I'd missed Circa Waves being on a dance song! Giving it a listen now, it's sounding quite good - Tinlicker certainly aren't afraid to work with non-conventional featured artists.

Tinlicker certainly bring out the best in their guest performers, it's good to see those from a more indie background working with them

 

Happy to see two of my song contest entries in the last couple of sections (Alphaville were my entry to the first retro contest) - I'm delighted with how well Calva Louise did in Unknown Pleasures, its blend of genres seemed to fit there and I'm not sure if it would have fared so well in BJSC which I originally had in mind.

there's often only a limited voter base for that sort of thing in BJSC so may've not quite made the top 20 there, glad I entered in time to find this song anyhow

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Recommencing the rundown with Ben Böhmer, 'Best Life' led his latest album cycle with one of his more pop-leaning efforts though very much keeping to his brand of electronic music which made it a great starting point for the project, however he still has one song remaining. A bit of a surprise hit comes next from Alan Walker, who had been absent from the year-end list since 2020. However, ‘Barcelona’ was the kind of radio-friendly pop bop we could actually very much do with, being much-assisted by Ina Wroldsen on songwriting and vocal duties. At #83 we have a breakthrough hit for Valtos, the track ‘1990’ was one of the year’s best finds off the Buzzjack Song Contest being a crossover between traditional Celtic music with modern electronica was always going to be intriguing to me. Valtos may appear again next year as I intend to check out their recently released album but this was their only hit for the year. It’s all gone Pete Tong at #82, taking a surprising amount of time for him to get a proper hit here but ‘Heat Rising’ is what did it for me having peaked at the very tail end of last year. The track has hints of his usual ‘classic Ibiza meets orchestral’ sound but is actually an original song. Meanwhile one of the biggest names in melodic techno now Anyma managed an eventual second hit for me this year with ‘Pictures of You’ - he previously had a hit with his take on ‘Running Up That Hill’ making this his first original song to impact.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

One of the year’s biggest discoveries for me in my search for rock and metal to get into had to be Kalandra, who eventually scored three big hits in the year although ‘Ghosts’ was too recent for inclusion, ‘Are You Ready?’ charts here at #80 - their real biggie to come later. A classic piano house inspired tune up at #79 which was the belated first hit for Wh0, the song actually having come out in 2020 but a recent discovery - ‘Believer’ features the power vocals of Kathy Brown who you may recall from her BJSC winning feature. Another genre switch at #78 as we have a piano instrumental piece from Tony Ann. He has been doing a series of compositions surrounding the zodiac, with the stand-out being ‘Gemini’ so bonus points to anyone of you with that star sign haha. Back to the classic house sound at #77 from Jengi who you may recall from his huge hit ‘Bel Mercy’ however this track ‘Da Feeling’ has a rather different vibe and features a rap taken from Sweet Tee’s 90s hit. One of the biggest new trends of the year has certainly been afro house with two songs of the genre becoming a big global hit and making my year-end top 100. The first of these comes from MoBlack and friends being a remix of the Salif Keita song ‘Yamore’, a very vibey track that ought to have crossed over in the UK too but alas it’s in a foreign language so was always unlikely to happen.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

One of the other big BJSC discoveries of the year up next, it was the second post-rock track to hit it big for me following Blackshape from earlier, coming from Jadakissnia’s Sadness and their track from 2019 which is a rather emotional piece even with its few lyrics being fairly incomprehensible. At #74 we welcome back John Summit who had the rather interesting idea of essentially having Sub Focus remix his own song… within his own song. It works though, particularly the latter DnB section. A lovely bit of vocal trance coming up at #73 from Factor B who out-did himself with ‘Everywhere To Me’, currently his biggest hit which was one of the first releases he made following his wife’s passing. At #72 we have the breakthrough hit for German techno producer Schrotthagen - ‘Pain in my Heart’ has held up very well into 2025 as well so could very well make two year-end lists being a right thumper also with a very well-made video. Following that we have a more standard house tune in ‘Happiness’ which served as the first release from supergroup Lovequest made up of Shadow Child, Doorly and Jake Shears. Certainly great to hear Jake singing on more dancey beats again and this one is certainly the strongest of their efforts so far.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Coming in at #70 it’s another big energy trance anthem from Ben Gold who also gave vocalist Bo Bruce a belated second big hit a decade after she featured for Gareth Emery. Next up Alok proves again that he can only get hits by obvious sampling efforts but hey if it works… The track is a modern update of ‘The Love You Seek’ with a hint of ‘On The Beach’ thrown in to keep things interesting. A random garage hit next at #68 being the sole hit so far for Skeptic, it is a cover version of ‘Chain of Fools’ which was a song I hadn’t thought about in years so is pretty much good as new. The first of a handful of appearances for Fat Dog at #67 is indeed their first single release in ‘King of the Slugs’, a 7-minute epic which rightfully was the biggest BJSC hit of the year although follow-ups proved to have more replay value in the end. Following this we have house duo Leftwing : Kody who have been fairly consistent over the past five years in making decent tunes although ‘Delirious’ had a fair bit more going for it than the usual, being put out on Patrick Topping’s label clearly meant they had to work a bit harder for it.

