Dua Lipa reached all the way to #2 in last year's EOY chart and, while she hasn't been able quite match that height again, she's followed it up with 'Training Season' becoming the highest ranking tack from the 'Radical Optimism' era lading at #24. This is a really funky track that bops along nicely without ever having the crazy dance section like 'Houdini'. It constantly sounds fresh and hasn't even hinted at getting old for me yet. I'm very excited to hear this one in a stadium setting in the summer. I was quite shocked to see it finish so high in my last.fm chart, especially when it was from an album that didn't get spun anywhere near as much as some others this year, but I won't complain at it doing so.

Olivia Rodrigo's only entry this year comes from the lead single to the deluxe version of her 'GUTS' album, 'obsessed'. Olivia's rockier songs have always been a favourite of mine so this single choice was right up my street. I think she sells these songs so well and I think a huge part of that is because she's not afraid to write true to her age, even if it doesn't feel fully right hearing the word 'butthurt' in a song. The 'SOUR' album stood out from the crowd and became the definitive teenage album because it dealt with the topics that matter to people at a young age and spoke about them truthfully. While it's obviously exaggerated for effect, the feelings of inadequacy and insecurity and universal and are only heightened when you're at a younger age. With Olivia, you really believe her when she's singing these type of songs and that's one of the reasons why I think she's become so huge. I have no doubt that this would have finished higher if I had seen the GUTS tour last year as planned. After the Co-Op's shenanigans and the long wait for an update, I was sulking a bit and probably didn't go back to Olivia's music as much as I should have done throughout the year.

If you can't get on board with the sample of Jason Mewes from Dogma and Kanye's inexplicable constant repetition of said line, you're really not going to like this song. Ty sets us off with a solid hook and Freddie finishes the track with a great verse that gives the song some credibility and Kanye comes through just repeating "beautiful, big titty, butt-naked women just don't fall out the sky, you know?" :lol: It's so stupid that you either despise it or you come through the other side and end up in the so-bad-it's-good thought process. Freddie even calls-back to it in his verse but somehow makes it sound cool which was very impressive. The original version of this had a Quavo verse instead and some of his adlibs still remain on track. I think replacing him with Freddie is what saved the track though. An ok Quavo verse wouldn't have been enough for me to get on board with Kanye's divisive 'verse'. As it is though, it's a banger. You'll never forget the Dogma sample ever again. Kanye gets his highest landing of the 2020s while Freddie Gibbs still has another song to come.

After radio silence throughout the whole of 2023, Ashe finally came back in June last year with 'Running Out Of Time', the lead single from her 3rd album. Despite being held off top spot by LISA's 'Rockstar', it ended up becoming the defining song of my Summer and finishes a few places higher than that one did in this countdown. Usually when an album is released, I move on from the earlier singles and chart some new stuff but this was a rarity in managing to re-enter after the album was released, even climbing back into the top 10. I really enjoy the guitar on this one and it helps the chorus feel so euphoric. It sounds perfect in the sun and was a big part of the holiday to Bilbao. Ashe still has one more song to appear.

This deserved so much better. 'You Go Your Way' is my favourite solo track from any of Little Mix so far and I was devastated that it couldn't even reach the top 40. It feels like Perrie put some real work into it, promoting it heavy on release week and filming a brilliant, one-take music video where she performs full choreography; despite previously admitting how she didn't enjoy dancing in the early stages of Little Mix. I think this has a pretty strong hook, the production is fun and her vocals are on point. I really don't know where it went wrong with this one. I'd happily rank it up there with the group's classics.

The final, and highest placed, Charli song for 2024 is her only official #1 single of the year, 'Guess'. I've linked to the remix version above as I do enjoy both of versions of the track. I've credited it just solo because it was that version that I was listening to the most when charting it but, over the past couple of months, I've found myself going back more to the Billie Eilish remix. I wasn't sure she sounded right on my first few listens but I'm completely on board now. 'Guess' is potentially one of the more frivolous songs from BRAT, hidden away on the remix and without any sort of deep message. However, it is the most fun moment on the album, in my opinion, with The Dare coming in clutch with the production.

Earlier on, I described Eminem's 'Brand New Dance' as devilish for it's teasing of Christopher Reeve but Freddie Gibbs obviously heard that and thought, 'I'll show you devilish'. 'It's Your Anniversary' flips Tony! Toni! Toné!'s soulful, romantic ballad 'Anniversary' on it's head to instead refer to a mother tearfully mourning on the anniversary of the death of their rapper son which Freddie has 'killed'. Unfortunately, I've had to link to a dodgy re-upload that doesn't sound great above as the song was removed from YouTube and other streaming services as Freddie never bothered to clear the sample. Luckily, it was still available to purchase and download off his website so I had to spend ACTUALLY MONEY on a song in 2024 to make sure I could continue to listen to it. It's that's not commitment, I don't know what is. This is still on repeat for me and was still riding high in the top 3 in my final chart of 2024. This certainly had potential to be a few places higher had it been released before November.

