Biography

Lewis Capaldi’s first two albums—2019’s Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent and 2023’s Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent—broadcast their messy emotional content right there in those sprawling titles. “I think we all attempt to be heavenly sent,” the former Up Next artist told Apple Music in 2023, explaining the latter title. “Everyone strives to be good at something, or find some sort of purpose. And sometimes, in the pursuit of that, it can leave you feeling a bit dejected.” And make no mistake: Capaldi has become one of the most popular young artists of his generation by preserving his songs in a raw, unvarnished state, providing the purest representation of the pain and longing coursing through his lyrics. Amidst the hyper-paced, totally wired world of late-2010s pop, this unassuming Scottish singer-songwriter—born in 1996 in Glasgow—stopped the internet dead in its tracks with his DIY 2017 single “Bruises,” a stark, piano-based breakup ballad that introduced a voice imbued with the sort of soulful grit and deeply felt heartache you wouldn’t expect from a baby-faced 21-year-old. That song was Capaldi’s ticket to major-label deals and tours opening for pop A-listers like Sam Smith and Niall Horan, but he would swiftly join their ranks with Divinely Uninspired…, which fleshed out his sound with lush orchestration and gospel gravitas but retained his fearless flair for emotional dredging. Capaldi proved no less forthcoming on Broken By Desire…, counterbalancing all his success with self-deprecating lyrical turns. Though he took a break from touring after releasing the album in order to improve his mental and physical health, that decisive step felt just as real and necessary as the doubt and passion he airs in his songs. - Apple Music

Now, it's time to travel back to February 1996 with Mark Goodier at the hosting chair of the Top 40 for number 23 now.

Only downside to POTP is when they choose to go back to the 70s when sounds of the 70s is on right before that

Is your anger driving you to demand a recount to give Chappell the deserved number one?

I bet it's not going to end at 5:45pm unless Alex skips a couple of songs between now and 11.

Biography

A year or so after 2010’s Thank Me Later hit, Drake was browsing art in LA when a neon sign caught his eye: “LESS DRAKE, MORE TUPAC.” At first, he felt like ripping it off the wall. Instead, he bought it. After all, he figured if someone puts your name next to Tupac, you must be doing something right. Born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto in 1986, he—like Tupac—became the voice of a generation and prism for his pop-cultural moment, starting with 2011’s sumptuous Take Care, a career-defining magnum opus that’s included in Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list. Was he an R&B singer who rapped or a rapper who sang? Was he really that sad, or just exploiting a cultural preference for male vulnerability? From the jump, he let his contradictions define him: tender but cruel, sober one minute and drunk-dialing the next, a guy who could convince you he was an underdog from his perch on top of the world. Yet as lurid as his inner world is, the proof lies in his reach outward. A Drake project can incorporate house and club music (2017’s More Life, 2022’s Honestly, Nevermind) and red-eyed trap (2022’s 21 Savage collab Her Loss) with equal conviction and at no loss to the subjectivity at the center. “I obviously spend a lot of time in my own world,” he told Apple Music in 2016. “But when I do take a look at the broader scope of things, I’ve always tried to make music that transcends gender, nationality—to try and unify people. Because that’s really what it’s about.” Even after cementing his prowess many times over, Drake still retains the capacity to surprise. His 2023 poetry collection Titles Ruin Everything with repeat collaborator Kenza Samir proved intentionally fragmented, while his very public 2024 beef with Kendrick Lamar became a focal point not just in hip-hop fandom, but also global mainstream culture. At this point, he’s such an indelible part of the firmament that his slightest move can trigger aftershocks far beyond his immediate reach. - Apple Music

Biography

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he’s had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming. Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010’s My World 2.0, and 2012’s Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex, and Benny Blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease, and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. "I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music

Biography

A sensitive troubadour for the age of social media, Sombr places equal emphasis on sound and soul-baring lyrics. "Caroline," the viral hit that helped the singer/songwriter escalate from indie status to a major label while he was still in his teens, relies on cinematic vistas and rolling harmonies as much as his dramatic vocals. By the time he released the EP In Another Life in 2023, Sombr was collaborating with Tony Berg -- a producer known for his work with Phoebe Bridgers and Michael Penn -- and opening up his music in ways he continued to explore on the 2024 single "In Your Arms." - Apple Music

Biography

Born in 1993, London-based songwriter and producer Frederick John Philip Gibson treats his electro- and rave-inspired songs as diary entries. But the artist, who performs under the name Fred again.., doesn’t limit the subject matter to himself. On albums like 2021’s Actual Life (April 14 - December 17 2020)Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021), Fred invited his friends into the studio to record their personal stories and then sprinkled them throughout the album. The obvious exception was an epic Kodak Black sample on “Kahan (Last Year).” The songwriter has also worked with stars such as Eminem and Ed Sheeran; in 2023, he teamed up with ambient godfather Brian Eno to create the contemplative, uplifting Secret Life, a partnership that Eno called “a two-way relationship.” Fred’s longest collaboration is with his brothers, whom he shares his tracks with before they’re released. “It’s such a blessing to work with both of my brothers,” Fred explained in an interview with Apple Music. “I’ll spend hours and hours working on a tune, and they’ll hear it how I will, but without all the baggage. They bring a fresh ear.” On stage, he’s become closely associated with two beloved brothers from different mothers: Skrillex and Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. Following a surprise booking at Coachella 2023, the three pals became an unlikely superstar DJ trio. Their success just proves a tenet key to Fred’s practice: Music is best among friends. - Apple Music
