"Golden" is #1 for a 4th week. It remains so thoroughly unchallenged that most of the upward movement is from the other KPop Demon Hunters songs that have already been deigned unable to beat it. There are now 6 in the top 10 as "Free" makes it over the line. I didn't mention last week that Tinashe hit a new career high by surpassing the #5 peak of "All My Friends", so I will this week and she's gotten even higher again. Tyler, The Creator continues to wreak havoc on the relevance of a Friday release as he charts a new entry weeks after the fact, and it's on the cusp of surpassing the daily Spotify peak from day 1. Olivia Dean gets the huge boon of a week 1 new entry, as "Man I Need" will no doubt soar next week.

KPop Demon Hunters is now the #1 album for a 6th week. I believe it's the longest running #1 album from an animated film but haven't had time to double check this. Conan Gray has scored his highest ever charting album as he reaches #2. He's had two top 10s before, but only on the lower end. Jordan Davis, the guy who made that song about how you should try just buying a house scores his first ever top 50 album, and lands in the top 10 even. The next debut comes from Mama Kin Spender, which is the duo of Mama Kin and Spender if you can believe it. Spender is also one half of one of my favourite songs no one's ever heard of. OneRepublic enter with another one of those compilations that basically no one is buying, and it's just in time to potentially climb next week as THE GREAT GOMMAGE OF 2025 IS HAPPENING (play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, very good video game) and like half the album chart will be wiped.

Wow at Daniel Seavey making the top 10, that feels hugely surprising! He's better known as a member of Why Don't We, who had two top 10 albums in Australia.

"Golden" is #1 for a 5th week. I apologise for bad intel last week, I believe the actual ARIA Chart gommage is coming next week. We come very close to having 7 KPop Demon Hunters songs in the top 10, and maybe that's still possible as sombr is crashing pretty hard on Spotify this week...except nah, Sabrina Carpenter's gonna carve up real estate. Maybe not quite as much as you'd expect as she's having a slower showing in Australia as per regular business. Too early to say if it's gonna correct itself by the end of the week or she's genuinely less popular here, but expect only "Tears" and "Manchild" as top 10 locks at this stage. Olivia Dean continues to press on as well and could make the top 10 as well. Also vaulting up is Tyler, The Creator, scoring just his 4th ever top 20 hit this week. Doja Cat arrives at #28 but is still making gains on Spotify currently. Could drop next week due to increased competition, but might not be as DOA as it looks. Also just in case there wasn't enough KPop Demon Hunters in here, TWICE are now in here twice as "Strategy" sneaks in. The always popular Rihanna album cut "Breakin' Dishes" shows up for the first time ever (already Platinum mind you), re-asserting the Reloaded edition of "Good Girl Gone Bad" as one of the most hit-laden albums ever, this is the 9th top 50 hit on that album now. It also presents an interesting situation for ARIA next week as it's one of the 8 songs that are old enough to be removed from the chart in this week's top 50. 5 of these are no-brainers I don't expect to last, the other two include "Pink Pony Club" and "Lose Control", songs that are too old but hadn't quite debuted 2 years ago (I still expect them to go). ARIA's initial clause allowed for a 10 week grace period for songs that make the top 30, so we shall see what they make of Rihanna's newly debuting entry.