Just like last year. I'm making a post about Jennie's EOY entry on her birthday so Happy Birthday again Jennie! 'Mantra' is another massive bop from her and it was great to see it enter the top 40 and stick around for 5 weeks in the top 100. If it wasn't for 'APT.' coming out the following week and absolutely smashing it, this would have been the best result for a BLACKPINK solo track. It's not the most complex song of the year but it delivers exactly what is promises. It's a fun 'bad-bitch' anthem with the right levels of cockiness and braggy lyrics. The only issue is that it's too short.

 

After a day off tomorrow, I'll be back on Saturday to countdown the the last section before the top 10.

The highest placed song from Ashe is not actually from her album and is instead a standalone single released a few months after 'Willson, 'Pushing Daisies'. This is a collaboration with her friend, English multi-hyphenate Suki Waterhouse who Ashe credits as being the person who inspired her to get back into music and signwriting after her hiatus. I'm still not sure how this ended up being so huge in my chart because I didn't like Suki's voice on my first listen and I'm still not a massive fan of her verse. But the chorus has never left my head and when they sign in unison it actually songs great. The song just radiates such a positive vibe, despite the not-so-bright lyrics, that I can't help but bop along to it. We're in a run of three songs that have all done well to end up this high with Q4 releases and this one is still in my most recent chart.

There's a lot of yearly-accolades that this position has awarded this song, it's the highest placed track that didn't reach #1 in my chart (held off by 'Espresso' on all three weeks), it's the highest-placed Hip-Hop song and it's the highest placed song by a male artist. Not a bad result for a song that, on paper, sounds like a disaster. 2024 wasn't a great year for Canadian rappers, but bbno$ bucked the trend with a track with a potentially overbearing sample of Chic's 'Le Freak' and a YouTuber in the music video. I think we're all used to the modern trend of music fully relying on an old sample for nostalgia purposes while offering nothing new, well bbno$ has shown them how to do it right. Sabrina brought fun pop music back to the mainstream this year and it's a shame that bbno$ couldn't do the same for rap with this.

For whatever reason, Bruno Mars has been someone who never really clicked with me. 'Finesse' managed to breakout for me but there's nothing else of his discography I would ever go back to. So when it was announced that Rosé's big comeback single was going to be a collaboration with him, it did dampen my excitement a tad. When we finally got to listen it, I was surprised. I'd always associated Rosé with the slower, more ballad-y area of pop music (which the album sounds a lot more alligned with) but this was a punky, exciting slice of brash pop that didn't follow any of the recent trends. I think everyone was taken back by it's sound and I'm delighted that it has ended up leading to a proper, worldwide phenomenon. Leaving YG for their solo careers have been the best thing the girls have done. There's no way that YG would have let them release anything like this or give us a whole album like Rosé has and Lisa soon will. This has beat the #15 position of 'On The Ground' but I'm sure this would have been in my top 10 had it released earlier.

A reimagination of Brandy & Monica's classic 1998 hit of the same name, 'the boy is mine' was the obvious choice for the third single even if it wasn't my preferred choice. However, the music video completely sold it to me and saw it bag Ariana her 27th #1 hit in my charts. Ariana as Catwoman, yes please! I think that late 90s/early 00s was the last great time period for R&B music and I think Ariana would have absolutely slayed in that time with her insane vocal ability so it was great to hear her embrace that era on this song. Getting Brandy & Monica on board for the remix was pretty iconic and helped it gain an official top 40 peak but it's the solo version that I love the most.

I did give this a spin when it was first released in December 2023 and thought it was rubbish, but I was already obsessed by my second listen in January. Taking on the role of Regina George after Rachel McAdams in huge shoes to fill, but I feel like Reneé did about as good as anyone could possibly do and was one of the best parts of the 2024 musical remake. Megan perfectly understood the assignment on this song too. Her verse keeps on message with the song and sprinkles in just enough witty bars and flow changes to match the playful vibe but avoid it from feeling like a cashgrab. I think most featured rappers would have just phoned it in and not put in any effort to their verse. I did end up listening to Reneé's' 'Snow Angel' album and really enjoyed it so expect her to do well in my chart when she comes back with new music.

At the unlucky spot of just missing out on the top 10 this year is Madison Beer with '15 MINUTES'. She does have a song in the top 10 so it's not all bad news for her. This spend it's opening two weeks at #1 behind JADE's 'Angel Of My Dreams' before finally overtaking to become a #1 itself. This certainly build on the sound of 'Made You Mine' and even references back to it in the lyrics. I'm thinking that we're going to get a full album of this type of dance-y/indie-sh style of pop and I am fully here for it. The little instrumental break on here is godly and her vocals are some of her best. I had kinda forgotten how good this was, I think it's going straight back on my playlists now.

APT., Mantra, Guess, the boy is mine, You Go Your Way :wub: the latter feels really underrated to me! 15 MINUTES is good too, although it's all about Make You Mine for me!
