Does anyone here ever listen to Laura Nyro? She was wonderful.

(18 October 1947 - 8 April 1997)

She had a very moody aesthetic haha, but not all of her music actually matches that!

I had a vague idea of her for a while, but this year I've been going through all her albums and been really loving it. She had a really lovely, expressive and distinctive voice, and her arrangements / instrumentals sometimes remind me of Joni Mitchell or to a lesser extent Kate Bush.

Her best-known albums are Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), but I've also been enjoying her lesser-known ones like for example Nested (1978), which in particular I find a very warm and soothing listen. Just what I need sometimes. ❤️

I won't link any songs right now as not sure which ones to put! Lol

I entered one of her songs into the Buzzjack Song Contest - Save The Country is even more relevant in 2025 than it was in the late 60's.

Nice to see a fan! 😊

I've only been introducing myself to her this year like I said, but I wouldn't necessarily have described her as gospel soul, bar maybe a few songs. There's definitely more to her sound in case anyone's curious - I don't think this forum is exactly full of gospel soul fans haha.

I could actually even see her as having quite a lot in common with Tori Amos! Who I believe has spoken highly of her if I remember correctly.

I didnt know Tori Amos rated her, thats nice to hear. I can see the influence on her slower tracks. I got into her via covers of her songs in the early 70's from Fifth Dimension and Barbra Streisand (but I didnt know it was her until the 80's!), and she was always thought of highly in the music industry and by musicians (she did an entire album with Patti Labelle) but never really got well-known in her own right with the wider public, which was a shame.

This is the type of music I grew up with so I have a fondness for her too. I can't say that I know what her different tracks are without looking them up but I do remember thinking she had talent when my father used to play her.
