September 30Sep 30 Author 32HolidaysAverage score: 5.7Highest scorer: 07.0 (-Jay-)Lowest scorer: 04.5 (Josh!)31Fake (with Lauv)Average score: 5.8Highest scorer: 07.5 (-Jay-)Lowest scorer: 04.0 (Josh!)Kicking off the results we have two non-album singles (including the only collaboration in Conan's singles discography). In last place is Holidays, Conan's depiction of things moving on and never quite being the same - ever-evolving - when you come back to where you came from, while still a lovely song does stand out as a weak link. While likely never released with the intention of doing big things it's one that could possibly crop up in a few festive-themed playlists and have you sit up and take notice among a sea of camp Christmas bangers. While Conan reflects on the familiarities and comforts that get him through the holiday season, and continues to show off his effortless storytelling style, this is probably a single that fans won't be yearning for to see them through.Four studio albums into his career and with a handful of non-album singles you'd assume Conan might have more collaborations than he does especially considering the company he keeps and the friendships he's made in the business. Although we know for sure he has co-written songs with Olivia Rodrigo, 2020 single Fake, with Lauv, is the only one thus far to be released. I'm listening to it now typing this and feel I scored it too harshly because it is a great song and the music video is a lot of fun. A lot simpler on the songwriting front than we're used to from Conan compared to... pretty much every other single but it's nice (?) to see and hear - with Lauv's assistance - some sass and attitude. Here's hoping, if rumours are to be believed Conan's also co-written with Chappell Roan, we may not be too far off an eventual second collaboration.
September 30Sep 30 The bottom 2 I would have predicted! I actually do really like Holidays (evident by my 7) and look forward to hearing it more in a couple of months. I think Fake is a fun and catchy song - definitely an outlier in Conan's catalogue but it is more Lauv's song of course. Interesting that this is so far Conan's one and only collaboration!

His earlier music tends to be overlooked by most with the focus being firmly on his four studio albums, but there's still a lot to enjoy from where he started to where he ended up being signed by Republic. The Other Side was originally uploaded to Conan's YouTube channel in 2016 before being reworked and released in 2019 after he'd signed to Republic. Much like Holidays, The Other Side tells a beautiful story of where he's come from and how it's moulded him into the person he is, trying to hold on to all of those special little things you hold dear before life truly begins and you brave the world beyond.Fast forward to Conan finishing his senior year of high school and we have Idle Town - the first song from his debut EP Sunset Season - where he pays tribute to his hometown and the memories he's made at high school. Particularly now looking back on songs like this when you consider the subject matter on albums like Superache and Wishbone, there's a beautiful innocence to all of it and while life has happened and there's a lot of maturing in between with a gradual shift from here and then to Kid Krow and beyond, the one constant is just how grounded and emotive Conan's perspective is in his lyrics. Neither are the most commercial sounding, but his early singles are still very much adjacent to what we hear now - six defining years later - in terms of storytelling.
October 5Oct 5 Not surprised that the earlier stuff is dipping out already, but that’s not to say I disliked any of it! Still really strong material considering that they’re his first releases.
October 19Oct 19 Author 28GrowAverage score: 6.6Highest scorer: 07.5 (JosephBoone)Lowest scorer: 05.5 (Josh!)27Comfort CrowdAverage score: 6.7Highest scorer: 07.5 (-Jay-)Lowest scorer: 06.0 (Josh!, Calum)More of Conan's early music bows out with middling average scores; the lower of the two being Grow. In this song, Conan tells the story of leaving his hometown in Texas and heading for California to study at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). And the rest is history because he dropped out to pursue his career in music. There's a certain magic to Conan's beginnings where he really hones in on mastering the beautiful lyrics and creating imagery that sticks with you through them and then steadily growing with each album to where we are now with grand, label-backed production. Grow is no exception and continues the trend of a young optimistic man making his way in the world but never forgetting the beauty of where he came from and what shaped him into the person he is now.Comfort Crowd sees us lose the first of a number of singles from Conan's debut album Kid Krow. Although understated, it's a beautiful song that explores the want and need for friendship and holding close to you those that help you and comfort you in hours of need. Having moved away from home, this - among other songs on Kid Krow - has us embarking on the journey of Conan's yearning for things to be how they used to be back home with friends, or wanting to hold onto those people and things dearest while so much is changing and moving on at the same time. It's something I'm sure we can all relate to on some level while balancing the struggle of trying to find that new 'comfort crowd'; and it's a theme that flickers away and re-appears throughout Conan's discography.

