It was the death of John Lennon that stopped the cavalry from getting Christmas #1

That is incorrect. St Winifred's School Choir was Christmas no.1 in 1980, not John Lennon.

Ah 15 years since Simon Cowell got a kick up the arse and was forced to think about the XF songs again and to stop doing them crappy key change Westlifesque releases!!

Also the 2014 Xmas chart was the last series of XF that seemed to be a force as others have pointed out. Also showed record companies that held back releases were pointless going forward. ‘Uptown Funk’ had a Jan 15 release and Fleurs performance showed the potential loses by holding things back!

Stop the Cavalry only made #3.

i agree, especially looking at what is going on in the world currently, i find it hard to listren to 'war is over' whilst russia still invades ukraine and isnotreal is still committing a genocide in palestine

I’m pretty sure it was released as an Anti-War song for the Vietnam War at that time

Stop the Cavalry only made #3.

It was behind "Imagine" and "War Is Over" for one week (not Christmas), that's probably what the intended point was

It was also at #3 on the Christmas 1980 chart behind St Winifred and Starting Over

In the Christmas 1980 chart, Stop The Cavalry was behind St Winifred and Starting Over. It was 4th January 1981 where Stop The Cavalry was behind Imagine and War Is Over

Yes so John Lennon being murdered didn't "stop the Cavalry" from getting Christmas number one as the school choir would've got there anyway. His murder did end up blocking it from number one in the long run anyhow

Without John Lennon’s murder, Stop The Cavalry would’ve been Christmas #2 in 1980 and the first #1 of 1981
