2024 12 Pink Pony Club

Chappell Roan's EOY History:

2024 73 Femininomenon

Despite it being one of the biggest hits of the year, I was never able to truly get into 'Good Luck, Babe!' but I did find lots of love on her debut album 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess'. And what a way to start the album with 'Femininomenon'! It's one of the boldest swings you can imagine. It's messy, it's brash and it perfecly sums up who Chappell is and the ethos of the album. It has a truly marmite chorus that I think mostly everyone will hate on the first listen but it really manages to wear you down when you've heard the rest of the project and you tune in to the vibe. Having gone back and listened to her first EP 'School Nights', I can only imagine the whiplash any fans of hers from that EP must have experienced when they listened to this album

72. Flo Milli - Never Lose Me

1st Single from 'Fine Ho, Stay'

Flo Milli's Chart History:

2022 19 We Not Humping (Monaleo & Flo Milli)

2024 04 Never Lose Me

2024 16 Talk My Shit (Childish Gambino feat. Amaarae & Flo Milli)

Flo Milli's EOY History:

2024 72 Never Lose Me

Flo Milli got her breakthrough hit early last year with 'Never Lose Me' and it's easy to hear why it caught on. It definitely has some Doja Cat influence with it's vibey, sing-song style of Hip-Hop but what elevates it above other similar tracks is just how catchy it is. It's melody is perfect for singing along and the lyrics are just the right amount of playful to not be too explicit. She certainly does the beat more justice than Bayface Ray and 42 Dugg did on the original use of the instrumental.

71. Billie Eilish - LUNCH

2024 02 Lunch

2024 11 L'Amour De Ma Vie

Billie Eilish's EOY History:

2019 77 Bad Guy

2024 71 Lunch

As you can see above, Billie has never been a consistent presence in my chart with this being only her 2nd EOY placement. However, I was very impressed when I listened to her original three charting entries from the album when I was catching up with the official chart. Usually, she's released at least one song that I didn't that was made me not want to check out her albums, but 'LUNCH' really grabbed me on first listen and the other two were both decent. I ended up checking the full album out and enjoyed it (#25 in my album chart), but my highlight remained to be the lead single. This is just fun in a way that her music usually isn't. Both sonically, and visually with the video, the song does remind me of something that would have been an old Apple advert  This is the first top 2 hit of the year to drop-out.

2024 70 Bit Bitter

Despite her not realising anything to streaming services in 2024, I managed to sneak in Maisie and my favourite album of the decade, 'The Good Witch' in somehow. 'Bit Bitter' is only available from the Record Store Day exclusive release of 'The Good Witch' deluxe tracks and pretty much all my listens have been through playing the vinyl in full. I've had to link to a dodgy, low-quality rip somebody's uploaded to YouTube as that's the only way to hear it outside of the vinyl. Reaching #2 and making this chart is a very impressive achievement based on that. I LOVE this track and wish that Maisie would add it to streaming. This would have been a EOY Top 10 contender had it have been. The staccato delivery at the end of verse 2 is the catchiest moment of any song this year. It has lived rent-free in my head since April.

2024 69 Born To Be

Landing at everybody's favourite position this year is ITZY with 'BORN TO BE'. Ever since they fist reached my charts in 2020, they've had a remarkably consistent knack of racking up #1 hits (7 overall) but, despite this one missing out on top spot, it was part of ITZY's biggest takeover of my charts and their strongest era last January. All five members were simultaneously charting solo efforts alongside their 5 group efforts from the EP. I was devastated to miss out on their London show to support this EP as I know it would have been epic. The actual song is a good one from them, it has great production and a memorable hook. After coming so close with 'LOCO' in 2021, this might just be the year where they bag themselves their first EOY Top 10 placing.

Ashe's EOY History:

2022 09 Another Man's Jeans

2022 42 Shower With My Clothes On

2022 46 Angry Woman

2022 75 Hope You're Not Happy

2024 68 I Wanna Love You (But I Don't)

The first of four entries this year from Ashe, matching what she also achieved in 2022. I had a ticket to see her in 2023 but she ended up having to cancel that tour due to mental health issues. After that, it was radio silence from her for a good year-and-a-half so when she announced she was returning to release music, I didn't know what to expect. The lead single proved to be great and is still to come and, in the end, I think she's comeback stronger, with this album, 'Willson' blowing her first two out of the water. This was released alongside 'I Hope you die first' as the joint 2nd singles and neither fully hit me straight away. However, the album saw both of them grow on me massively. This has such a powerful chorus that sticks with you long after you've finished listening to it. I tend to lean towards the more upbeat tracks so you know a ballad must be strong if it's making this list.

