Starting off the top 20 we have one of the year's biggest rising producers in Pawsa who specialises in doing tech house remakes of older songs, this year we had 'Too Cool To Be Careless' which covered an 80s hit from Dennis Edwards, a great example of a groovy minimal house tune.

Coming in at #19 we have Ben Hemsley who will be contending for #1 later on but for now we have an 8-minute classic Ibiza trance inspired anthem 'Benirrás', named after one of Ibiza's beaches. It's been a while since I'd heard anything sounding this late 90s so was very welcome to hear and it doesn't waste a minute of its runtime.

Japanese-born melodic house producer Qrion has become one of the most notable on the Anjunadeep label this year having recently put out a second album which 'Ice Palace' at #18 is taken from. Easily a standout of her work so far it is a lush instrumental piece.

At #17 we have the second and highest appearance from Adrianne Lenker, 'Ruined' being the first song I'd heard from her as her previous work passed me by, leading into her 2nd solo album. It quickly stood out as an emotional piano ballad that to me has more feeling in it than anything I've heard in a similar style for years. The song was also my biggest BJSC hit of the year.

Finally on to the biggest pop hit of the year coming in at #16 it is 'Houdini' from Dua Lipa which led her third album - an excellently written and produced track which had expectations for the album high which weren't quite lived up to in the end. More of this would be brilliant though being full of hooks and sass. Yes this means the whole top 15 are non-chart hits.

At #15 we have a producer who did get a minor UK hit a couple of years ago however Schak put out a much better banger in 2024 with 'Got No Money', a track that really could've been a commercial hit if he was lucky enough again but alas. It was great to hear Vula back on vocals again five years after her hit with Riton/Oliver Heldens who also adds a fair bit of energy to this.
Alas for Gareth Emery he's not in the top 10 this time however he's still had a great year with 'Carry On' as his biggest hit at #14, another big vocal-led trance track which is the type of thing Gaz is best at.
At #13 we have the other side of the Justice comeback double-A. 'One Night/All Night' also intriguingly guested Tame Impala on vocals, a musician whose own stuff I've not been massively into however he fits in very well with the nu-disco sound Justice are going for here.
The breakthrough hit for Leblanc comes in at #12, being a melodic techno interpretation of 'Palladio' by Karl Jenkins, the original which I was unfamiliar with. I do tend to love a classical-inspired dance track anyhow so this unsurprisingly shot to #1 at the turn of the year. Later efforts from him haven't managed to sound quite this grand however he is planning an album so he could perhaps be back next year.
Meanwhile it is an unfortunate near-top 10 miss for Matt Guy with another of my big BJSC hits 'Every Little Time', having made the lower end of my top 100 last year from its limited chart weeks. The track is a big classic house anthem which manages to get the sound just perfect in a time where with it having been overdone is quite hard to stand out in these days so big props to him here. His actual 2024 output hasn't half lived up to this sadly.

Nice to see "Houdini" in the top 20 of the year for you.

Giving Carry On a quick listen now, it's sounding pretty nice - a fairly standard song for its genre but I'm nodding my head along to it which is generally a good sign! And the vocals are great as well.

Finally making our way into the top 10 then, first up we have a collab between two French electronic producers in NTO & Vitalic with a track that builds into something rather grand in 'Cœur Noir', a masterclass of an EDM instrumental with a wide array of synths and a trance-inspired atmosphere.

 

At #9 there is a first for everything and this time it's our first Norwegian folk-metal song to be a hit here. 'Bardaginn' was the breakthrough this year for Kalandra, the title translates to 'Battle' with the song's lyrics sang in Old Norse. It's as epic as that sounds really, making it an excellent YouTube find and eventual BJSC hit.

 

The top entry for Fat Dog appears next and at #8 it is 'Running', which quite rightly was the focus piece of their debut album and live show. Dance-punk surely doesn't get any better than this really with a lot going for it and the energy only ramping up past the middle section. Certainly exemplifies why they were the most exciting new band for me this year.

 

Back to dance and questionable maths next with Peggy Gou landing in the year-end top 10 a second year running this time with '1+1=11'. Being an instrumental piece this clearly was never going to get half as much attention as 'Nanana', but it may well be just as good in my chart. Being very much inspired by late 90s Ibiza trance again with its excellent piano riff and synth work.

