It's JENNIE who is the BLACKPINK member with two entries in my top 40 with the first being her Dua Lipa collab 'Handlebars' at #39. Despite not releasing any other new music aside from this feature, Dua Lipa had a great 2025 with her World Tour being a huge success and I took a trip to Anfield (boo) to see it. I wasn't sold on this at the start (see that #18 debut) but I changed my mind very quickly and with the Dua and, later a BLACKPINK, tour boost, it's held well in my affections. Dua Lipa does steal the song in fairness, It sounds more like a Dua song featuring JENNIE rather than the other way around but that's fine because she's such a star. I'm liking this R&B-tinged pop sound for Dua. I wouldn't mind hearing more like this on her next album.

This is really the section of growers and this is another track that I thought was alright on first listen but bloomed into being a fave. Debuting at #10 before camping at #4 for three weeks, 'Mad' helped consolidate Reneé as an artist I'm really excited about and helped ensure the album was put in heavy rotation. I particularly enjoy the delayed gratification of the songwritting where you know what she's suggesting with the long pause in the chorus but you think it's going to be one of those songs where they play coy and leave the meaning implicit before she finally drops the 'head' line in the outro. It is a slight cheesy but it matches her messy public persona. I can't wait to scream along to the chorus to this one on tour.

In what will now basically come a tradition, today's daily Alessi post is for 'Everything Anything' which officially puts us halfway through her 12 entries. One thing I think's really impressive with Alessi is, for somebody so early into her career, she's already found her own distinct voice and I feel like I would have been able to identify this as an Alessi-penned song just from the lyrics and melodies had someone else recorded it. She already feels to me like she's an established, accomplished musician at the peak of her powers.

Another track off my favourite album of 2025, 'Never Getting Laid' is another example of Sabrina's mastering of her craft with more witty lyrics and memorable hooks. I do want to shout-out the production for John Ryan here too. Sometimes the art of contrasts can be an amazing thing in music and smooth production and sweet vocals from Sabrina work wonders in making the unserious, cynical lyrics really land. I usually try to pick a lyric that I feel sums up the message of track to quote above (not necessarily my favourite lyric) and I'm spoilt for choice here. So many great lines with the 'agoraphobia' line probably being the most eye-catching but it's the sarcastic second chorus that wins out for me. I was quite taken-aback with the slowed-down, stripped-back outro on first listen but I've grown to love it and find it essential in selling the absurdity.

JADE's EOY History:

2025 35 Plastic Box

The first of two JADE tracks to appear, 'Plastic Box' was criminally underrated in the UK chart, missing the top 40 by four positions. At least its been lauded critically with inclusions in NME, Pitchfork and the Guardian's 'songs of the year lists' as well as a slightly more-offbeat approval by winning the Popjustice £20 Music Prize. After a few OTT, maximalist singles ('IT girl', 'FUFN') where JADE throws everything at the wall, this was a much more subdued sound from her but it still hits just as hard. This provides her a great opportunity to show off the lovely tone she has in her vocals, especially in the deeper moments, and it combines so brilliantly with the production to make this something special. It was definitely one of the best moments in her tour show too!

Today's Alessi track is a non-single from her first EP Of 2025, 'IKYK'. Just like the song it succeeds, one thing I adore in this track is the staccato thumps in the chorus that give the song such a great energy. There so many melodies in here that I find so catchy, the aforementioned chorus, the elongated final syllables on the verses, the fast-paced post-chorus! You may know that my Taylor album of choice is 'reputation' so I certainly don't mind a bit of vocoder-vocals and we get a splattering of some here just to add a bit of flavour. This is a song from her burgeoning career that I already feel is hugely underrated.

Still waiting for that all important #1 hit in my chart, Leah Kate's second #2 peaking track rewards her with her highest placement in my EOY charts with 'Just Because' bowing out at #33. As long as you can get past the slight-cringiness factor that's always there in her lyrics, you're treated with a retro-sounding, synthy bop. After being teased in the last track, we go full vocoder here. The verses are actually quite forgettable and what really makes this song sing is the clean vocals on the pre-chorus and the fun release of the chorus. Although this year has proved that I'm a sucker for a good bridge when its done well, I actually enjoy that this one ends with synth break and not a traditional bridge/third verse/final chorus. I'm a bit disappointed this ended up as a one-off single, as it would have fit perfectly on the 'Genius' album we eventually got.