KPop Demon Hunters is the #1 album for a 7th week. They fend off one of the biggest weeks of new arrives of the year, which doesn't mean much because it's only the top album they need to beat, but there's some definite aura farming when you see off new entries from #2 down to #6. The closest contender is Laufey, perhaps expected as her last album debuted in the top 10 and she's only gotten more popular since then. I now have some interesting trivia for you. Who do you think is the highest charting Icelandic artist in Australia? Jónsi & Emiliana Torrini have actually never made the top 50. KALEO top out in the top 30, while even Sigur Rós have never quite made the top 10. Australia was a particularly big market for Ásgeir a decade ago and he reached the top 10, and your obvious choice of Björk has just been tied by Laufey. The answer is of course Of Monsters and Men, whose debut album was such a hit that it actually climbed to #1 in early 2013. It might just be a matter of time for Laufey to eventually top the charts here, just ask Deftones. I was recently surprised to learn that their classic "White Pony" debuted as high as #2 in Australia, and they were on diminishing returns after that. It was a mighty twist then in 2016 when they scored a #1 album for the first time. The follow up to that album peaked at #3, and that's where they've landed yet again with their latest. If you want to talk about fun chart patterns though, look at Stray Kids, who now have three #2 albums and three #4 albums, with no other top 10 peaks. They've done this all in the space of 3 years. Speaking of artists who've gotten immensely popular in the last 3 years...actually I don't want to talk about Royel Otis. Find out why by reading my next blog post on Friday. They're not the only artist with dodgy vibes in their lyrics though, because sombr is arriving at #6 with an album thriving off streaming numbers, so it's probably the new entry this week that'll hold strongest next week. I'm out of links but it's okay because I made it to the end of the debut chain, now I can just mention that Lainey Wilson has come up trumps with her deluxe re-issue, improving on the #19 debut she had last year to make it to #8. John Fogerty has cranked out the '(John's Version)'s this week to enter in the top 10 with a bunch of songs you're likely very familiar with. Tyler, The Creator doesn't quite see the same slingshot as Lainey Wilson, but he does turn a top 20 album into a top 10 this week, after a much longer wait ("Cherry Bomb" originally debuted at #13). Tyler actually has 4 albums in the top 25 this week. Wolf Alice's last album got them into the top 10 for the first time, and they'd have probably done it again if they could just wait a week to put this one out. Following the legacy of the occasional Indian artist who gets a decent amount of traction in the antipodes, Karan Aujla gets his first ever entry this week. We've also got more re-issues, but this one's nowhere near a new peak because it was already huge on arrival, looking at the debut album from Perth boys Jebediah, perhaps the second most famous band named after minor Simpsons lore (sorry Hockey Dad), with their beloved debut album. If you want to get up to speed, "Leaving Home" and "Harpoon" are two stone cold classics in the much loved realm of '90s Australian alt-rock. Just sneaking into the top 40 is some kind of Bleak Squad. They are in fact a supergroup, comprised of Adalita (of Magic Dirt) fame, as well as members of The Bad Seeds, Dirty Three and Art of Fighting (not to be confused with Art of Sleeping), which is several generations of rock royalty. Lastly, we've got the return of Hands Like Houses' album from earlier this year. What a crazy week, and yet next week is gonna be even crazier (Sabrina Carpenter probably debuts at #1).

Intrigued by the new rules coming in, I wish the UK would do something similar, especially in the ultra stale albums chart.

Behold, your new standard bearings!

As of this week, ARIA have removed everything that is over 2 years old. Not just became a hit 2 years ago, everything. So goodbye, "Breakin' Dishes", "Lose Control" and "Pink Pony Club", while "The Door" is likely heading to an early grave in two weeks. There is a provisional rule that allows exceptions for anything that hasn't charted in 10 years and makes the top 30, though we're yet to really see the specifics of how it plays out. Tyler, The Creator's "Cherry Bomb" re-issue might be the litmus test, as it hangs around for a second week in the top 30. Perhaps fortunate for once that these anniversary releases are often late because the album did chart 10 and a half years ago. Olivia Rodrigo will likely confirm for us a specific 104 week limit next week, but it's also possible we see exceptions in the case of midweek releases, like how "Not Like Us" managed 17 weeks on the New Music Singles Chart, and maybe leap years could come into effect, never doubt automated systems if given the chance to do something silly.

On the surface, the biggest change comes with the album chart. Not only has there been an exodus of all the older releases, but a surprise bonus package is the apparent disappearance of all those compilations that were often appearing week on week with no clear attention, and sometimes dubious releases (looking at you, ABBA & Flo Rida). I do not believe that ARIA have actually removed Greatest Hits sets, but it appears they're updating their streaming rules for the second time. According to the new Code of Practice, streams only count to the original album for any track, so it's still possible for these albums to chart, but they'll likely have to do it on just sales mostly. This has likely partially affected Calvin Harris & Benson Boone whose albums I'd expect to have jumped back into the top 50 if they had all their streams counting. The 6th highest selling Australian album this week was a Greatest Hits set by The Bamboos, which is likely just outside the top 50, just on first week sales.

ARIA have not actually taken all of the old music out behind the shed, because we have been introduced to new On Replay charts for both the main charts, and the Australian charts. Technically we've had one of these for the Albums Chart for over a decade though it was previously called the Catalogue Albums Chart, the stats from that chart have carried over to this new one. These four charts are all top 50 charts, and I regret to inform you that they are subject to the same selective reporting that the ARIA Charts have always had. It's hard to be certain on all omissions, but I'm pretty confident that Radiohead's "Creep" and "Let Down" are both missing from this new chart, and the omissions on the Australian charts could be plentiful because we've never seen the chart this far down before. This also means a big revitalisation on all the component charts, though again I'm suspicious of potential omissions. For the record, there has been no specific mention of what will happen with Christmas music or End Of Year charts, although my interpretation of the Code of Practice suggests there won't be any hybrid of the two charts, and we're going to get the funny Billboard Year End experience for those songs that are getting ruled out in the middle of the year.

Anyway the biggest piece of news is the tragic death of my extra leading zero on the album chart posts, gone but not forgotten. It is also possible the Bubbling Under chart might never be used again, but I'm gonna wait out to see what happens once the K-Pop Demon Hunters songs all hit 4 months, and maybe there will be loads of Taylor Swift songs on the chart then, so it'll have a triumphant return.

