August 22, 2025Aug 22 'It Must've Been Love' and 'Black Velvet' are my fave two from 1990 and I agree with your top 4 for 1991. 'More Than Words' is a lovely record. I enjoy The Clash song but not a big fave and the George/Elton collab is fine.
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Author oooh. I'm surprised that More than Words is getting such support. I thought I'd have been given some sort of warning for liking it :D
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Author 1992 is decent. Much more enjoyable than 1991. 4 number 1s amongst the bunch. Edited August 23, 2025Aug 23 by Colm
August 24, 2025Aug 24 Author 10 Luther Vandross And Janet Jackson With Special Guests BBD And Ralph TresvantThere's nothing wrong with this. I just find it less interesting than anything else in the 1992 list. It was released in the summer so that might explain it's good chart performance.I thought I'd enjoy this more than I do. It finished the year as the 17th best sellerColm's score 6.6
August 24, 2025Aug 24 I agree. I’m not sure what else is to come but I never thought this was as good as its component parts. Plus I always think it sounds quite lacklustre, not helped by me remembering the later reissue (and remix) more than the original.
August 24, 2025Aug 24 I always liked this, but it's been surprisingly resilient on radio since and sales in the 90's to the extent that I'd much rather hear most other Janet Jackson oldies. Luther got a long-waited-for big hit out of it though, so that was nice.
August 24, 2025Aug 24 “The Best Things In Life Are Free” was terminally overplayed by my local radio station - even well into the ‘00s it was still a big favourite. So I’d quite happily never hear it again.
August 26, 2025Aug 26 Author 9 Right Said Fred - Deeply DippyI expected this to get last place for 1992 but it's improved a lot over the years. While listening to it, I found myself wondering how it would sound if it was covered by the Divine Comedy. I think it would work really well.12th best seller of 1992.Colm's score 6.7
August 26, 2025Aug 26 Never that much of a fan of Deeply Dippy, over-familiarity at the time came on quite quickly, though it was good natured enough. Don't Talk Just Kiss or a later minor hit or two were better tracks. I can see the Divine Comedy vibe.
August 26, 2025Aug 26 Author 8 The Shamen - Ebeneezer GoodeThe Shamen didn't leave the top 40 between 18th July 1992 and the following January - such was their single release schedule.I like the verses. I don't really like the chorus. Finished the year as the 13th best seller. Colm's score 6.8
August 27, 2025Aug 27 “I’m Too Sexy” is a guilty pleasure.“Deeply Dippy” isn’t, though it’s harmless enough. The Shamen were a force of nature and EG is a unique #1. I doubt I’ll prefer many of the top 7.
August 27, 2025Aug 27 Eb Goode is a great-sounding track but the chorus isn't great, a curious mixture of appearing to be gimmicky for kids but pushing drug use while being annoying. I realise it was and is rife in the clubbing world culture (seen it myself), but really it had dodgy plausible deniability to avoid getting banned at the time so I will stick with Move Any Mountain and other Shamen tracks.
August 27, 2025Aug 27 I quite like all of these so far, with Ebeneezer Goode being my favourite.I was a bit obsessed with the Shamen at this point and I loved all the singles from Boss Drum (well, I don’t love the 8 minute ambient one but I was intrigued by it). I think Ebeneezer Goode has held up pretty well, I particularly like the 12” mix with the slightly hypnotic chanting(?) at the beginning and the slower build - I’d probably still rate it a 9 or so.
August 27, 2025Aug 27 Author They were quite entertaining. They had a sense of humour too. The performance of Phorever People on the a Christmas Top of the Pops was great. 😀
August 27, 2025Aug 27 I'm going to have to look that one up as I can't remember it off hand.I always felt like they took over from the KLF a bit in terms of making big fun dance singles, whilst having more 'serious' stuff on the albums.
