Britain's Sonay Kartal suffered a first-round defeat to Caroline Garcia at the Cincinnati Open.

The 23-year-old was beaten 7-5 4-6 3-6 by her French opponent, who won the 2022 tournament.

Garcia, the former world number four, will now face Karolina Muchova after the 31-year-old's first victory since 19 March, having announced in May, external she would retire later this year.

Kartal's loss followed first-round exits for fellow Britons Katie Boulter and Jacob Fearnley.

Boulter, 29, was beaten 6-0 7-5 by Serbia's Olga Danilovic, who will now face Emma Raducanu - who recently dethroned Boulter as British women's number one - in the second round.

Elsewhere, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams went down to world number 42 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

The 45-year-old American received a wild card entry to Cincinnati after reaching the second round of the Citi Open in Washington last month, but was beaten 6-4 6-4 by her Spanish opponent.

Emma Raducanu brushed aside Olga Danilovic at the Cincinnati Open to make a confident start with her new coach.

The British number one has added Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig to her team on a full-time basis as she prepares for the upcoming US Open.

And the surprise 2021 champion in New York cruised to a 6-3 6-2 win in her first match since the Spaniard came aboard.

Danilovic beat British number three Katie Boulter in the first round while Raducanu had a bye, and the Serbian number one broke Raducanu to love in the first game of Saturday's match.

This revamped US Open Mixed Doubles format is an absolute farce in my view, no need at all to change the format.

Italian doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori completed their "mission" by beating singles stars Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud to win the controversially revamped US Open mixed event.

Errani and Vavassori, whose place in the new-look tournament was initially under threat, defended their crown with a thrilling 6-3 5-7 10-6 victory secured at almost midnight in New York.

The pair walked away with the increased prize pot of $1m (£740,000) designed to attract superstars like Swiatek, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic - five times more than the $200,000 (£148,000) they won last year.

Enticing the singles players meant Errani and Vavassori were the only recognised doubles pairing in the 16-team draw.

"This is for all the doubles players who couldn't play this tournament," said Errani.

Vavassori added: "We have been on a mission."

Medvedev out in R1 already!

oh my Medvedev

the nordics, Ruud and Rune, both out yesterday in 5 sets

Sad to see Draper drop out. Hopefully he’ll be fully recovered soon enough

Ostapenko once again showing herself to be nothing more than a complete brat for the 1000th time. The sport will be a better place when she's no longer in it.

She really doesn't help herself, Jelena. No need at all for what she said to Taylor Townsend.

Emma out, Ribakina swept her away

Also surprisingly out Paolini, she was playing well

Zverev out in R3 too

It's ended up as a strong last eight in the women's side. The two non-seeds are both grand slam champions, and all eight already have experience of a grand slam champion.

Will be rooting for Anisimova to get her revenge on Iga (or at least like, win a handful of games...), and would love Naomi to win the entire thing to keep up the stat of always winning the tournament if she makes the quarters of a grand slam. Failing that, Krejcikova would be impressive after she saved eight match points in the fourth round.

All I care about now is Venus

3 more wins for her please!

Amanda Anisimova beat Iga 6-4 6-3 😯 I'm really impressed with how well she's managed to put the Wimbledon final aside and come back stronger.

And Osaka won too yay rooting for her

Good semis

Sabalenka-Pegula

Anisimova-Osaka

Agree on anyone but Pegula

In men another disappointing match byde Minaur

Djoko-Alcaraz is gonna be epic

But the other semi not no much

Edited by Bjork

Too bad the womens semis were in the middle of the night EU time

looks like very interesting games

both Pegula and Osaka won the 1st set but end up losing to Sabalenka and Anisimova respectively

was rooting for Osaka but alas... also have a soft spot for Anisimova

Anisimova will be #4 in the rankings come Monday, and Osaka #14

First time Osaka has lost a slam semi-final, too bad. Though at least by not winning this tournament, she won't have the pressure of going on to win Oz next year as well.

Just win a few games tomorrow please Amanda, that's all we need from you (though the fact she beat Sabalenka at Wimbledon, you'd hope she does make this a much more interesting final..)