--

Now let's talk about the chart itself.

"Golden" is #1 for a 6th week. I'm going to cautiously say that it's safe for next week too but I do this with no Spotify data to work with. Olivia Dean hits the top 10 but the big happening of the week is Sabrina Carpenter arriving in the top 50 with her entire album. This is a slight improvement on last year's effort when a couple tracks didn't quite make the cut, and again provisionally, I suspect the majority will stick around for the next week. In case you were wondering, there are approximately 8 songs missing via the new rules, so it's not really changing her chart fortunes this week, with the lowest being at #32. As I correctly predicted last week, "Tears" is the only new arrival in the top 10, while "Manchild" records its first climb ever in its chart run to return to the top 10 (2-2-2-3-7-13-15-17-17-18-19-20-7, if you were wondering). Sabrina Carpenter might be harshing the buzz on potential new entries getting sucked into the top 50 but to be fair, I think only "Dior" is close range of doing it, and I won't be mourning if it gets locked out. Actually the biggest disappointment for me is that I've spent the past several years observing the ins & outs of the ARIA Chart, waiting to see when we might finally have a top 50 chart with no 2010s singles left in it for the first time since that decade started. "All The Stars" was the last hold out, and I believe it would have fallen out on this very week, allowing me to make a mighty celebration that I'd been waiting years to do. What an underwhelming time to introduce these new rules solely on this basis.

Sabrina Carpenter scores her second #1 album. This could prove an interesting tussle on next week's album given the distribution of streaming points on these top two albums and a likely sales differential. If I had to guess, I'd think Sabrina gets it next week before KPop Demon Hunters overtakes again the week after, but it's too hard to tell. Last week we had a lot of top 10 debuts and I made a prediction that sombr would actually climb in week 2 because of the power of big single streams. I was correct, but I overlooked the possibility of the usually strong second weeks of Stray Kids, which also seems them to a new peak and ruins my observation of their peak patterns from last week. The first artist to really take advantage of the new rules is The Wolfe Brothers, who score their 5th top 10 album through this. The highest they've ever charted is #6, so they're very clutch about this. Hitting a new career high is Hayley Jensen, charting for the second time, but now at #14. Followers of Australian reality TV from decades ago like myself would be correct in identifying that it is indeed the Hayley Jensen from Season 2 of Australian Idol. Another beneficiary is The Hives, who score their highest charting album since 2002 with an album that is not a Greatest Hits despite what it might look like. Then, just sneaking in is Belinda Carlisle who charts for the first time since 1996!

I'd love the UK album chart to be like this cheeseblock @officialcharts please 🥺

Happy to see sombr achieving a Top 5 album!

"Golden" is #1 for a 7th week. We beat the UK to that particular play but otherwise we're following their lead because Olivia Dean has climbed up to #2. She'll have to do a whole lot more of that if she wants to get any higher. Sabrina Carpenter mostly sees varying declines though they're not very big and also "House Tour" manages to climb into the top 20. We've also got the first ever application of the new chart rules forcing a new song into the chart, as Lady Gaga sneaks into the top 50 with "The Dead Dance". This is the second time this year that Lady Gaga has debuted at #50, as "Abracadabra" did the same before climbing 38 places to its #12 peak. It's possible this one will climb also next week but I wouldn't count on it being that drastic. I'm writing this on September 16th, of course, and astute observers will remember that both "The Door" and "greedy" were released on September 15th, 2023 ("greedy" isn't in the top 50 right now but it might be next week). You would think that makes this their last week on the chart, but we're still learning how that works.

KPop Demon Hunters returns to the top of the album chart for an 8th week. I made a bad prediction but to be fair it was probably close. The reason I mentioned uncertainty around the new rules is because if you look at this week's chart, you'll see Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" in for a 105th week, either an oversight or a confirmation that this is our benchmark going forward. I can approve of this considering that 104 weeks isn't really 2 years, although ARIA have been operating under the belief that 4 months is somewhere between 16 and 17 weeks so it's a little inconsistent if you do the maths. I blame the Smarch weather. Anyway we have debuts and the highest one comes from John Butler. He's often seen with or without his Trio, where the inclusion is usually a significant boon on his chart positions even though he's usually the main guy behind it all. A 'Kevin Parker' album probably wouldn't debut at #1 if you catch my drift. Anyway this is a very funny application of tagging because if you look up the album on Spotify, you'll see 'John Butler, John Butler Trio' as the credited artist, an amusing concession to promotion. Track 1 on the album is called "Going Solo". It's clearly worked though because this is charting significantly higher than any other solo John Butler album in the past. Next up we've got G Flip who hit #1 with their last album, the one that very briefly held the record for most triple j Hottest 100 entries in a single year. Things have changed a lot in 25 years, and so now Slipknot do belong, do exist, and people do give a shit. That's to say that their self-titled album has scored a new peak thanks to the vinyl release, originally peaking at #32. Their last 4 albums have all gone to #1. Unlike his suits, David Byrne is also managing to fit in as he scores his highest ever solo album entry, though I guess the new rules are helping a little in both of these cases. They certainly are for Big Thief, who have matched the #19 peak of their previous album. I can't say the same for Rob Thomas, who's gone from 4 straight top 3 albums to one that's just happy to be here. You'll also see two returning King Gizzard albums this week. This is truly an iceberg meme moment because the band have put their entire catalogue up on Bandcamp under the Radiohead model. They probably wouldn't do much to the chart under the old rules because they're likely falling short, but I just want to highlight that the Australian On Replay Albums chart (which is a top 50) has 28 of their albums this week.

