You're right I guess, maybe it's cos I fail to see his appeal

what I don't get in 2025 is why no songs are exploding in streams... only Alex is capable of >500K, the rest are barely doing 300K max. Old Phone on day 2 didn't even do 100K.

Even Alex at #1 is doing over 500K but just so. That's so True was doing much better figures.

Least you admit your own bias 🤣

I think he has more chances of missing the top 100 than dethroning himself, that's what tiktok artists re in 2025

🫠It will be interesting to see exactly how it does but this is a very bizarre view.

We'll see I guess. I think it's more of a bizarre view thinking he will replace himself at #1 but alas

I know typically those who have viral hits struggle to get follow-ups, but let's not forget that four of Alex's five charting hits actually made the top 100 in their first week of release (Before You Leave Me debuted top 100 in its second week of release) so he's obviously been building a following already. Burning Down even debuted top 40, so I'd be shocked if his next release didn't chart at all.

I think the idea of him dethroning himself is probably unlikely, on debut at least, though it's not impossible. Even Please Please Please "only" debuted at #3 (Sabrina's best debut position, until Taste of course) after how huge Espresso had become, albeit on sales of 78k but that says a lot about the sales landscape of early to mid 2024! I'd say whatever comes next will probably need some sort of viral presence already to come anywhere near #1, certainly in terms of a debut, but I'd be gobsmacked if it didn't chart at least top 40.

Old Phone down to #175 on day 3! Unbelievable!

Not that I'm going to try and defend 175 on Day 3, but it really feels a bit soon for Ed's second official single to me, Azizam is a month old and a lot of people are still getting into that, such is the way of the slow charts. If the album isn't out until September, I don't get why official single No.2 is out in May.

Either way, the song doesn't sound like a hit to me (whereas Azizam did, and has been) and I said as much on first listen on Friday. It's not a very easy singalong/radio type song as it's so personal to Ed. I'm surprised he's made it a single, it would have made sense as a grat to me like Visting Hours or How Would You Feel. But I guess it's just something he was keen for more people to hear.

Just put Ed in the same category as Coldplay, Elton John etc and it’ll be easier than trying to explain away his streaming struggles. He could sellout Wembley tomorrow but getting big streaming numbers is not happening no matter what he releases or when

It doesn't feel like a proper second single , he hasn't thrown all the bells and whistles at it like he normally does, yes it's been playlisted but that's about it

To me it feels like how would you feel was to divide and visiting hours to equals

It's a good song but it doesn't exactly scream hit

Ed's new stuff is streaming way better than Elton's which never would've been close to the Spotify charts, and is doing a fair bit better than Coldplay's stuff did!

At the rate he's going he's gonna release half the album as pre-album singles by the time it comes out

everybody's gonna scream "Stop" or "Eject" rather than "Play" hahaha :D

lol people comparing Ed to Elton. If Elton released a brand new solo single this Friday, it would be track #27 on NMF,

would not be added to any playlist whatsoever and wouldn't make the Spotify top 200 for all the money in the world.

Not the Elton comparison tearsmile

Old Phone definitely isn't performing particularly well so far, not to say it can't recover. I agree it's much too soon for single 2, especially when there's still a long way until the album release! Guessing the plan is to get at least 3 streaming hits established to buoy the album's streaming figures beyond the curiosity streams on week 1 (though Old Phone doesn't look like it'll be much use on that front so far).

Can we just hold on for a minute? Lets just acknowledge Ed Sheeran is not the streaming/selling juggernaut he was 7/8 years ago- that was to be expected. Azizam has been an underperformance- but still successful and will probably go on to be a long running hit. I should imagine his album will still sell well - not 2014/2017 well but for 2025, it will be successful. He will still manage to sell out stadiums (and thats where the money is made).