Best Part: The synthy chorus with vocoder vocals

Marking a solid debut year in my charts with an EOY top 40 hit, Kylie Cantrall's 'Denim' continues, and perhaps masters, the pop-R&B sound from her first two singles. This was produced by Jonas Jeberg who also worked on other songs I love like Selena Gomez's 'Fetish', JENNIE's 'start a war' and Fifth Harmony's 'Sledgehammer'. Although he does also have a credit on 'High Hopes' by 'Panic! at the Disco' but everyone has an off-day. For what you expect Disney-star songs to sound like, this is pretty great and I really feel like she has great potential once she moves away from the Disney films. 'Goodie Bag' (quite literally) kicks-off where this one ends if you listen to the EP with them transitioning perfectly into each other in one of my favourite production choices of the year. Although, unlike with the previous song, I feel like this one was crying out for another verse. 2:27 just isn't enough!

Best Part: The R&B influences

This is a great example about how stats can lie. It's chart run and last.fm scrobbles suggest that it should be ranking at least 10 places lower. However, I'm worrying that even this is too low for where it really deserves. I'm slowly being converted by country music and this feels like another big milestone in my country journey. Only Kacey Musgraves has landed a higher song from the genre in my EOY chart ('breadwinner, #19, 2021) and I wonder how long that record will last. One thing that really won me over with this song is the music video. Megan is on directing duties herself and I think this is a brilliant choice as it allows her to make this a real showcase of her personality and ensure the video and song are perfectly in step. I know by proxy of it being the most recent track to appear should mean that it's obviously my favourite song so far but I want to emphasise that this is REALLY my favourite song so far by a considerable amount. I think this is one of those tracks where I will look back at in a few years time and question how it was never a #1 hit in my chart. Megan has a new single out tomorrow and I am hyped!

Best Part: The way her personality shines throughout the video

Hi Lewis hi

My favourites to drop out since I last commented are: 'The Fate of Ophelia', 'Sports car', 'What Was That', 'past life', 'warm' + 'Plastic Box' wub

I'm pleased to hear that the Virgin era compelled you to go and see Lorde live! I saw her a few years ago and agree that 'Green Light' really hits in that setting.

Sabrina's sixth entry of the year is another album track from the standout run of songs that make up the middle part of Sabrina's 'Man's Best Friend' album. 'Go Go Juice'. There's plenty hear that make it fun. The thinly-veiled references to her ex-boyfriends (John, Larry, Gosh, Villain) and the conversational adlibs are great but it's the bridge where she imitates a drunken, attempted booty-call that stands-out the most. Sabrina really excels at elevating a track with her delivery and the performance choices she makes and the irregular grammar ('Should we hooks up?', 'Do you me still love?'), the slurs and the mumbles and the ever-increasing pace is just so fun. I was glad Taylor moved on from Jack Antonoff as the sound was starting to get a bit stale but I'm enjoying his diversion with Sabrina.

Best Part: The standout bridge

After the Kendrick-Drake beef felt like it revitalised the genre of Hip-Hop in 2024, last year felt like an awful year for the genre with this being one of only two Rap songs in my top EOY top 40. This album was a huge saving grace with it's great MCing and jazzy-production feeling like a return the the classic 90s sound. I don't know much about MFnMelo but his verse is brilliant and he fits on the track perfectly. The horn-y production of the start is joyous and the beat-witch is crazy and just as fun. Saba needs a mention too! Just like Sabrina, he adds so much personality in his delivery which is really what separates him (and JID) from his peers. And when the outro it catchier than most other rapper's choruses, you know it's something special. Saba is my first concert of 2026 next month and to hear some tracks from this album and his other 5-star masterpiece, 2018's 'CARE FOR ME'.