"Golden" is #1 for a 9th week. Next week they'll attempt to reach the Party Rock zone of double digits, but there's competition this time as "Man I Need" has made a big leap ahead on Spotify. Olivia Dean has just been announced to perform at the ARIA Awards in a couple of months, so we're building to something. "Golden" is always doing better than it appears though so it could be a close race. It's also the kind of self-sustaining profile boost that can be seen in the lower pieces as "Nice To Each Other" is still climbing to new peaks at the same time. The big arrival this week is from RAYE, scoring her first ever solo top 50 entry, which looks to climb a bunch next week. After hovering just below for quite a while, Kehlani also finally gets in with "Folded". I have to note because this is a relatively rare sight, but we've got an expected retirement for "The Door" by Teddy Swims. He's going to be in the country soon (unless he cancels) to promote the two big hits he both has and does not have right now. Maybe "Bad Dreams" might come back. To add some purpose to the Bubbling Under section, I'm now going to keep count of the weeks. I do think that the combination of KPop Demon Hunters aging and the arrival of many Taylor Swift songs could shift the scales.

KPop Demon Hunters gets a 9th week at #1 on the albums chart as well. Heading up the list of new arrivals is Ocean Alley, and we've got what we call fun chart stuff because for the third time in a row, they've debuted at #3. Cardi B debuts in the top 10 for the second time, though not quite as high as her debut. Nine Inch Nails' soundtrack defies that one Simpsons joke and they get a 6th top 10 album. Lola Young arrives just outside the top 10 with her debut, while I Prevail miss the top 10 for the first time after 3 consecutive top 10 debuts. Biffy Clyro have never had a top 10 album and just land around the middle. I don't know if they would've made it under the old conditions, so it just allows things to look more regular. The rest of the arrivals I don't think would've made it and I don't have any material for them. I'm too busy thinking about how I need to update my signature image as it's now outdated and I'm still a little jet lagged for the experience. 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

"Golden" is #1 for a 10th week. I don't think you need me to tell you that it won't be #1 next week. The way things are going, it might not be in the top 10 next week, but we'll have to see what the impact is when it gets there. "Man I Need" is the real misfortune here. There's every chance that it still ends up at the top spot, but this was the big one, and it might need to wait around for a while to get there now. Tate McRae has another top 10 hit this week, as Australia seems to be siding with Canada against itself in this drama (The Kid LAROI has had the #1 Australian track for a few weeks now though). It also feels weird to say that with how many top 50 entries she's had this year, "Sports car" is now in the first half of her top 50 hits chronologically, weird. Olivia Dean catches a break with "Nice To Each Other" sneaking into the top 10. She's also got the only other debuts this week, with new single "So Easy (To Fall In Love)", and (relatively) older single "Lady Lady" getting in together.

Olivia Dean also has more going her way, she's got the #1 album this week! Despite the fact it might feel like Bliss n Eso have put out the same album again, they are distinctly different titles. We had "The Sun" in 2021, "The Moon (Light Side)" earlier this year, and now there's "The Moon (Dark Side)". Although by only reaching #3, it's their lowest charting album in 17 years. They can take solace in the fact that their bizarre Menulog ad has been nominated for an ARIA Award. Just below them we've got The Living End scoring their 10th top 10 album, though it's their lowest charting studio album in 25 years. Maybe this shouldn't be surprising as it's been 7 years since their last one and they're now safely slotted into the nostalgia circuit. Doja Cat scores a 3rd top 10 album, also a bit lower than the last one but perhaps the new chart rules can help it hang around a little longer than "Scarlet", an album that was brutalised by the top 2 tracks rule when it had exactly 2 very big hits on it. Finally we've got someone not falling short as Brad Cox scores another #7 album 2 years after the last one. That one only had 3 debuts above it though so he can take a morale victory. I'll admit I didn't even realise Mariah Carey had a new album out until it turned up on the release schedule, and it's her lowest album since "Charmbracelet" had a very poor showing and missed the top 40. Not to be confused with the Belgian "Bring It On" band, Geese have their first ever top 50 album. PRESIDENT have not been around for long but they've already notched up a chart entry here. Zara Larsson hasn't had a top 50 album here since "So Good" and is being helped by the new chart rules because I suspect 2021's "Poster Girl" which didn't quite make the top 50 would have done better, but she's still trending up from the last album either way so it's a success. I'll just note the Australian entry from here which comes from electronic musician Tobiahs. He's really out here proving that one Simpsons episode correct that someone from Australia would ever be named Tobias. If you only know him for his covers/interpolations, I'll give him credit because he also co-wrote two of Baker Boy's songs that I'd consider to be at least in the top 525 entries for the span of 2013 to 2022 in triple j's Hottest 100. I do enjoy not spoiling my blog, thank you for asking.

