thought nothing of it but hearing it again on the album release, I got hooked. Absolute earworm of a chorus and Johnny Venus plays around with his flows again, introducing some auto-tune to create something special on his verse.

Lola Young's Chart History:

2024 09 Like Him (Tyler, The Creator feat. Lola Young)

We finally reach a song that has charted official and it's one that I feel has a good chance of continuing it's run and re-peaking now the Christmas songs will disappear. Unfortunately, absentee fathers are a recurring theme across Hip-Hop music and we often hear song expressing the anger this causes. But it's painful hearing a song from the perspective of Tyler desperately wanting to understand who his father is. If you listen to the album, it's even more gut-wrenching to hear it after another song where Tyler's pregnant girlfriend has told him that it would be fine for him to be like his Dad and not to be in their child's life because they both grew up with single parents and 'came out fine'. There's so much in the simple lyric of 'Do I look like him' and this is probably the most effective song of the year at nailing the emotions. The outro from his mother telling Tyler that it's her fault that his Dad isn't in his life is heart-breaking

Armani Caesar's Chart History:

2024 12 Buffalo Kitchen Club (Benny The Butcher & Armani Caesar)

It's been a breakout year for Griselda member, Benny The Butcher, in my chart and he has two entries in the #101-130 section alongside two entries in the top 100. Featuring the Buzzjack filter's least favourite word, 'Buffalo Kitchen Club' also features fellow Griselda-alum Armani Caesar. Armani really kills her verse and I keep meaning to check out more of her music but I still haven't got around to it yet.

119. JADE - Midnight Cowboy

Chart Run: 7-11-14-18 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: 93

Lyric: Nothin' wrong with a little horseplay

Jade's Chart History:

2024 01 Angel Of My Dreams

2024 07 Midnight Cowboy

2024 07 Fantasy

JADE was always my favourite member of Little Mix and I was really excited to hear her solo stuff. She started off well and has a #1 hit to come in my top 100 but here two follow-up efforts will both be missing out on that region. A promotional single released between her two main singles, this is much more experimental and I'm not too surprised it didn't become a hit. Written with RAYE and with spoken interludes by Ncuti Gatwa, it's an overtly sex-positive track that fits in well with her outside-of-music persona.

2024 18 Judge Judy

2024 20 Balloon (feat. Doehcii)

2024 18 Thought I Was Dead (feat. ScHoolboy Q)

The lead single from Tyler's 'Chromakopia' album, 'Noid' didn't hit me fully on first listen but I've come to appreciate it much more. I would have liked another verse from Tyler but the two we get are great and the production is all over the place in the best possible way. It's certainly an experience to listen to but there's a couple better on the album.

117. ROSÉ - 3AM

Chart Run: 4-5-7- (3+ weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =96

Lyric: The one I pretty talk and ugly-cry to

Rosé's Chart History:

2021 01 On The Ground

2021 04 Gone

2024 01 Apt. (Rosé & Bruno Mars)

2024 09 Number One Girl

2024 01 Toxic Till The End

2024 04 3AM

2024 08 Gameboy

2024 10 Drinks Or Coffee

2024 11 Two Years

2024 18 Dance All Night

The reason why this is an extended top 130 when it's usually only 120 is because 2024 has been such a competitive year in my charts. I create a points chart to help me decided on my chart and usually if a song reaches 40 points they are near enough guaranteed to be in my top 100, but this year there were 110 songs reaching that tally, including this one by Rosé. One that the guiding factors has to be recency and that's the reason why this has missed out. It's had a brilliant start in my chart so far with 3 weeks in the top 7 and would have made it if they album had been released a few weeks earlier. We're probably already at the point where these songs would have been in my top 100 in most years. This is certainly helped by being track 2 on her album allowing it to make an impact on me early.

I love eternal sunshine, brilliant choice for #1 album of the year

Hearts on the Run, So High School and Good Graces are my fave of your song selections thus far!

I remember the top 2 from last year for you, both good songs.

Here are the albums I like from your list:

1. Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

3. Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet

4. Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well

5. Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA

8. Taylor Swift - THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT

9. Charli xcx - BRAT

10. Kendrick Lamar - GNX

11. beabadoobee - This Is How Tomorrow Moves

12. Chappell Roan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess

17. Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)

19. Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism

25. Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

Jordan Ward's Chart History:

2024 10 head.rap (Saba & No I.D. feat. Madison McFerrin, Ogi & Jordan Ward)

Rapper Saba and producer No I.D. continued to tease their new upcoming collaborative album with two new tracks this year. They were both good but the strongest was definitely 'head, rap'. A jazzy, infectious track, it's certainly a more upbeat look at the hair of African-Americans than Tyler's 'I Killed You'. Ogi and Jordan Ward both sound lush on the chorus

115. JADE - Fantasy

Chart Run: 7-10-14-17-19 (5 weeks)

Official Peak: 52

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =116

Lyric: Think of the time that we lost tryna be who we're not

Jade's Chart History:

2024 01 Angel Of My Dreams

2024 07 Midnight Cowboy

2024 07 Fantasy

This disco-inspired track served as the 2nd single from Jade's upcoming album and was unable to reach the heights of the lead single, missing the official top 40 and only spending one week in the top 100. I like it but I think it feels more like an old post-album single that the radio would eat up rather than a pre-album release. I have hopes that she will be able to turn it around and get another big hit.