Best Part: The beat-switch that justifies is existence with two immaculate beats

If feels like it was ages ago when the first #1 hit, Sabrina Carpenter's 'Busy Woman' dropped out at #57. We finally get our second and it's Sabrina again with 'Tears' landing at #28. No spoilers but her other #1 hit of the year will be much higher. Another enjoyable music video moment from her with Colman Domingo making an appearance in the 'Rocky Horror Show' inspired visuals. With four different endings, each getting their own spell to shine on YouTube, it feels quite reminiscent of 1985's 'Clue'. A disco-inspired track, it features the witty, innuendo-laced lyrics you expect from her but with added Shikitahs.

Best Part: Dance break!

It was amazing to see 'bittersweet' finally giving Madison a belated first (hopefully of many) appearance in the Billboard Hot 100 as well as her 6th appearance in the UK chart. The word I'd use to describe this is 'dreamy', Madison can really sing (a statement I can attest to having seen her live three times) but what she's amazing at is getting so much emotion across in her vocals without relying on hitting loads of high-notes. They feel otherworldly to me, both vulnerably but impossibly clean. It's a great time to discuss this as I can now reference it in the context of the album, which I'm loving so far. On release, I initially thought this was an underwhelming single choice, and now having heard that there's other potential choices I would have made on the album, but it won me over quite quickly, climbing to #2 on its fourth week of release. Although, you may see pretty soon that there was another song called 'Bittersweet' that peaked at #2 in my chart last year that I do slightly prefer.

Best Part: Madison getting her first taste of the Billboard Hot 100

Well today really has been the day of Sabrina with her taking up 3 out of the 5 spots. 'Nobody's Son' is my pick of the album tracks and is the one currently taking up in a space in her three songs in the Official UK Chart. The catchiest hook on the album is followed by a striking instrumental post-chorus. I'm afraid I'm going to have to give Jack Antonoff his props again but massive shoutout to John Ryan again too. There's a great, almost nursery rhyme-like feeling to the melody which makes it feel instantly familiar but fresh. However, my favourite choice in the production is the whip sound effect at the end of each stanza in the bridge that just make it sound all the more dramatic and theatrical. I just love pretty much every choice made in this album, I think you can hear the fun that they had creating it throughout each track.

Best Part: The drama of the bridge

Kicking off the top quarter of the chart is ROSÉ with her single for the F1 soundtrack, 'Messy'. On its release in May, it made it an impressive feat for BLACKPINK with it ensuring that all four members had a solo #1 hit in my chart last year. She is the first of them to drop out of this chart completely but 2024 was more her year anyway where she released her album and saw big success with 'APT.' and 'toxic till the end'. 'Messy' is a rare-ballad from the F1 movie and the change-of-pace helped it become my favourite song for its soundtrack. Produced by BURNS and LOSTBOY, there's a nice piano riff that gives the song a lot of life and stops it from being just another ballad. ROSÉ delivers on the vocals too making this feel like such a mature addition to her discography.

Best Part: The piano riff

I promised you another 2025 #2 hit called 'Bittersweet' and here we are. It's tough competition but I think this may be my favourite chorus of Alessi's. It has been camped in my head since release day with no signs of it leaving any time soon. Being the penultimate track on the (standard) EP, this is always the song that I'm looking forward to reach and it leaves you on a high. This is crazily underrated too, only 7.4k YouTube views is criminal! Easily one of my highlights for the live show, her vocals are really punchy here which makes it feel rawer. There are four Alessi tracks left and they are her four #1 hits.

Best Part: The delivery of the 'freak' line in the chorus

2025 35 Plastic Box

My first new #1 hit of 2025, 'IT girl' kickstarted a great year for JADE that saw her win a BRIT, release her debut album and embark on a sold-out tour. This is my favourite release of her solo-career so far. It's so bold and brash which juxtaposes so perfectly with the slower pre-chorus that showcase her heavenly, ethereal vocal range. This song is where the title of the album comes from (and was initially meant to be the title of the song) and its fitting because this is the summarisation of all the key themes and sounds from the album mixed into one epic track. Ever since the bow-tie days on the X Factor, JADE has always been my favourite from Little Mix and this is great validation of that belief.

Best Part: The visualiser that's better than most official music videos