Just when you thought we couldn't set a new bar for huge album releases, we've proposed a new benchmark: what's the most possible songs you can debut and have them all land ahead of all comers? Not only has Taylor Swift debuted at #1, but she's landed her entire album above everything else, something she's never done before. It's a new high also in terms of monopolising, her last album had the top 10 positions to herself (that terrible Hozier song was #11), now she has the whole top 12. I suspect this wasn't a done deal as "Honey" clearly started lagging behind at the end of the week, so talk about running it as close as possible. I would just like to point out in regard to this album that I saw a comment to the effect of "The Fate of Ophelia" sounding a bit like the Melbourne band Telenova (in particular their song "Discothèque Inside My Head"), so if you like that song, maybe this is your calling to discover a new favourite band. In typical fashion, this is a week everyone tends to take off their calendar so that's the bulk of the news on the singles chart. Olivia Dean sees that second week word-of-mouth bump akin to Morgan Wallen a few years ago, "So Easy (To Fall In Love)" is effectively a climber this week with how many songs it overtook, while "Baby Steps" is provisionally the first song to get into the top 50 solely because of the new rules, unless it climbs next week which it might. Teddy Swims performed at the NRL Grand Final last week, and while "Lose Control" and "The Door" aren't allowed on this chart anymore, "Bad Dreams" can get back in for them. With the whole Taylor Swift stock pretty comfortably staying in the top 50 next week and the KPop Demon Hunters stock entering its 5th month either next week or the week after, we could see the return of the Bubbling Under chart, exciting.

Taylor Swift has 14 #1 albums now, Jimmy Barnes needs to get back in the studio because o lord she comin'. Otherwise the message wasn't fully received on the album chart because we've got debuts. First off the rack is The Rions with their debut album. They actually charted at #35 last year with an EP but the LP treatment gets them into the top 5. I will eventually write about them a couple of times on my blog so I'll keep my thoughts to myself for now. Also making a debut though in the more proper sense is Irish DJ Kettama who makes the top 10. I don't know how much everyone keeps up with Wiggles lore, but The Tree Of Wisdom is the nephew of Blue Wiggle Anthony, the only original member still in the group. The Tree Of Wisdom has found some virality in the new age of social media and has charted now with a collaborative album. The song on New Music Friday last week was a fascinatingly bizarre addition to the canon of Wiggles songs that list numerous food stuffs. For some exciting Dirca lore, I've got to note that in 2022, due to a lapse in concentration, I accidentally bought an entire EP from BOY SODA when I just wanted the one song, it's the only time I've ever bought something by mistake on iTunes I think. Anyway, thanks to the profile boost from my mistake, the singer/rapper has now released his debut album and charts for the first time. Not charting for the first time is local country singer Morgan Evans.

"The Fate Of Ophelia" is #1 for a second week. This is one of those chart weeks where there's been a massive re-distribution of figures that is largely hidden because it's all happening around itself. That is to say, streams across the board for Taylor Swift's new album are considerably down, but they don't look to be the case because of the massive head start they had. In cases like these, I find it interesting to look at isolated cases that paint a more vivid picture. "Honey" dropped from #12 to #17, which doesn't seem like a big deal, but if you were to treat it as the only Taylor Swift song on the chart, then suddenly it's dropped from #1 to #6, quite notable! It's not quite as big as it could be because the track list is relatively small at just 12 tracks, but you also get a secondary effect where it will feel like it's harder and harder to knock them out, because the relative ranking needed to do so gets looser. "Honey" only needs to fall below 39 non-Taylor Swift songs before it falls out of the chart, but "Eldest Daughter" will need to fall below 40 of them, and so on. Once you factor in the chart limiting factor from the new rules, this theoretically extends further. I think it's more interesting to think about it that way then to yell on ARIA's Facebook page when there are inevitably multiple album tracks in the top 10 again next week. I think the whole album will stick in the top 50 for another week, but we might start seeing some casualties the week after that. I don't think any album has ever maintained a full presence on the chart for 3 weeks in a row so it's very impressive nonetheless. Otherwise this is a chart where there isn't much else happening apart from Olivia Dean continuing to spread her wings and get another top 50 entry. Seemingly benefitting from a strong YouTube performance as is often the case, JISOO & ZAYN manage to sneak into the top 50 this week, and it'll be interesting to see how they go next week because I imagine those first week boons could offset the pretty respectable gains they're seeing on Spotify this week.