Topping out at #65 for Ben Böhmer we have 'Rust', unsurprisingly it was my fave of his from the new album as sonically it is very much in the melodic house style that got me into him in the first place, it's a very chill piece. Up next was a find from Cow’s personal chart being one of his obscure trance finds from Nik Andre, appropriately titled ‘Opera’ a classical-inspired trance instrumental is always going to have some appeal for me and this does it very well. At #63 the hits keep coming for Nora En Pure a decade after her breakthrough, ‘Freyja’ was certainly the most interesting of her efforts this year with its tense string section giving it the edge over other fairly samey releases. Another orchestral trance track from a lesser-known name in Ruslan Radriges up next at #62, ‘Phoenix’ is assisted by Julia Violin because you may as well put what instrument you play in your name as a selling point now. Something a bit different at #61 now coming from Jalen Ngonda which stood out on a random skim through NMF for sounding like it was a lost soul classic from the 70s, it later got A-listed on Radio 2 which probably means I’m officially old for enjoying it this much but worth a listen if you’re intrigued.

In at #60 we have another Anjunabeats regular Luttrell who put out another album this year, the easy highlight of which was ‘Space’, which saw him go into piano house albeit with the atmospheric production typically associated with the record label. French producer Rebeka Warrior appears next with a song in her native language too albeit the vocals performed by French drag race star Paloma (the song also titled after her), a great synthwave-inspired production there. At #58 we have Duke Dumont who put out his best song in years, with the assistance of Clementine Douglas on vocals this ought to have been the song that brought him back into the mainstream prominence but alas it had to remain painfully underrated. The first of the 2024 Danaeviia BJSC entries drops in the rundown at #57 coming from Talking to Shadows, it was a very lucky YouTube find as it was the most obscure of my entries in a long time but it is an excellent 90s shoegaze-inspired rock ballad - the sheer low streaming count this has seems criminal. Meanwhile at #56 we say hello to Clementine again this time featuring on an actual hit single from The Blessed Madonna with one of the year’s better produced dance hits in ‘Happier’ - another track very much helped by the vocal performance here.

At #55 a bit of an unexpected pivot for AmyElle going down a more classic progressive trance direction with ‘Silver Lining’ which naturally turned into her biggest hit yet here, simply a lush instrumental piece. Another rock song next at #54 from guitarist Sophie Lloyd with the title track of her album release ‘Imposter Syndrome’ albeit the real stand out feature comes from the guest vocalist Lzzy Hale really belting it out here. At #53 the much-belated first big hit for Caravan Palace, long after their duo of BJSC entries were minor hits one of their new releases ‘Mirrors’ made a great first impression off one of my YouTube hunting sessions. A fun song which continues their very retro inspired production. Meanwhile a very big song at #52 coming from Ben Hemsley, ‘Tidal’ would surely be much higher up here if it had longer than 11 weeks to rack up the sales. It’s a big classic-trance inspired anthem and for those of you who love the genre the 10-minute version is essential listening. Hemsley will certainly be a big contender later on with his earlier #1 hit of the year. Just above we had an unexpected hit off the Maceo Plex album, ironically titled ‘You Don’t Have To Wait’ as it took a fair while to reach its peak. Unlike some of his previous hits this production is more of a vibe although with plenty of movement and vocal hooks to keep it interesting.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Holiday followed by a busy work week but we are now back and re-commencing in the top 50 and still hopefully on track to complete the rundown before February.
Starting at #50 we have Porter Robinson with what was the much-awaited lead single to his third album. It was ultimately my least favourite of his albums so far, however 'Cheerleader' was a standout piece to lead the new era with. Being a fairly new sound but still very much him stylistically. It was great to hear his raw vocal here too for once as great as the heavy vocal processing was on previous work.
At #49 it's the breakthrough track for rising French house DJ Selena Faider. 'Under My Feet' lifts heavily from the 70s classic 'I Feel The Earth Move' from Carole King, a rather inspired sample choice there and one I'm surprised hasn't been used much before given its strong piano line, giving it a fresh new house groove.
We finally get our final Eurovision klaxon at #48 coming from Norwegian folk-metal band Gåte. They were sadly completely robbed in the contest placing in last in the final proceedings. Props has to be given to the voters back at home however for giving this a chance over a return appearance for Keiino who probably would have not placed much better. It also benefits a fair deal from its extended runtime from the EP version which I have linked below.
Coming in next at #47 we have my favourite song yet from Klangphonics, although due to timing difference it is not their highest appearance. 'Ghost (Find Me Again)' was the last single put out in advance of their debut album and also my entry into the BJSC shortly after its release. A real standout melodic techno piece which has a lot more feeling and atmosphere put into it than many other tracks in its style and again proving they are one of a kind in this style and certainly one of my top discovery artists of the year.
Meanwhile at #46, it is a repeat appearance for Anamē whose 'Peaceful Avenues' peaked around the turn of the year. We may well see some new tracks from them in the 2025 list but for now this one remains their top effort being a rather emotional melodic house song.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

