R-72880-1295591049.jpg

Off-Shore were a German Dance project lead by Jens Lissat, who was one of the key dance producers in germany at that time and also formed the well-known dance project "Interactive", who had hits with "Who Is Elvis", "Dildo" and "Forever Young". "I Can't take The Power" is a nice little euro-piano-house banger, which reached #7 in early 1991.

81 Oleta Adams - Get Here

grafik.png

Oleta Adams grew up in Yakima and spent her formal years in the church singing in the choir as well as playing the piano and directing prior to her teenage years. After rejecting a scholarship to study opera at a Lutheran university, she decided to shoot her shot into the music industry, however, she was turned down by music executive's who favored disco music at the time. Undeterred, she moved to Kansas City and after a stint of hotel residency, she would be discovered by Tears For Fears who recruited her for their 1989 album, Tears For Fears - The Seeds Of Love. The single, Tears For Fears - Woman In Chains features Adams on vocal duties and became a Top 40 Hit across ten territories including the U.K. and America. (Discogs)

"Get here" was her only big hit and one of the best soul songs of the 1990's for me.

80 Soho - Hippychick

grafik.png

"Hippiechick" is a great downtempo house track released by the british group Soho. It was a one hit wonder peaking at #8 in early 1991. The incoming of the song was inspired by The Smiths song "How Soon Is Now". For me this is a timeless classic.

grafik.png

Robert Palmer (1949–2003) was an English singer, songwriter, and musician known for his smooth voice, sharp style, and ability to move effortlessly between rock, pop, soul, funk, and reggae. He began his career in the late 1960s with the band Vinegar Joe before launching a successful solo career in the 1970s and beyond. "Mercy Mercy Me" is a brilliant chilled pop song - one of his best songs for me. It reached #9 in early 1991.

76 Ralph Tresvant - Sensitivity

grafik.png

Ralph Tresvant (born May 16, 1968) is an American singer, songwriter, and producer, best known as the lead vocalist of the influential R&B group New Edition. Raised in Boston, Tresvant’s smooth, high tenor voice became a defining element of the group’s sound, helping drive hits such as “Candy Girl,” “Cool It Now,” and “Mr. Telephone Man.”

In 1990, he launched a successful solo career with his self-titled debut album, featuring the Grammy-winning hit “Sensitivity.” For me "Sensitivity" is a brilliant masterpiece of early 90s R&B much better than anything he did with New Edition. It reached # 18 in early 1991.

One of my favourite groups of all time - the Bee Gees have such a great catalogue spanned over 4 decades. They always delivered catchy songs and "Secret Love" is no exception from it. "Secret Love" peaked at #5 in spring 1991.

72 Rebel MC Feat. Tenor Fly & Barrington Levy - Tribal Base

grafik.png

The 80's popster turned proto-jungle revolutionary Rebel MC was born Michael West 27 August 1964 in Islington, London. He was part of the Beatfreak sound system. He joined Double Trouble in the early '80s with Michael Menson and Leigh Guest and released the ska-pop hit Street Tuff. Rebel MC gained fame in England as a Pop-rapper, but by 1991 had released Rebel MC - Black Meaning Good, an album that presaged Jungle with hardcore techno married to dub basslines and ragga toasters such as Barrington Levy and P.P. Arnold. "Tribal Base" was the was the commercially succesful tune from that album peaking at #20 in summer 1991. I still believe that "The Wickedest Sound" was the most influential tune on that album but that peaked just outside the top 40. Rebel MC later renamed himself to Congo Natty, under which he released further great Ragga/Jungle-albums in the 21st century. My favourite is the "Jungle Revolution" album from 2013 with the massive tune "London Dungeons".

71 Extreme - More Than Words

grafik.png

Extreme is an American rock band, headed by frontmen Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt, that reached the height of their popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Among some of Extreme's musical influences are Van Halen, Queen, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. The band played at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 and Cherone joined Van Halen in 1996. The band has described their music as "funky metal" in the early days, but it would evolve much more in the mid-1990s by blending classic rock influences with post-grunge and alternative rock.

"More Than Words" was by far their biggest hit reaching #2 in summer 1991. Eventhough it is a bit cheesy, I always loved this song. Softrock at its best.

69 R.E.M - Losing My Religion

grafik.png

This has to be my favourite R.E.M. song - it is absolute pop-rock perfection. So catchy. However, this peaked only at #19 in spring 1991. This was way to low - it deserved to be a top 3 hit.