Also as I promised last week, the Honmoon is over and there is a lot of new blood in the Bubbling Under chart. It's mostly just former top 50 entries but we do see Tkandz & Tame Impala poking out. "Dracula" will be trying to sneak into the top 50 next week but it would be very on brand if it were to fall a little short.

Taylor Swift is obviously #1 on the album chart again next week. Tame Impala could provide a genuine challenge next week that I don't think I could confidently call, just because physical sales are always a bit of potluck where they will either vastly surpass or miss expectations. If it can move as many units as "The Slow Rush" did on debut, I'd give it a decent chance to get there. As for what is making an impression, we've got Pete Murray continuing his streak with 5 top 10 albums. It's interesting to think that he's charting higher than he did back in 2011 when he had genuine top 50 hits, and now he's independent, but I guess it was a tough week he found himself in back then. The big winner this week is Gold Coast singer Lyric, who after years of single releases has put out her debut EP and lands in the top 10. A month ago I was at the MCG watching a pack of Lions maul some Cats, and before that happened, Baker Boy was on stage performing (he also returned to play the didgeridoo for Snoop Dogg, it was sick). He's now releasing his second album, falling a bit short of the #3 peak of his award winning debut. Also on that downward trajectory is Calum Scott whose reign of Spotify chart terror seems to have subsided a bit in the last few years, taking him from a top 5 debut album to relying on the new rules to get in at all. Noiseworks' Jon Stevens (who is actually a Kiwi, didn't know) returns to his sporadic solo career to pick up another top 50 entry. The unlucky test subject of the new ARIA rules might just be The Marías who were unable to make the top 50 before, and now have slipped down and still can't get there on either chart. A consolation prize comes this week as now María's solo project Not For Radio reaches the top 50 instead, which it probably wouldn't have before, funny that.

"The Fate Of Ophelia" is #1 for a 3rd consecutive week. I thought it was bound for the floor, but so far this week, she's managed to keep it copacetic so I'm leaning to a 4th and final week next week. Crucial to Olivia Dean is that she's managed to overcome her long standing "Golden" hurdle, so might be ready for the top spot soon. She's also got a 3rd top 10 hit now with "So Easy (To Fall In Love)", taking a similar leap up to "Nice To Each Other" under different circumstances. Taylor Swift has kept her entire track list in the top 50 for a 3rd week, certainly a record, and I think she's a good chance for a 4th week. Something I didn't mention last week because it's often a revolving sequence, but last week's top 50 entries from Olivia Dean & JISOO have both dropped out, potentially marking them as equal holders of the distinction of being the first songs to reach the top 50 solely as a consequence of the new rules. Climbing into the top 50 this week is Tame Impala with a 3rd top 50 hit, all of which have arrived after the release of "The Slow Rush". Prior to this, Tame Impala had an endless supply of top 100 hits that didn't make the top 50.

Taylor Swift secures a 3rd consecutive week at #1. Tame Impala's fallen for the classic blunder, only slightly less famous than that of going into a land war in Asia. Never compete with a relatively new Taylor Swift album, when a #1 album streak is on the line. This is not the greatest L suffered by Tame Impala this year as Kevin Parker's favourite football team (he's the #1 ticket holder) was put in great shame by the state of Queensland. Firstly getting demolished at home by eventual premiers Brisbane, but then earning the ignobility of being the first (and so far only) club to lose a final to the Gold Coast Suns, once again at home, but this time they lost by 1 point after leading by a goal in the dying minutes. In this particular instance, pretend that Kevin Parker is Josh Treacy (Fremantle #35) and Taylor Swift is Ryan Lester (Brisbane #35), squandering a sure-fire goal due to hubris. I was at the game at this end of the stadium when it happened, funniest thing I've seen.

treacy lester.gif

Returning to the chart also this week is Ruel, reaching the top 10 for a 3rd time. While The Last Dinner Party have fallen short of their previous mark in the UK, they've actually improved quite a bit here, their debut album got to #35, now they're up at #7. Sabaton come through with their highest charting album this decade, while Ashnikko is seeing a new high. The Southern River Band are from Perth, and south of the river if you can believe it. They've released 5 albums now, and their 4th saw their chart breakthrough, while their 5th has them reaching the top 20 for the first time. Camp Cope has been disbanded for a couple of years now but return to the chart with the 2023 recording of their last ever show. Let's see if they don't LCD Soundsystem us, I'll have words on the band on my blog (which is now halfway complete!) at some point in the next 49 and a half weeks. Local singer WILSN charts for the first time. She's a powerhouse singer whose voice I've always likened to Jessica Mauboy. Lastly we've got country singer Andrew Swift who returns to the top 50 after his last album didn't quite get there.

