some faves here, Roxette and Black Velvet topped my charts, and Black Velvet will always remind me of my first Florida holiday, sultry and Blues-ey. Kim and Dirty Cash both peaked at 2 and still love

Lovely choice of number 1 there, I loved It Must Have Been Love and it was the song that really got me into Rosette for a couple of albums. It's also the first song I sung on karaoke - a very long tim

I’m with Julian in that it’s the equal of their other early 90s hits for me… but each to their own!

Yes I'm with the consensus here - for me KLF could do nor wrong and they had 5 classic unstoppable 10/10's in a row, epic, joyous, rousing and were act of the year, not even close. And then that was that pretty much The End. Going out on OTT top.

Now I have to assume you are trolling us!!! 🤣

I know Justified and Ancient is a touch novelty, but I think it’s one of the most joyous songs and it never fails to make me smile

4 Michael Jackson - Black or White

This is so close to a 7.0 and some days it is. The video is a touch maximalist, which is probably the point. I do like that it's joyous and inclusive. The head morphing hasn't dated at all. 13th best seller of the year.

Another one I bought. I really enjoyed the Dangerous album and this was a catchy enough lead single from it. I remember it feeling like such an event with loads of media coverage around the video.

I deliberately haven‘T checked what’s to come but so far I’d be

1 3am Eternal

2 Should I Stay Or Should I Go

3 Black Or White

Black And White was a great single to lead an album off, so that actually makes a change from Thriller and Bad. The video was fun, the late George Wendt aka Norm form Cheers, and young Macauley featuring. But the morphing was ripped off from Godley & Creme ex of 10cc - see Cry 1985, much lower budget available. It's among my faves of those so far, but not above KLF and a couple of others.

But the face morphing tech is on a different scale in Black and White. The idea was copied but I wouldn't discredit

it because it was so well done.

3 Extreme - More than Words

I didn't think this would be as high as 3 when I started this. It's rather lovely. I know it will have few fans around here, and most probably, some haters.

16th best seller of 1991

2 James - Sit Down

I've never really liked this song much until now. I still don't like the chorus. The verses are great in a sort of comforting, "we're all in this together" inclusivity way. The have, of course, many better songs and I particularly like their 1997 album Whiplash.

20th best seller of 1991.

1 Diana Ross - When You Tell Me That You Love Me

I know there's little difference between this and the likes of Wind Beneath My Wings or You Raise Me Up. I just like it.

It would have been Christmas number 1 if Freddie Mercury hadn't died. Finished as 17th best seller of the year.

Colm's score 7.5

I like the Extreme track, I went to see them in concert off the back of it and the follow-ups, and their Mandela concert performance, it's very sweet. Sit Down is an anthem, james were and are still great and have oodles of top records, but this is the show-stopper, so good it came back again later in the 90's. Diana in her heyday got the Cream of Motown's creative output, and has had an amazing career, but I wasnt quite as much a fan of her later stuff on EMI - though this is better than the cover with Westlife - though Ms. Ross is a huge fan of this track. I prefer the Tame Impala Minions song m'self!

My ranking for 1990:

1 It Must Have Been Love

2 A Little Time

3 U Can’t Touch This

4 Black Velvet

5 Dirty Cash

6 Don’t Worry

7 Get Up

8 Nessun Dorma

9 Turtle Power

10 Itsy Bitsy

That’s a brilliant top 5! “Nessun Dorma” is great in context but I’m not a fan of it as a standalone clip.

My ranking for 1991:

1 3AM Eternal

2 Sit Down

3 Should I Stay Or Should I Go

4 More Than Words

5 When You Tell Me That You Love Me

6 Black Or White

7 Get Ready For This

8 Sunshine On A Rainy Day

9 Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me

10 Let’s Talk About Sex

1991 was definitely quite mid overall, but I’d rank them:

1 3AM Eternal

2 Black or White

3 More Than Words

4 Should I Stay Or Should I Go

5 Sit Down

6 When You Tell Me That You Love Me

7 Let’s Talk About Sex

8 Sunshine On a Rainy Day

9 Get Ready For This

10 Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me

I really like the top 3 but wouldn’t choose to listen to any of the others really

Glad to see some appreciation for 'More Than Words'! It would be my favourite of the 1991 list, followed by 'Sit Down', 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' and '3AM Eternal', all of which I prefer to anything on the 1990 list.
