Robbie Williams' first time in Colombia: the king of 'Britpop' conquered Bogotá with his hits 'Angels', 'Rock DJ' and a curious mockery of Oasis

The atmosphere outside the Movistar Arena in Bogotá predicted that it would not be just another concert on the international agenda. Among the crowd there was a markedly millennial and 'thirties' pulse, a generation that grew up with the MTV of the two thousand and that arrived wearing red sweatshirts, a direct nod to the emblematic wardrobe of the British singer, flags of the United Kingdom and even some monkey masks, in explicit reference to 'Better Man', the biopic inspired by the life of the artist.

At 7:50 p.m., the British The Lottery Winners came out to warm up the night. The indie pop group delivered a repertoire full of contagious passion that shook an audience that barely discovered them. Songs like 'Much Better' connected in such a way with the stands that their vocalist came to shout excitedly: "We are very famous!", before finishing off by saying that Latin America had the best audience and leaving a message to the owner of the night: "You're going to love this, Williams".

After the departure of the opening acts, the expectation took over the arena. The interval felt long, crossed by the collective anxiety of seeing, for the first time in Colombia, the British showman par excellence.

The wait ended abruptly. Robbie Williams burst onto the stage wearing his classic red sweatshirt and attacking from the start with 'Let Me Entertain You'. The impact was immediate: as soon as he began to sing, he took off his jacket and threw it on stage with the self-confidence that characterizes him, and then put it back on laughing. The stage presence of the Briton flooded the place. Moving with ease and a marked play of the pelvis, he pointed to the stands, laughed and returned the looks. He danced with an unexpected rhythm by European standards and maintained a constant mischief, even when interpreting songs with more melancholic nuances. From the closest sectors, shouts of "I love you!" and praise for his physical display did not stop raining down on him.

The energy displayed by the Colombians was so great that he noticed it, looked at the audience in surprise, knelt down and shouted: "Hello, Bogotá. What a chimba!" He also said that although he loves his European audience, he does not compare to the Latin American one.

The show continued with 'Rock DJ', a burst of energy that started when Williams asked the audience: "Still got it?". The response came in the form of an ovation that provoked in the singer a sorrowful and friendly "Thank you, thank you" in Spanish.

Then came 'Supreme', another of the euphoric moments of the night, followed by 'Relight My Fire', by Dan Hartman. The show combined its characteristic irreverence with moments of pure theatricality and musical power. The team of choristers offered an impeccable vocal and choreographic display, backed by a soundtrack that sounded clear and strong throughout the evening.

During the cover of 'New York, New York', the aesthetic proposal took a dazzling turn by evoking the atmosphere of the fifties, with a wardrobe that paid homage to the aesthetics of Marilyn Monroe in her pink dress from 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', released in 1953.

In another passage of the night, Robbie took time to reflect on his biopic 'Better Man'. He mentioned that the film concludes dramatically at his massive and historic Knebworth concert in 2003, but clarified that, although the film ends at that professional milestone, his real life began when he met his wife, Ayda Field. In addition, he brought out his characteristic humor by boasting with laughter that he has four children and that they are all from the same wife.

However, the heart of the show was built in proximity. In several stretches, Williams broke the distance, coming down from the stage to be embraced by the crowd around him.

This is how he approached the area where Sofía, president of his fan club in Colombia, was located. After engaging in a brief conversation in which she shared that at the age of 12 she was bullied and that her music saved her life, the singer wrapped her in a deep and intimate hug that moved the arena before dedicating 'She's the One' to her.

Next to Sofia was Lina. Robbie turned to her to ask how she was doing and how old she was. Noticing that Lina was 36 years old and did not speak English, a companion named Claudia stepped in to translate. Lina told him that she had gone through an episode of serious illness. Sensitized, Robbie promised her that everyone present in the room would pray for her.

He then began to perform 'My Way', changing the original lyrics of 'I did it my way' for a direct and warm 'You do it your way'. Looking into her eyes and pointing at her with candor, he emphasized the phrase where he predicts that he will live, giving one of the most emotionally charged moments of the evening.

The night then advanced to 'Wonderwall', the anthem of Oasis. Before performing it, Williams threw a jab at the Gallagher brothers saying that he didn't care if they didn't give him permission to sing it, because the only ones he had to ask for authorization were the Colombians.

"Colombians, can I sing the song?" he asked, unleashing a collective ovation that gave way to a massive chorus of the Britock classic.

The concert continued with an overwhelming version of 'Feel', which brought tears to the stands. The song took the evening to one of its most intimate moments, before the show picked up steam again towards the closing.

For the final closing, Robbie Williams returned to the stage wearing the yellow jersey of the Colombian National Team, decorated with his characteristic geometric patterns on the sides. The crowd erupted. With the tricolor shield on his chest, he started with the first chords of 'Angels'.

At the end of the song, Williams kissed the crest of the jersey and addressed the attendees to thank them, assuring that they were a wonderful audience. He bowed with his entire band and, after the formal farewell, re-entered the stage alone.

He walked slowly from one end to the other, staring at the crowd with teary eyes and threatening not to want to retreat. With a mixture of awe and contained gratitude, he took the last minutes to contemplate the Movistar Arena between uninterrupted applause before turning around and leaving the stage definitively on his long-awaited debut night in the country.
