April 30Apr 30 Author Kendrick Lamar & SZA’s ‘Luther’ Leads Hot 100 for Landmark 10th WeekBy Gary Trust | 04/28/2025Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” tops the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a milestone 10th total and consecutive week. The single, whose title honors late R&B great Luther Vandross, who is sampled on it, became Lamar’s sixth No. 1 and SZA’s third. Lamar and SZA each extend their longest career Hot 100 reigns with the song.An elite 4% of all Hot 100 No. 1s (46 of 1,179, dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, start) have ruled for double-digit weeks. Of those, “Luther” is the first by a solo man and woman and no accompanying acts, surpassing the nine-week reign of Diana Ross and Lionel Richie’s “Endless Love” in 1981. (Among other 10-plus-week No. 1s by co-billed lead male and female acts, Puff Daddy and Faith Evans’ “I’ll Be Missing You” — featuring vocal group 112 — led for 11 weeks in 1997 and Mariah Carey and then-quartet Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” dominated for 16 weeks in 1995-96.)Plus, Alex Warren’s first Hot 100 top 10, “Ordinary,” hits a new high (5-3), and reaches No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, and Morgan Wallen and Post Malone’s “I Ain’t Coming Back” debuts at No. 8 on the Hot 100, becoming their 15th and 14th top 10, respectively. It’s the sixth top 10 from Wallen’s album I’m the Problem — all ahead of its May 16 release, as he extends his record for the most top 10s from an album before its arrival.“Luther,” on pgLang/Interscope/ICLG, totaled 68.4 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 1% week-over-week), 21.9 million official streams (down 13%), and 2,000 sold (down 14%) in the U.S. April 18-24. (A week earlier, its chart performance was boosted by the April 11 premiere of its official video.)“Luther” leads Radio Songs for a fourth week and dips to No. 3 following seven weeks atop Streaming Songs.“Luther” concurrently collects an 18th week at No. 1 on both the multimetric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Two weeks after “Ordinary” became Alex Warren’s first Hot 100 top 10, the song pushes 5-3 for a new best. It concurrently crowns Streaming Songs for the first time, with 21 million streams (up 3%). (While the song’s sum of raw streams is the week’s second-highest, after “Luther,” “Ordinary” tops Streaming Songs due to the application of weighting to all titles’ paid/subscription and ad-supported on-demand streams and programmed/radio streams.)A week earlier, “Ordinary” became Warren’s first No. 1 on Digital Song Sales, where it descends to No. 3, although with a 7% gain to 7,000 sold.Morgan Wallen and Post Malone’s “I Ain’t Coming Back” bows at No. 8 on the Hot 100. Released April 18, it totaled 19.5 million streams, 2.9 million in airplay audience and 6,000 sold in its first week. The song further ushers in Wallen’s fourth studio album, I’m the Problem, due May 16; his tour of the same name is set to launch June 20. It’s his sixth song from the set (all are confirmed as on its tracklist) to hit the top 10 – extending the record for the most Hot 100 top 10s from an album before its release. Here’s a recap of the collection’s top 10s to date:“I Ain’t Coming Back,” with Post Malone, No. 8 debut & peak to date, May 3, 2025“Just in Case,” No. 4 debut & peak, April 5“I’m the Problem,” No. 2 debut & peak, Feb. 15“Smile,” No. 4 peak, Jan. 18“Love Somebody,” No. 1 debut & peak, one week, Nov. 2, 2024“Lies Lies Lies,” No. 7 debut & peak, July 20(Previously, Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding, in 2019, and Taylor Swift’s Red, in 2012, each generated four Hot 100 top 10s before debuting, each at No. 1, on the Billboard 200 albums chart.)Elsewhere in the Hot 100’s top 10, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” keeps at No. 2, following five nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in January.Drake’s “Nokia” drops 3-4 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2.Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” rebounds 5-4 on the Hot 100, following its record-tying 19 weeks at No. 1 beginning last July. It adds a 42nd week atop the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart.Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” backtracks to No. 6 from its No. 4 Hot 100 high, and Wallen’s “I’m the Problem” climbs 10-7.Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” which led the Hot 100 for a week in March 2024, and became the year’s No. 1 song, descends 7-10, as it tallies a record-extending 59th week in the top 10; a week earlier, it surpassed the 57-week run in the region of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” for the most such frames in the chart’s history. “Lose Control” first hit the top 10 on the list dated Jan. 20, 2024, and has been absent from the tier for only eight weeks since.“Lose Control” notches an 88th week on the Hot 100 overall, one-upping Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” in 2012-14, for the sole third-longest stay in the chart’s history. The only hits with longer runs: Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” (91 weeks, in 2021-22) and “Blinding Lights” (90, in 2019-22).Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” holds at No. 9, after it hit No. 2 in March 2024.Jack Black Breaks Hot 100 Record With 34-Second ‘Minecraft Movie’ Song: Here Are the 10 Quickest Hot 100 HitsBy Gary Trust | 4/28/2025It'll take longer to read this story than to listen to "Steve's Lava Chicken."Hit songs are generally quick — Billboard Hot 100 top 10s ran an average of three minutes and 40 seconds in 2024, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed — but no Hot 100 hit has ever been as brief as Jack Black’s “Steve’s Lava Chicken.”The track — at just 34 seconds in its original form (with a still-swift 1:15 extended mix also released) — breaks the record as the shortest Hot 100 hit ever by run time, dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, inception. The cut from the soundtrack of A Minecraft Movie debuts at No. 77 on the list dated May 3, 2025. It continues to gain in streaming, surging 62% to 7 million official U.S. streams April 18-24, according to data tracker Luminate.Black co-stars in A Minecraft Movie, which has grossed $816 million globally over its first four weekends of release. Black and the film’s director, Jared Hess, co-wrote “Steve’s Lava Chicken” and John Spiker produced it.Black earns his second Hot 100 hit, after “Peaches” reached No. 56 in April 2023. That song was from the soundtrack to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, likewise co-starring Black.Elsewhere, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” hits the top 10 on the Hot Rock Songs chart, pushing four spots to No. 10.Meanwhile, the track is one of four by Black on the A Minecraft Movie soundtrack, along with “I Feel Alive” — featuring Dave Grohl on drums — and two others each less than a minute long: “Birthday Rap,” with co-star Jason Momoa, and “Ode to Dennis.”“Steve’s Lava Chicken” surpasses Kid Cudi’s “Beautiful Trip,” which runs 37 seconds long, as the quickest Hot 100 hit by song length.Below, take a look, as long as you’d like, at the 10 quickest Hot 100 hits by run time over the chart’s history (with assistance from Paul Haney at Joel Whitburn’s Record Research).:34 — “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” Jack BlackHot 100 peak: No. 77, May 3, 2025 (to date):37 — “Beautiful Trip,” Kid CudiHot 100 peak: No. 100, Dec. 26, 2020:45 — “PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen),” Piko-TaroHot 100 peak: No. 77, Oct. 29, 20161:02 — “Little Boxes,” The WomenfolkHot 100 peak: No. 83, April 25, 19641:06 — “Deck the Halls,” Nat King ColeHot 100 peak: No. 16, Dec. 31, 20221:13 — “Pete Davidson,” Ariana GrandeHot 100 peak: No. 99, Sept. 1, 20181:16 — “Difference (Interlude),” XXXTentacionHot 100 peak: No. 84, Dec. 22, 20181:17 — “Some Kind-A Earthquake,” Duane Eddy His Twangy Guitar and the RebelsHot 100 peak: No. 37, Oct. 26, 19591:19 — “Forward,” Beyoncé feat. April 30Apr 30 US HOT 100 29.04.25 #29 THE TOP TEN: 10. Beautiful Things – Benson Boone (Down 1/65 weeks in chart) 9. Lose Control – Teddy Swims (Down 2/88 weeks in chart) 8. I Ain't Coming Back – Morgan Wallen/Post Malone (NEW) 7. I'm The Problem – Morgan Wallen (Up 3/12 weeks in chart) 6. Pink Pony Club – Chappell Roan (Down 2/45 Weeks in Chart) 5. A Bar Song (Tipsy) – Shaboozey (Up 1/54 weeks in chart) 4. Nokia – Drake (Down 1/10 weeks in chart) 3. Ordinary – Alex Warren (Up 2/NEW PEAK/11 weeks in chart) 2. Die With A Smile – Lady Gaga/Bruno Mars (No Change/36 Weeks in Chart) 1. Luther – Kendrick Lamar/SZA (No Change/10th consecutive week number one/22nd week in the chart) NEW ENTRIES: 98. House Again – Hudson Westbrook (3/10) Having to describe these insanely tedious American country songs over and over after the Billboard chart shoves them in our faces is insane. From now on, any basic guitar, country song that I've described a million times is just getting a low rating. I'm not putting up with this anymore. 