Posted June 14Jun 14 Finally the result you've all been waiting for with bated breath!!! Buzzjack's favourite solo Spice #1 goes to the one and only...NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN!It was a double finale for Melanie with both of her #1 singles reaching the final two. In second place was I turn to you, the summer Ibiza tinged dance smash of 2000. After having a Hex Hector remix it went straight in at #1 in the UK (as well as Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and the US Dance chart). The single has gone Gold in the UK selling over 420,000 copies and even won Hex Hector a Grammy award for it's remix! It helped to cement Melanie as one of the biggest UK artists of the year 2000 with her album going triple platinum. and repeaking at #4In first place is Melanie's first solo #1 single! An RnB tinged pop number with a feature from Lisa Left Eye Lopez saw the combining of two powerhouses from two of the 90's biggest girl groups Spice Girls and TLC. The song was the one that turned it all round for Melanie. After three top 5 singles of which one had gone platinum (when you're gone #3), one had gone silver (northern star #4) and one had not certified with around 100,000 sales (going down #4), the album had only managed a #10 peak and wasn't selling well. Never be the same again, reversed the albums fortunes and sent it back up to #5 helping it to start shifting big numbers. The single remains Melanie's second best selling solo single with sales of over 480,000 copies in the UK and it also achieved #1 positions in The Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand and Sweden, a fitting winner to this competition.Thank you everyone for taking part! 😁
June 15Jun 15 Author I feel like the girls really missed out on chances at American success.Geri - Mi chico latino not being pushed to radio / released when the whole latin sound was massive on US radio at the time was a mis-step. Could have had a chance of getting a small hit and pushing the album sales more. She did manage to chart at #42 with Schizophonic afterall.Melanie C - When you're gone not being pushed in the USA when Bryan Adams was / is quite a big name over there (5 top 10 albums and 17 top 20 singles) was a missed opportunity for Melanie to get her name out as a solo artist.Never be the same again not being pushed with it's RnB tinged sound which was huge in the USA plus Lisa Left Eye being on the track a combination of 2 huge girl band members that saw massive success in the USA.I turn to you really gained traction on US radio all by itself and the record company did nothing to capitalise on it.Melanie B -I want you back not being pushed with it's Missy Elliot connection is possibly the biggest missed chance at a hit of them all.
June 17Jun 17 Never Be The Same Again is the reason the Spice Girls ended in 2000. Had it not been as successful as it was, you can bet Mel 'im a real musician' C would have crawled right back to the group instead of behaving like a brat back then about the very group that made it possible for her to even have a solo album in the first place. So it is always tainted for me. And personally, even though I like the song, I don't think it is 'all that'. It's a good pop-r'n'b track and that's that.