"The Fate Of Ophelia" is #1 for a 4th week. It looks likely to be the last week but I suppose you can never count out chicanery (and she gets to be a musician! etc). It's now just a question whether the Halloween boost for "Golden" could upset the expected ascension of "Man I Need" for yet another week. RAYE scores a new peak this week and might be top 10 bound. We've got a peculiar situation with regards to the top 40 this week. "WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!" is the lowest peaking song in the top 39! Death of the moderate hit combined with some quirky chart pile ups. We've only got one new entry this week and it's another Olivia Dean. If not for this, we could have potentially had a second unchanged top 50 this year, something I still believe that the new rules will more likely cause than prevent.

Taylor Swift is #1 for a 4th week on the album chart as well. I'm not sure who has the clout to do anything to change that, so maybe it'll be a case of KPop Demon Hunters returning to #1 eventually. It's funny to think that Sabrina Carpenter is #4 this week, when earlier this year she was coasting an uncontested #1 spot under similar conditions. Not all chart weeks are created equally. A surprise late runner as one of the most successful contestants from the last season of the original Australian Idol run is James Johnston. It took him over a decade to release his first album, but now he's got two top 10s to his name. Probably doesn't beat Stan Walker's Aotearoa career, appearing in "Hunt For The Wilderpeople" has a lot of good will for me. What I suspect is a late bloomer for Lily Allen has her debuting at #6, and retaining a perfect top 10 record with all 5 of her albums. West Australian local Kito co-wrote most of the tracks on the album. I'm not sure she'll score any top 50 hits from the album though as they all seem to be trending backwards on Spotify. She had 6 songs in the top 200 a few days ago, but now barely has 2. Next is Dave who scores his 2nd top 10 album but has done the opposite to James Johnston, going from #5 to #7. "Raindance" was the highest new entry on Spotify this week but appears to be missing from the ARIA Chart (I'd expect it in the Bubbling Under chart), in case you thought the new rules might change that situation. I love any opportunity I get to talk about Something For Kate, one of Australia's best kept secrets, but one that I will willingly offer to introduce to others. If "Hallways" or "Monsters" were made by a US or UK band, they'd be analysed endlessly for their introspective lyrical prose. Anyway, they're a band that loves to do a cover, something that extends to very tall frontman Paul Dempsey. Back in 2013, he did a whole album like this called "Shotgun Karaoke". By popular demand, he's done it again with a Vol. II, and it's managed to reach the top 10 (which the original did not). I said on my blog a few months ago, if Paul Dempsey considers your song worthy of being covered, there are few greater honours. Speaking of very good singers, Daniel Caesar continues to score new highs with each successive album, hitting the top 20 for the first time now. Demi Lovato is saved by the new chart rules and continues to make the top 50 with every one of her albums. Dayseeker's 6th album is their first to make the top 50.

So proud of the Guys in my Signature "Cloning". They are an indie band from Western Australia with no industry support.

They have just debuted at Number 12 on the ARIA main Album Charts and Number 2 on the Australian Artist Chart with their debut Album "Vitriol" <3

"The Fate of Ophelia" is #1 for a 5th week. I'll admit I expected things to change hands based on Spotify trends but I guess I forgot about the variants. The trajectories are continuing, and Olivia Dean's local promo tour is imminent, so it's only a matter of time. RAYE scores her 3rd top 10 hit this week. It's a relatively quiet week but we've drawn first Showgirl blood as "Honey" falls out, so expect a courteous uptick in re-entries as I don't think there are particularly close songs hunting their first top 50 appearance. Actually we've only had two new songs pop up in the Spotify chart in the past 2 weeks, HAVEN looks to make a big arrival next week. Lily Allen just narrowly sneaks into the top 50 but will likely wind back next week. This is not a discouraging pattern, it's just very normal behaviour for a new album whose activity peaked just slightly later than day 1.

Taylor Swift is #1 on the albums chart for a 5th week, I'm used to this, you're used to this. Florence + The Machine have once again chosen a less ideal release week with three streaming juggernauts in tow. This makes it their first album to miss the top 3. Tyler, The Creator goes crazy on the physical sales to return to the top 5, while the best selling album on the chart this week is from Bernard Fanning. For the non-Australians, he's the lead singer of Powderfinger, probably the best selling Australian band of the last 30 years. "Tea & Sympathy" was Bernard's first solo album and a huge success, thanks to having the most overplayed song of 2005, "Wish You Well" on it (a song that never got a physical single and never charted). Local band Cloning chart for the first time, and it's actually on the back of formats other than vinyl where they don't crack that particular chart. The same can't be said of the other arrivals. Radiohead continue their haphazard pattern of releasing things that aren't new studio albums, it's almost like they don't want another #2 peaker. Hayley Williams scores a second top 50 album through a peculiar release pattern, her previous album in 2020 reached the top 10. We've also got another new Australian band, one with a decent amount of streaming traction behind them, The Belair Lip Bombs. Possibly ones to watch in the future.