96. Actin Up – Tommy Richman (7/10) This most likely only charted due to the Sexyy Red remix, but I'll only rate the original. It has that old-school funky hip-hop sound that is what Tommy works well on; it's better than 'Million Dollar Baby' and 'Devil Is A Lie' by far. Sure, it's similar to them, but Tommy's fun essence comes out a lot more on this. What we didn't need was a Sexyy Red remix, though. 95. Party 4 U – Charli XCX (2/10) Why is she back AGAIN? And how can people stand minutes of autotuned, repetitive, easily made dance music? It's worse than generic, and it's pretty disturbing how people can find a song at the level of AI anything interesting. Let's hope the resurfacing of the track from 'How I'm Feeling Now' disappears because we don't need this. 92. Whim Whamiee – PLUTO/YKNIECE (0/10) From the title and cover, I expected this to be a one out of ten song, and it was somehow even worse than that expectation. It's gangsta rap that sounds like a mix of Sexyy Red and Bhad Bhabie, as the lead vocals are more irritating than scraping your fingernails on metal. Think of it as a rich gangsta lady with pounds of makeup starting to whine on a song. I don't get how in a million years anything like this ends up charting or reaching public notice; this is diabolical and is easily one of the worst rap songs I've heard in my time alive. 91. Forever To Me – Cole Swindell (5/10) This is about a Christian country song about a boy meeting up with a country girl, as a love song. It uses guitar and drums to really bring out the forgettable American country sound. I'm not denying that there's emotion here, but damn, it isn't built on well – low effort. 87. Headphones On – Addison Rae (4/10) Yay! Yet another female pop act who fails to impress no matter what they release; that's another added to my list of the ones I dislike. I've never been a fan of Addison and wasn't expecting anything good out of this, especially seeing she's been on an insane streak of bad, but this is actually better than her usual; 4/10 is an improvement... but overall this is still just some forgettable pop song. 78. Steve's Lava Chicken - Jack Black (5/10) You've got to be kidding me… a 34-second song of Jack Black singing about Minecraft's Lava Chicken. I knew the movie had a huge first-week breakthrough, but it didn't really bring anything good out of it apart from brain rot, like this. This is like the time 'Man In Finance' charted last year. I'm not even going to take this seriously; it's guitar rock with Jack Black saying words in the strange ways he does. Let's just hope this randomness leaves the chart. 72. You're Ways Better – Forrest Frank (4/10) Oh boy, does this have to be the guy who makes Christian music go viral again? We could at least try to switch up the genre better to accompany more unknown sounds and mix things up, but this is straight up just a social media song where the vocal holds on "together" & "head" and other words make it sound unnecessarily annoying. 71. Happens To Me – Russell Dickenson (4.9/10) Reminds me of that really cringe country song which charted last year (I've forgotten the name of it). This is country combined with modern pop elements to make a more upbeat guitar song which doesn't just focus on the guitar to control the melody; it feels like the production has a lot of layers going on, but all just feel like they equal a really dull song that's a bad attempt to go mainstream. 8. I Ain't Coming Back – Morgan Wallen/Post Malone (7/10) After hearing this and finding out Tate McRae is on the album – I'm hyped! This legit might be a good album... but I'm still scared about there being 37 songs on it. This is a classic country song with a more pop radio hook, which is a good follow-up from the 'I Had Some Help' collab. Post delivered a good verse alongside Morgan, but Morgan did better. The use of drums added to the instrumental effect, which I quite enjoyed. RE-ENTRIES: None. NOTEABLE CHANGES: Songs that fell 10 spots or more: 100.
