Looking at the OCC website, it seems that the lower part of this chart has been corrected (like the one in July 1999):

Original Position - New Position - Artist - Title

40 - 39 - Audio Bullys ft Nancy Sinatra - Shot You Down

39 - 40 - The Cribs - Martell

43 - 41 - Roll Deep - The Avenue

41 - 42 - The Coral - Something Inside Of Me

42 - 43 - Robert Post - Got None

44 - 44 - Axwell - Feel The Vibe (Til The Morning Comes)

45 - 45 - Kubb - Remain

46 - 46 - Kanye West - Diamonds From Sierra Leone

47 - 47 - Texas - Getaway

48 - 48 - Crazy Frog - Axel F

50 - 49 - Inaya Day - Nasty Girl

49 - 50 - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Ain't No Easy Way

51 - 51 - Snoop Dogg - Ups & Downs

52 - 52 - Kaiser Chiefs - Everyday I Love You Less And Less

53 - 53 - Coldplay - Speed Of Sound

55 - 54 - Dancing DJs vs Roxette - Fading Like A Flower

54 - 55 - Tony Christie ft Peter Kay - (Is This The Way To) Amarillo

56 - 56 - Missy Elliott ft Ciara & Fatman Scoop - Lose Control

57 - 57 - Mark Owen - Believe In The Boogie

58 - 58 - Natalie Imbruglia - Counting Down The Days

59 - 59 - Lemar - Don't Give It Up

61 - 60 - The Black Eyed Peas - Don't Phunk With My Heart

60 - 61 - Tyler James - Your Woman

69 - 62 - Faithless - Insomnia

62 - 63 - John Legend - Number One

63 - 64 - The Research - C'Mon Chameleon/I Love You, But…

64 - 65 - Lil' Love - Little Love

65 - 66 - KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World

66 - 67 - Longview - Further

67 - 68 - Supergrass - St Petersburg

68 - 69 - Bobby Valentino - Slow Down

70 - 70 - Razorlight - Somewhere Else

73 - 71 - Deep Dish - Say Hello

71 - 72 - Super Furry Animals - Lazer Beam

72 - 73 - Foo Fighters - Best Of You

75 - 74 - Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl

74 - 75 - Amerie - 1 Thing

Looking at which tracks have gained/lost places, it would appear that the original chart had some download sales missing (the tracks that have lost positions look as though they would have been predominantly physical-sellers). The biggest position change is Insomnia, which is now 7 places higher - this was charting (almost) exclusively on downloads, made chart-eligible by a limited physical re-issue a few months earlier (it received a physical re-issue a couple of weeks later, reaching #17).

Interesting. Has this new version of the chart just recently appeared or might it have been like this since the archive was added a number of years ago? The differences are very subtle so I'm wondering if it's just that when the archive was added it amounted to a rerun of the chart. I'm sure there are a number of other charts where there has been what seems to be a rerun of the chart. There's an old thread here at Buzzjack about some of the changes including one where a record was suddenly elevated into the top 40 when it didn't make it at the time (or maybe it was the other way around and it was demoted from the top 40).

Interesting indeed - fortunately no track appears to have been 'demoted' out of the Top 75 by this apparent re-run. Just a re-configuration of existing positions within the last 36 of that part of the chart. I certainly don't recall any indication that there had been any known errors with the published version, either at the time or since.

It does look like it's just the way that the OCC have exported the chart from their database to the archive. kingofskiffle gave a good explanation at Haven:

That particular chart was missing from the archive when it was first uploaded - that whole week was, with 10 Sep being the first since 30 April for a whole host of charts.

On 18 Mar 2021 I downloaded that week and the download matches the chart as now shown on their website.

23 Dec 1995 is also in error on their website (10 and 9 swapped, and new entry for the same record at 61 for the version LOCDP376 which, when combined, elevates it to 9 overall).

I agree that something would be missing from the lower down sales on 3 Sep, or they just pulled slightly differently. This is not a case of July 1999 but rather that the OCC have updated the rules for export from their database and not put in exactly what was at the time.

My copy of the Virgin Book of Top 40 Charts (which I use for charts up to December 2008 and was published in 2009) does list Audio Bullys at 40 and Cribs at 39, as announced at the time.

Thanks KOS. This chart date - coincidentally (and somewhat preposterously) exactly 20 years ago today - was vaguely familiar to me and I couldn't quite recall why; it must've been the last 'missing' chart in the old OCC archives before they got uploaded (seem to recall an enquiry about missing physical singles charts from those weeks over on UKMix a while ago). Not being a computer-literate sort of chap, I admit to only feebly grasping the concept of "a change of export rules" leading to a slight reconfiguration of positions on a few selected charts in their archive. But does this mean in every case where we know the chart has been affected by this process that these apparently-differently (or more recently) exported versions we now see online are the correct ones, and that any earlier iteration can safely be discarded? Apologies if that should be clear above but maybe I'm missing something.

The correct charts should be the ones compiled at the time but I suppose in theory, the ones in the archive are now the correct ones. Something subtle must have changed which has caused some charts to have titles move up or down by 1 place. Quite what it was, we'll most likely never find out.