A first-time hitmaker in Tim van Werd at #45 albeit with another familiar sample again, 'Some Things' was assisted greatly by sampling one of my favourite songs of the 80s 'The Way It Is' by Bruce Hornsby, turning it into a smooth melodic house track which was a perfect soundtrack to the end of summer.
A more familiar name comes next at #44, being the biggest hit for Disclosure for a good few years. 'She's Gone, Dance On' is also a sample-led track albeit of a more obscure song. It was certainly refreshing to see them do an upbeat club-focused track for the first time in a while which certainly paid off for them commercially to receiving upwards of 60m Spotistreams.
The second appearance for Fat Dog up next who were also amongst my favourite artist discoveries of the year. 'Wither' was the last single release of their debut album and was certainly the strongest pick from what they had left on it. Being a very fun and high energy shouty track.
At #42 we have the first hit for Aaron Hibell, a producer who had quickly been gaining vitality in the year for his grandiose techno productions although it was a special re-do of his 'Levitation' that really had me in awe from the first listen. Making the most of its 7 minute runtime with a strong trance influence throughout the track's climax and keeping the final 2 minutes as a beat-less soundscape - it was a certain BJSC hit to my ears which was eventually proven right.
Another of my BJSC hits of the year also appears up next at #41, coming from Marie Davidson who was once again given the Soulwax remix treatment. However to me 'Y.A.A.M.' had a lot more of an edge over their more commercially successful 'Work It', with its rather demanding lyrics and synth stabs. It was again an instant #1 debut here having wowed me during a YouTube trawl.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

Starting at #40 we have Clann who are the project of Canadian composer Sebastian McKinnon, being another YouTube discovery and eventual BJSC hit for me - also taking the last #1 of the year. 'Arise' is a beautiful piece of two fairly distinct sections both with cinematic orchestration and heavenly vocals.
Taking us to #39 are Tinlicker who started out the year strong with 'This Life', with vocals provided from the frontman of Editors, Tom Smith. Another brilliant progressive house effort from them although they were to save their best for the album release itself..
One of the year's big sleeper successes at #38, it was the second single release for Fat Dog - 'All the Same' matching the peak it scaled in the weekly chart. Initially overshadowed a bit by the former 'King of the Slugs' as this one is a rather more conventional song however it held up very well on repeat listens and is a right banger in itself.
It wouldn't be a year in the 2020s without Gareth Emery scoring a #1 hit, which eventually happened for him in September with 'Fallen' - not his highest appearance in the rundown but manages a respectable #37. It saw him go back to his proper trance roots a bit and was interestingly the first time he guested a foreign language vocalist, this actually being a remix of a song he heard and loved when he was in China.
Two tracks from German electronic outfit Klangphonics benefit from having been out for a while longer than 'Ghost' to appear in the top 40, firstly at #36 is 'In Between' which is basically an instrumental piece, progressing very well across its near-7 minute runtime.