"The Fate of Ophelia" is #1 for a 6th week. This is feeling even more incredulous than last week, so unless you believe in the magic wizardry of the select few seemingly being always able to pull the necessary sales out of their pockets and testing the limits of plausible deniability...this surely has to be the last week. Olivia Dean is probably in Australia right now because she's going to be at the ARIA Awards tomorrow and doing a single show in Sydney on Thursday. She's asserted the role of the artist who is taking up all of the precious Fleetwood Mac & Teddy Swims real estate as she's now got 8 songs in the Spotify top 50, just gains across the board. No need to jump the gun though, because she's taken it slowly enough to secure the chart classic with a full run of 07s for "So Easy (To Fall In Love)". It was very early in my chart watching life that I witnessed Mumford & Sons and "Little Lion Man" land the incredulous 16 16 16 16, and I've been starved for something of that scale ever since, even with streaming providing a new avenue for these kinds of slow crawls, it just hasn't been matched. The other thing I should probably address is Haven. It was the first game released by The Game Bakers after the breakout success of Furi, which as many would know is the video game that I hold dozens and dozens of speedrunning world records in...oh wait this should say HAVEN.. You're probably familiar with the story, but for future scholars, let it be known that you are all very handsome and loved for your tireless efforts, and also let it be known that "I Run" vaulted up to a cosy #3 on the Spotify chart by the end of last week. No one yet knows how far it could have gone, because 2 days later it stopped being available to stream and looks likely to join luminaries like Francesca's "Way of the World", Nirvana's "About A Girl (Acoustic)", and triple j's "Christmas Number 1" as singles that have debuted in the top 10 and disappeared from the top 50 the week after. There is one note that I just want to add to this whole story:

If you, like me, are an enjoyer of perusing the internet, potentially gathering information that you trust to be correct, you've got to return the favour. Don't go around presenting unsubstantiated information just because you heard it from someone else, or worse, you want it to be true to propel your point of view, so you delude yourself and others into believing it. I've heard no shortage of discussion around this HAVEN. track, about how it's Al generated. This could mean many different things. Sometimes it's just a vocal filter being used, when it's not specified it tends to imply the whole thing was generated from scratch, and I've even seen suggestion that HAVEN. himself does not exist. I'm not here to make a statement on what the truth is, because I don't know! Perhaps it'll come to light in the wash, but presenting vague telephoned statements provides nothing but noise surrounding the truth. It's why 13 years ago after a final inquest ruled her not guilty, you'll still find people who think that Lindy Chamberlain was involved in foul play back in 1980 when she said a dingo ate her baby. The reason I say this, is that if you truly despise the thought of a future world of Al music, don't give it power. There's too much performative over-reaction to what it's doing so far (I guess because clicks), but this is playing entirely into the Al tech bro's hand. What better coup than to prove that they were able to slip into instant virality and score a monster hit, only banished on a technicality. Consider the implication of your words, and don't make people waste time correcting you, fruitless to the impact they've already had, like a Community Note or appended tweet a day later. The damage is already done, and it'll only diminish your own credibility.

Taylor Swift is #1 for a 6th week on the album chart. I think she's primed to be upended because the streaming margins are starting to get challenged by KPop Demon Hunters and Olivia Dean, and failing that, I think 5 Seconds Of Summer have historically been very good at scoring #1 albums. It hadn't even crossed my mind until I saw how far ahead they were in the UK midweeks and I figure Australia still has some love. On the other hand, if the Taylor Swift campaign couldn't move aside for an Australian legend like Paul Kelly, then maybe the same thing will happen next week. I should always note that despite being a pretty notable figure since the 1980s, Paul Kelly didn't get his first #1 album until the late 2010s, and he notched up 3 in quick succession. I've made a shocking revelation this week that enough people are invested in the sombr experience to buy vinyl and send the album back into the top 5. Also making a big splash this week is Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Their debut album landed in the top 10 a couple of years ago and netted them a Best New Artist ARIA Award. I'll likely have some good words to say about them on my blog at some point in the next 46 weeks. Rosalía makes the top 50 for the first time ever and leaves plenty of space on the tarmac. A big name in the early '90s, James Blundell once had a #2 single in Australia. He's now charting for the first time since 1995, living up to the album title. West Australian icon Stella Donnelly returns with her 3rd album and 3rd to make the top 50. Cosmic Psychos have released a few more albums than that but are also charting for the 3rd time. They had a beer coloured vinyl variant for this one.