Hi Lewis :hi: great to see Ari topping your albums of course *.* have just been catching up on your song countdown and these are my favourites to appear so far:

124. Taylor Swift - So High School

119. JADE - Midnight Cowboy

118. Tyler, The Creator - Noid

115. JADE - Fantasy

110. Kendrick Lamar - reincarnated

109. Chappell Roan - Pink Pony Club

107. Childish Gambino feat. Jorja Smith & Amaarae - In The Night

90. Camila Cabello feat. Playboi Carti - I LUV IT

88. Dua Lipa - Illusion

83. Charli xcx feat. Ariana Grande - Sympathy is a knife

78. Ariana Grande - true story

Taylor's 'cringe' lyrical moments can be quite hit-or-miss for me but agreed that 'So High School' is a good kind of cringe

I'm so impressed with JADE's solo launch so far *.* not long to wait for 'IT Girl' now, yay <3

I agree that GNX is not quite a top tier Kendrick album but still reliably good stuff from him and 'reincarnated' was a highlight for me too

'Pink Pony Club' was introduced to me way back in 2020 (thanks to Andrew sending it to BJSC, ahead of his time there) but took until this year to properly click, agreed that it's a really good single to show off what Chappell is all about as an artist.

'I LUV IT' has proven so divisive indeed (even making the Hate chart on here *_*) and I was a bit WTF when I first heard it, but it grew on me and I'm in the positive camp too (minus the feature :kink:)

I can't wait to hear what JADE has in store for us with 'IT Girl'. Very close now!

'reincarnated' is definitely a highlight from 'GNX'. I couldn't believe when I saw that the pitchfork review apparently called it "unlistenable"

Glad to see some support for 'I LUV IT' even if the feature is awful.

Thank you :D

2022 94 Treat Me

2023 61 Body Do

2023 87 How Does It Feel (Chlöe & Chris Brown)

2024 67 Somebody

Chlöe makes her sole appearance in this year's top 100 with 'Somebody' landing at #67. This is the closing track to the album and talk about saving the best for last! She's really stumbled onto some catchy hooks here with the pre-chorus, the actually chorus and the post-chorus all being earworms and are sure to get stuck in your head. Again, it's a poppier moment where she shines even if this a lot slower than say a 'Have Mercy' or 'Body Do'. Chlöe seems to have taken some inspiration from her sister in the visualiser with it giving strong Ariel vibes. She's actually been beaten by her sister this year as she is still to come.

The second appearance from Camila and a song which a sonically not too dissimilar, but MUCH better feature than her last. I think the panning that the 'C,XOXO' album received from some areas was very harsh but I think a lot of it came from it looking like she was being inauthentic and trying to copy artists that are 'cooler'. However, I think had she released this as the lead instead, it wouldn't have done any better in the charts but I think the general consensus would have been different. 'baby pink' feels like it's genuinely innovative and on the front-foot of a new trend, helped by having an up-and-coming, not yet mainstream artist like Eem Triplin as the feature. Everything about this one works for me.

Continuing the run of album tracks today is 'Hornet's Nest' from 'Willson'. This wasn't an instant highlight for me but I could tell it was going to be one that grows on me and grow on me it did. It feels like a song that is built for live performances as it builds throughout the verses before the release of the 2nd half of the chorus, That's why it didn't hit me straight away, the 'we'll drink the arsenic' line didn't feel as impactful as it should but I've been won over on it by now.

With 'BORN TO BE' being released while Lia was on a break from the band, I wasn't expecting her to get her own solo track but I'm delighted that she did. It is her only appearance on the EP (although they released re-recorded versions of all of the group tracks with her included after she rejoined). At the time of her break, Lia was my favourite member of ITZY so I had high hopes for this one. Although as it's ranked the 2nd lowest, you can see that I wasn't fully satisfied. I appreciate the fact that this is probably the most ambitious of the tracks but it certainly sounds the least like ITZY out of them all. I do look fonder on this one as time progressed and it did manage to overtake one of the ones above it in this list in my weekly charts late into their runs. I do really love this, the vocals on verse 2 are particularly lush, but I think I would love it more if I didn't have different expectations of what it was going to sound like going into it.