In sticking with the view through his reflective and sometimes sombre lens, Generation Why explores some deep feelings of hopelessness and possibly even anxiety or fear about Conan's generation regarding real world issues and and the pressures that the world itself puts upon them; further extending the ties that bind this EP with senior year experiences and thoughts about the world you're living in and your future. I think, for me and despite not being my favourite from the EP, this would be one of my top picks from Sunset Season to hear live in a slower-paced, dreamy and reflective section.Fast forward five months and we have The King, released in March 2019. Conan's fanbase are no strangers to speculating about the subjects of his music with many well-known names being thrown out there. Perhaps more surprisingly among those names though is that Manu Rios - of Netflix's Elite - is believed by many to be the subject of this song; one that Conan has described being about somebody that waited four years to tell him that they liked him back. The King is a really beautiful song, and when you can detach yourself from some really crazy theories about x song being about y person and just absorb it and take something meaningful from the lyrics it will always be exactly that.
Tuesday at 14:394 days Author 24Crush CultureAverage score: 7.1Highest scorer: 08.0 (JosephBoone)Lowest scorer: 06.5 (-Jay-)23The StoryAverage score: 7.2Highest scorer: 08.0 (HarryGarfield, -Jay-, JosephBoone)Lowest scorer: 05.5 (Josh!)Crush Culture finishes as the highest-rated single from Conan's debut EP Sunset Season at #24, however it's a shame that in the first nine singles to be revealed we've lost all of the singles from that era; an era that defined a lot of Conan's artistry and that shaped him into who he is now. Alas, a song that evolved from seeing his friends so 'in love' with one another and not having experienced that for himself came to be. Conan describes it somewhat as coming from a place of bitterness, but is that being too hard on oneself? Yearning for that too, wishing it was you and waiting for the right person to come along and make all of that happen... patience, young Conan. You have no idea what's to come.Going back to Kid Krow and we have The Story. Now a song suggested to be tied in some way lyrically and thematically to This Song from his fourth album Wishbone (the story of 'the boy and the boy'), Conan (brace yourself) tells the story of what life was like pre-fame; things that have happened in his life, the effects, and the relationships around him. The Story feels like a love letter or care package to a younger self, looking back and assuring yourself that everything's going to be okay no matter how messed up, scary and world-ending things might seem at the time. All of the lived experiences and the stories that belong to you live on through our nearest and dearest. And this only further solidifies the power of Conan's storytelling.

The first of those is Astronomy from Conan's sophomore album Superache. Released in May 2021, Astronomy is a beautiful, understated single that tells the story of drifting apart from somebody that you loved because at some point you realised that you're 'two worlds apart' and they're not the person they once were. If you've ever been in love (and fallen out of love!) this is surely one song you can relate to; having nothing in common with someone you adored so much, taking on the heartbreak of letting them go and accepting that things aren't going to be the same again and being the strangers you've become is how things are best left. From one track 5 to another, Checkmate - from debut album Kid Krow - sees Conan switch things up a little with, until this point, his most commercial-sounding, traditional pop song. Is there any lore on which aspiring Netflix actor this song could be about? Who knows, but here Conan uses the metaphor of chess to signal that he is nobody's pawn and that he is in fact the king (a fitting callback). It's clear the song held a lot of weight at the time as Conan's said that he cried out the song in the space of five minutes in his bedroom, and said it was dedicated to an asshole that was always playing games with his heart. Conan's poor heart has been through so much, and this is only the beginning of it all with Kid Krow.
Wednesday at 00:003 days No major losses out still, though Checkmate does feel like the blueprint for Olivia Rodrigo's good 4 u! (both Dan Nigro tracks which explains it)Astronomy is a lovely song but probably the Superache single I revisit the least.
Wednesday at 20:422 days There's 14 songs that I gave a score of 8 or less, and 12 of those have been revealed so far - so there's nothing out yet that I'm too dismayed about not making the Top 20 of the results. Astronomy is my favourite of what's been revealed so far!
Thursday at 01:482 days Author 20JigsawAverage score: 8.2Highest scorer: 09.0 (HarryGarfield, JosephBoone)Lowest scorer: 07.0 (Josh!)19YoursAverage score: 8.2Highest scorer: 11.0 (Calum)Lowest scorer: 06.0 (Josh!)A double whammy of Superache singles now as we enter the top 20, the first being Jigsaw. You'll notice that we only have the lyric video for Jigsaw and that's because - for reasons unknown - the music video for this was supposedly filmed but never released and ended up being cancelled. A strange decision because what a single this is. Born from a diary entry about changing parts of yourself so much that you no longer recognise who you are in the mirror all to finally be loved by someone, this really is quite a heartbreaking song despite the punchy chorus that gives more of the pop-leaning Conan. One quote from an interview Conan took part in that I find really inspiring is: "Destroying yourself to win somebody's love will only leave you empty on the other side. Because in the end, that person won't love you, just the version of you that you made for them. Instead choose to become somebody that you love." Say it louder! From one single with quite a heartbreaking message to another, we have my personal favourite single (and possibly song from his discography, period) of Conan's, Yours. And following up on the music video trivia earlier, I either haven't seen the music video for Yours in quite some time and had forgotten or haven't ever seen it, but phew he looks so beautiful and ethereal. For me, Yours is Conan truly at his most vulnerable in his songwriting. The lyrics are so raw and so honest, tackling feelings about another person that you might not want to admit but are sometimes the blunt truth staring right back at you. I can relate to this song a lot, and the way it builds throughout is stunning; probably Conan's biggest - challenged only by Alley Rose? - vocal delivery to date and one for the heartbreak and trauma playlists to cry your heart out to.

I think anybody that's been in a revolving door kind of situationship with someone can probably relate to this song on some level. Conan talks about trying to get over somebody that's played you and messed you up leaving scars and open wounds all over before just dropping you walking back into your life time and time again. Just as you think you're about to get over the person, here they come again and you're in a loop. Trapped and under their spell. Having not initially had its moment when Kid Krow was released, it's good that through TikTok these 'moments' can be created and we see a resurgence and retrospective appreciation, even if it's a shame not to see it at the time. Which leads nicely onto...The first single from Found Heaven dropping out of the race. When I talk about retrospective appreciation, I get the feeling this is something a lot of people will start to feel for the Found Heaven era years down the line because at present it feels it's the one era that's looked at like a black mark by Conan's fanbase. However, Lonely Dancers is an incredible song (on an album full of incredible songs that pinpoints such a welcome change in direction and style for Conan). What Found Heaven does so well is - while still having his trademark heartbreak style intertwined throughout - is fully embrace the more joyful, up-tempo vibes and encapsulating a foregone era of music. Lonely Dancers does just that, and while the subject matter still tackles Conan being ghosted in the early stages of dating, he brings it to life in the most brilliant way.
