Posted January 28Jan 28 6p-lDYPR2P8 23 January 1985 saw the release of 'Material Girl', the second single from Madonna's second album, 'Like a Virgin'. The lyrics provide a satirical message of materialism and Madonna played upon this with the music video, paying homage to Marilyn Monroe's performance of 'Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend' in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which was interspersed with scenes of her being won over by a man that shows love through flowers, not expensive gifts. It was another big worldwide hit and has held up as one of Madonna's signature songs, currently her third most streamed song on Spotify. Share your thoughts and memories of 'Material Girl' below!
January 28Jan 28 Author What a 1-2 punch 'Like a Virgin' and 'Material Girl' were for Madonna! She may not have had a hand in writing either of them but they both capture what she wanted her music to say at the time so well. I prefer 'Material Girl' of the two and it's been one that I've grown to love a lot more than I have in the past. It's a shame it didn't get a big TV performance; I know she appeared and presented an award at the American Music Awards (one of my favourite 80s Madonna looks) and a song this iconic deserves a memorable TV performance. From the tour performances, Re-invention and Rebel Heart are my faves: kQwuAVJ4TnI swoWs3n_7Qs
January 30Jan 30 I go between loving Material Girl and finding it a bit too cheesy. I nearly always skip Like a Virgin and often I'll keep going and move out this one as well. But actually, it's the first song by Madonna that made me actually take an interest. I can remember seeing the video when I was young and thinking she was amazing. Then my brother bought my the Like a Virgin album for Christmas and the rest is history. So it's far from one of my faves, but it is a great song, the video propels it and it played a very important part in my love of Madonna.
January 30Jan 30 I still can't believe there are people out there who take the lyrics literally and don't realise it's satire.
January 30Jan 30 MADONNA: "Do you think I'm a material girl?" The CROWD goes wild!! MADONNA: "Well you are WRONG! I'm not a material girl... ... I don't need money, I need love!!"
January 30Jan 30 ^ 👏 how iconic is the VT !! She also looks beautiful in the video!! Edited January 30Jan 30 by vibe
January 31Jan 31 Author Also, who can forget its association with this? pFNcBB3nZok Forgot all about this! This really highlights how similar the production on ‘Material Girl’ is to ‘Can You Feel It’ by Jackson 5, which obviously The Tamperer sampled on the single previous, ‘Feel It’.
January 31Jan 31 Author I go between loving Material Girl and finding it a bit too cheesy. I nearly always skip Like a Virgin and often I'll keep going and move out this one as well. This has been my relationship with it too (same with ‘Like a Virgin’) but I’m firmly in the love camp now. I think I’ve previously begrudged it for being the first song people associate with Madonna when I know there’s so many really fantastic songs in her career that get overlooked. I think that’s how Madonna feels too.
February 2Feb 2 Ive always liked material girl and do think its overlooked alot of the time. Of all Madonna songs, I've never thought of this one as being overlooked. It's practically synonymous with her!