With the year she's had, it's surprising we've had to wait this long to see our first glimpse of Taylor in the top 100. As you might be able to tell with it's chart run, 'Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?' is one of of the main benefactors of the Eras Tour having only spent a solitary week at #18 before my tour date. It's probably one of the more melodramatic songs she's written, especially the infamous lyric I've shared above, but that's what makes it such an anthem on her stadium tour. You just want to scream this song alongside thousands of other people.

Let's finish today with one of the songs that defined 2024. The Kendrick/Drake beef will go down as one of the most talked about moments of last year and, unlike the most notorious rap beefs of all-time (Biggie vs Tupac, Nas vs Jay-Z), there was a clear victor here. What makes 'Not Like Us' so devilish and, in turn, the deathblow, is that's it's a legitimate pop song. Without any beef associated this would still be massive in the clubs. It's a tactic Drake knows well from his previous feud-ender 'Back To Back'. 'a minorrrrrrrrrrrrr' and 'Certified pedophiles' are going to lines that will follow Drake around forevermore, even if it's calling him 'Malibu's most wanted' that makes me laugh the most. It's not the lyrical putdown's that win the war, it's the catchphrases and Kendrick getting everyone singing the simple line 'they not like us' is why there was never a way back for Drake. The pop-out show where he united members of the Bloods and Crips and performed this song five consecutive times was just the icing on the cake.

The second appearance from Charli this year is 'Talk talk'. I've already seen this appear in a couple of EOY charts in it's remix form but I'm not actually a fan of the remix at all and it's certainly the original that has earned it's place here. The song is a cute story of her being at the NME Music Awards with future fiancée but at the time just text buddies, George Daniel and hoping that he'd come over and talk to her. I think the original is structured perfectly with the verses building upon her nervousness and awkwardness before we get the explosion where it all spills out in the outro. Having it as the hook, which the remix does, just doesn't have the same effect for me.

Chaeryeong had been the member of ITZY that had made the last impact on me during the group's releases so I felt like I had no idea what to expect going into this solo track. It ended up being a very pleasant surprise. It starts off quite disco-y but takes you on a journey throughout. The 'forever mi-i-i-iiiine already mi-i-i-iiiine' part might be the catchiest moment in any of the solos (although 'Runaway' would have something to say about that) and she sounds great. Very funky little song! I've linked to the video above but, remember, like with all of these ITZY solo videos, it is only half of the song. I almost like this version better in some ways, it leaves you wanting more. It ends with what is the bridge on the full track and I feel like it sounds more like an outro.

My favourite song from Kacey this year comes from the deluxe version of her 'Deeper Well' album and is the Leon Bridges feature 'Superbloom'. She hasn't quite managed to live up to the highs of 'Breadwinner' landing in my top 20 in 2021 but I think she's been a victim of having an album I loved so much as a whole that the individual moments didn't stand out as much. Just from the instrumental intro I could tell I was going to love this song. She's been nailing it with the slower tracks but I do love when she releases a more upbeat song like this. It had strong 'Star-Crossed' vibes and I adore that album so that's probably why I've navigated towards it. I've not been too familiar with Leon but she sounds great on his verse and the moments where they sing in unison are heavenly. I can't believe she held this one back for the deluxe, this should be the lead single!

There's plenty artist who you can claim that 2024 was their year (Charli, Chappel, Kendrick all come to mind) but I think that there call only be one true answer and that is Sabrina Carpenter. 'Emails I Can't Send' is easily one of my albums of the decade so far and I've been begging for Sabrina to properly break through after 'Nonsense' and 'Feather' shown slowly increasing signs of doing so. But even I didn't see this level of domination coming! 'Bed Chem' is the current single and I can see why but I was hoping for 'Juno'. This has everything you'd want from a Sabrina track though, humorous lyrics, catchy tune and a dollop of self-awareness. I've already seen Sabrina live twice in 2023 (one on her own tour and once as an opening act for BLACKPINK at Hyde Park) and I can't wait to see her again on the arena tour. I had to buy expensive VIP tickets as they were the only ones left by the time I got through so she better be good

The next Ariana track to drop out as we reach the half-way stage of her entries is 'bye'. Helped by being the first proper song on the album (after the Intro), this ended up being the album track that could make the official chart due to the 3-track rule. It's a discoy track produced to perfection by Max Martin & Ilya, both of whom always create gold when working with Ari. The synth hits are brilliant and who doesn't love a nice upbeat break-up song.