2021 05 De Una Vez

2021 14 Baila Conmigo (Selena Gomez & Rauw Alejandro)

2021 16 Selfish Love (DJ Snake & Selena Gomez)

2022 16 My Mind & Me

2023 04 Single Soon

2024 04 Love On

That chart run suggests a song that should be comfortably making my top 100 but I don't think I've actually given this a listen once since it fell out of my chart and I have completely forgotten how it goes. Listening again now and I still like it but it feels like a much older release than earlier this year. I don't think anyone would say it's prime Selena Gomez and I'm not too disappointed to leave it out of my top 100.

113. Chlöe - Strawberry Lemonade

Chart Run: 16-13-13-13-18 (5 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =124

Lyric: Started at the bottom, now I'm at the top

Chlöe's Chart History:

2021 01 Have Mercy

2022 01 Treat Me

2022 10 Surprise

2022 12 For The Night (Chlöe & Latto)

2023 11 Pray It Away

2023 07 How Does It Feel (Chlöe & Chris Brown)

2023 05 Body Do

2023 19 Told Ya (Chlöe & Missy Elliott)

2024 09 Boy Bye

2024 05 Somebody

2024 13 Strawberry Lemonade

I was a bit anxious going into this sophomore solo album from Chlöe as I've found that her work has been largely suffering from diminishing returns after the iconic debut single of 'Have Mercy'. And being released on the same day as an album I was highly anticipating ('This Is How Tomorrow Moves') certainly didn't help but in the end I was pleasantly surprised by how solid it was. It felt really focused and I actually prefer it to her debut. However, it doesn't have too much representation in this list as it got a bit lost in a busy time in my chart. 'Strawberry Lemonade' is a stand-out but still missed out on my weekly top 10. The poppier moments are where the album really shines and this is a good example of that.

112. Ashe - Cherry Trees

Chart Run: 6-12-12-17 (4 weeks)

Official Peak: n/a

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =116

Lyric: So glad you look happy, but I wish you'd look at men

Ashe's Chart History:

2020 06 Moral Of The Story

2022 04 Not Mad Anymore

2022 11 Me Without You

2022 01 Another Man's Jeans

2022 07 Hope You're Not Happy

2022 01 Angry Woman

2022 04 Shower With My Clothes On

2022 10 Emotional

2022 19 omw

2024 02 Running Out Of Time

2024 05 I Wanna Love You (But I Don't)

2024 20 I Hope You Die First

2024 06 Cherry Trees

2024 11 Please Don't Fall In Love With Me

2024 05 Hornet's Nest

2024 01 Pushing Daisies (Ashe & Suki Waterhouse)

Ashe released one of my albums of the year and an initial highlight was 'Cherry Trees'. It didn't end up doing enough to reach the top 100 but it's still a great track. The build up is great but it's the release on the bridge with the guitar strings that really makes the song for me.

111. Tate McRae - 2 hands

Chart Run: 6-6-10-16-20 (5 weeks)

Official Peak: 08

End-Of Year Points Chart Finish: =96

Lyric: And I already got that bag for free, but if you bought it then, that's sweet

Tate McRae's Chart History:

2021 02 Feel Like Shit

2022 03 She's All I Wanna Be

2022 01 What Would You Do?

2022 04 What's Your Problem?

2022 05 Don't Come Back

2022 06 You're So Cool

2022 13 Hate Myself

2022 12 Uh Oh

2023 01 Greedy

2023 01 Exes

2023 07 Think Later

2023 08 Hurt My Feelings

2023 11 Guilty Conscience

2023 05 We're Not Alike

2023 19 Plastic Palm Trees

2023 15 Messier

2023 19 Calgary

2024 06 It's Ok I'm Ok

2024 06 2 Hands

Another one that's been hampered by it's late release date, '2 hands' is already looking like it's going to be a forgotten official top 10 hit. It's another really solid effort from Tate and does it's job in getting me excited for the album. Although, I usually love Tate's videos but I think the concept for this one doesn't really work and it ends up being a bit of a mess.