🔥 THE HOTTEST 200 🔥

A rock ballad up next at #35 coming from Castle Rat who were another lucky YouTube trawl discovery, albeit they ended up my worst-performing BJSC entry of the year. They describe themselves as a 'doom metal' band and indeed 'Cry For Me' fits the 'doom' aspect of that. I'm typically not into the type of rock that tries to recreate the 70s but this really stood out.
One of the big rising trends in dance certainly had to be European Afro-house which eventually went mainstream from Adam Port with 'Move' which lands here at #34. Certainly one of the most interesting dance hits we've had recently even if I'm not into much of the style otherwise.
At #33 we have one of the year's biggest pop hits which served as the big breakthrough for Chappell Roan. 'Good Luck, Babe!' took a good deal of 80s Kate Bush influence and gave us a big chorus and bridge which we'd been missing a lot of in pop. It certainly was a surprise to me how good this was as I hadn't got into anything I heard from her prior, though ultimately it isn't quite the highest pop track in the rundown.
Back to more familiar trance at #32, with it being the top appearance this year for Craig Connelly and much assisted vocally by Cari who sang on last year's EOY #1 'What Matters' for RAM. 'Breathe Again' is another big anthem from the two, it doesn't do anything unexpected but doesn't need to.
In the top 40 for a second time now we have Boris Brejcha whose 'Vienna' now places five spots higher than previously at #31. He did eventually release an album which assisted this further although none of the new tracks lived up to the high standard set by this. Later on I'll reveal if he still has the top song of the decade-so-far with 2020 year-end #1 'Gravity'..

A bit of a reprieve from all the dance next at #30 we have the first of two appearances for Adrianne Lenker, an unlikely hitmaker here perhaps although 'Sadness As A Gift' stood out for sounding like one of the classic country songs my mum would often play with its beautiful arrangement.
Another act with two tracks in the top 40 up at #29 are Justice, who came back strong with very much-awaited new music giving us a double A-side both songs of which ended up being my eventual favourites of the album. First up is 'Generator' which has more of a classic Justice hard-electro sound.
A lovely bit of loopy disco-house comes next at #28 being the belated second hit here for Adelphi Music Factory. 'More Than Words' expectedly didn't light up the Club Bizarre scoreboard much but I love the sound it's going for being fairly reminiscent of what LF System had been doing.
Another big pop hit of the year at #27, the year 2001 that is. But of course I had to very much welcome the return of Sophie Ellis-Bextor to the British pop chart after I "celebrated" NYE by watching Saltburn. You all know 'Murder On The Dancefloor' as a classic now anyhow and it was good to get an excuse to give this a proper run on my chart.
It was another great year for TheFatRat coming up to a decade since his breakthrough, scoring two big hits with the first to appear here being 'Myself & I'. Vocalist Riell had appeared on a few of his previous songs but her vocal talent particularly got showcased here, with the cinematic techno-esque drop being a fresh sound for Mr Rat.

Another Club Bizarre pick for me at #25, this happened to be a lucky find at the time to fit the theme. 'Emotional Intelligence' remains the only track so far from New Zealand duo Chaos In The CBD to make an impression though it was the type of song I had long wanted to find being essentially a dancified jazz number with piano and sax solos!
A right banger at #24 from another one-hit wonder act in Mainline Magic Orchestra though 'Work' was much-assisted by the vocals of Juicy Romance. It timed rather nicely into me finding a new job although I suspect that's not exactly what she is rapping about.
The top performer for Klangphonics we have at #23 and it is indeed the song that started it off for them having found it on YouTube and soon after went to check whatever else they had done recently. 'You and Me' is another grandiose electronica piece from them making great use of an organ and a strong long buildup section.
EDM's most notable newcomer of this decade could perhaps be John Summit who this year did score his biggest hit with me with 'Tears' coming in at #22, taken as the tie-in single from his debut album which otherwise was a bit hit-and-miss. This is certainly the type of progressive house I'd like to hear more of from him and it's also helped by a strong vocal performance.
Meanwhile we say hi to TheFatRat again at #21 with his first release of the year in 'Sail Away'. Being another track with regular vocalist Laura Brehm it was of course very-much hyped up and landed straight in at #1 albeit being quickly knocked off by a song yet to appear. The track went for more a high-tempo trance inspiration in the drop which was again a fresh move for him though still stylistically remained very much TheFatRat.