 

The top metal song of the countdown completes the section at #6, and well the word 'epic' may be overused but this song is nothing less than it. With my music taste opening up a bit more to metal this year it was only a matter of time before one of the genre's biggest names in Nightwish got a belated first hit though even I didn't expect something quite this amazing in 'Perfume of the Timeless', the lead from their tenth(!) album and also the longest song in the top 10 this year at eight minutes. I still ought to check out some of their earlier work at some point...

Time to wrap up this show...

At #5 we have a breakthrough.. sort of, with Hel:sløwed. The leading act are a duo one half of which is Helsloot who has had a couple of hit collabs with Tinlicker, whose track 'If You Only Knew' guests vocal duo Amber Revival. The track was released in September 2023 however passed me by until it placed highly in Armin van Buuren's yearly fan poll of the best trance songs of the year. It now belatedly places in a similar position a year on for me as this is a really well-put together bit of progressive trance, assisted by an emotional vocal performance and a lush chill soundscape in the production. If you like mellow and beautiful then definitely check this out.

Coming in at #4 we have the top song from the year's top album (yes, this post also serves to announce that), it is of course coming from Tinlicker who have had a huge year with their project 'Cold Enough For Snow'. Whilst the pre-release singles were great, they certainly saved their strongest effort for the album launch itself which was 'Nowhere To Go'. The song was also certainly helped by an inspired choice of guest vocalist being Brian Molko who you may know as the lead singer of Placebo. The production elements here are the very best that Tinlicker has to offer in their mix of melodic and progressive house, and the dark tonality suits the vocal and lyrics perfectly too. When the drop and that gut punching chorus line hits that is also emotional EDM perfection. Thankfully it was also one of my biggest BJSC hits of the year which very much paid off for me waiting this long to send them!

An artist with one of the most impressive #1s to hits ratios in my chart, whilst we didn't get much output from him this year what we did get was enough to give his highest year-end placement yet. At #3, it is French producer/composer Worakls with another of his classical crossovers in 'Furia Electronica'. It certainly is a furious and tense five minutes and what a genius piece of music this indeed is! A YouTuber commenter suggests this is what it would basically sound like if Hans Zimmer composed electronic music so if that sounds interesting to you then do definitely check it out. I certainly would've sent this to BJSC had I not already won with him before as it well takes what 'Storm' did and ramps up the epic factor even more. Hopefully a belated second album from him is actually incoming in 2025 as he has been teasing it for years now.

A surprise entry for the year-end #2, however it is a song that has had an insane amount of replay value ever since I discovered it through YouTube recommendations in late 2023, as such it spent the majority of 2024 within the chart which is most impressive given it never scaled the top 10 in that time. 'Blackoak' served as the breakthrough here for Maribou State, an English electronic duo who had already put out two albums but both had passed me by. This was their first release in a while anyhow and will feature on their forthcoming album finally released tomorrow. It is an outstanding piece of mellow electronica, assisted by organic percussion and bass alongside a lush string arrangement which is often key to my heart. The vocal sample here is effective too, with only just as many lyrics as it needs to provided by some of the duo's friends. Simply put it's a very uplifting piece and just what we need a bit more of in this crazy world.

However, as anyone who paid close attention to my weekly chart would have sussed out long before now, there was only ever going to be one real contender for this year's #1 pick. The year's biggest story was of one English man and his mission to bring back classic trance to the masses, namely Ben Hemsley whose 'Closer' had the longest reign at #1 in the 2020s so far, spending 12 uninterrupted weeks on top. Having started out producing some decent house, Ben has recently realised where his talent really lies is in trance which eventually culminated in this peak anthem. Somewhat reminiscent of last year's EOY #2 from Calvin Harris 'Miracle' perhaps, this ramps up the euphoria factor even more with its classic piano riff and Ibiza synths. Not to mention a powerhouse vocal performance from guest performer Chenai who alas hasn't actually done anything further since this song yet, and also assisted on the pen by Theo Hutchcraft of Hurts. Based off teasers from Instagram, Ben is sure to have a fantastic 2025 ahead and dare I say he may challenge Sir Gareth Emery to become my favourite trance producer of the moment??

Great to see Nowhere To Go so high, one of my favourite BJSC entries from last year. Now I'm listening to Closer I'm remembering that from BJSC as well, it's a fairly decent trance song and can see why you enjoy it so much!
